I recently got introduced to Gierok farm. I love your KZbin. I am a 78 year old “farmboy” that grew up in Southern Minnesota. I started driving tractor at 7 years old. A farmal B. My dad died when I was 12. By the time I was 15 I was farming the 120. I’ve lived in Oregon now for 55+ years and worked at many different jobs. Mainly construction. But my love for farming is always with me. Seeing you and your dad work together makes me often think of how it might have been if my dad had lived. Anyway, I could go on and on… but thanks for your videos. Happy Holidays!

One nice thing about those ridge fields is the result of a century or more of field work causes the edge of the field to become a definite edge (followed by a sudden drop off into the woods!) I was always afraid of those edges when I used to help my uncle make hay up on Montana Ridge.

We notill beans into cornstalks with 12 row kinze, use a landoll vt on bean stuble in fall with field cultivator in the spring and plant. Your 7120 ought to be a real horse with duals and extra weights. Doesn't seem to lack for power. Gets to be a challenge to get any late afternoon work done this time of year with the days getting shorter. Deer gun season is on this week in Ohio, so we try to stay around the buildings as much as possible.

Tillage is a tool in the box. Not inexpensive, but necessary in different conditions. I'm in favor of getting the land "right" with tillage once, and using NoTil until conditions such as ruts or compaction become a problem. Fuel savings offset most yield reduction in the first few years, then yields trend upward as the soil finds it's balance point of more organic matter and even more earthworms.
@case102024 күн бұрын
Spot on! I'm the same way. I've been a no-tiller for a long time.
@TheGoodguy6824 күн бұрын
Please explain, using chemicals is better than using fuel?
@MorganOtt-ne1qj24 күн бұрын
@TheGoodguy68 Yes, that is part of the equation. Even with tillage, you are going to use chemicals. Many of the same ones, especially the Pre Emergents. Only difference is in the "burn down" chemicals. Then you factor in the time, not to mention the fuel burned for tillage, and the economics favor NoTil. Then we can study soil structure. Undisturbed soil is actually a better biome for earthworms, and the organic matter that is left on top can slowly turn into a bit of mulch that helps retain water and slow erosion. If you want to go further, tillage releases Carbon into the atmosphere, whereas NoTil sequesters Carbon in the soil. It does take a few years for yields to match tillage, but it does happen. And $ per acre is what can make or break a farm.
@TheGoodguy6824 күн бұрын
@MorganOtt-ne1qj sounds great but tillage built America.
@Otherrandomguy4224 күн бұрын
@@TheGoodguy68 you don't use more chemicals to no till some farms are using less because diseases/ fungus's tend to be less prevalent in undisturbed soil

Reason it plugs by tire is the shovel throws the dirt right towards the tire so it is going to limiting the space there. Flip the shovel to throw away from tire.

@patrickkelley43824 күн бұрын
On hilly ground a multi-faceted tilling regime works well. Some areas need full till and some areas need low till or no till. To me it depends a lot on the crop going in next year. If it's corn this far north you need black dirt so it will warn up quicker. For beans I chop stalks and no till.
@LarryVetter24 күн бұрын
The caseIH really starts nice. You will be amazed by how much those front wheels do. If it was two wheel drive, you wouldn't have gone anywhere.. Here in Iowa, we use a disk ripper on the corn stalks after they are cut. Spring we use a field cultivator to prepare the ground for planting.

With your hills the chance of erosion is high. Leaving lots of stover on top is important but the right tillage is so helpful also. Balancing act that you'll have to learn.

When you get new Tires in the rear, fill them with calcium. Hard on the rims but you can't beat it for weight. Dulls and a full stack of weights up front and it'll pull a 11 shank on those hills easily. Guys do exactly that here on the hills with the heavy clay here in eastern Iowa all the time with the same tractor. 👍
