That’s what my sons teachers said. One even kept thanking me because she said due to the grades she teaches she doesn’t get teacher gifts. I was shocked and she said she is envious of the elementary school teachers cuz they get all the appreciation gifts and I told her they would be getting end of year ones as well she got all excited. Middle school teachers and HS teachers need love to.

@@meaganodell4479 that’s so true I teach middle and high, and I only get a couple of gifts each year (which is totally fine). We don’t expect parents to buy gifts for 8 teachers. It’s also totally fine to just get 1 or 2 gifts for your kids’ favorite teachers. Whatever our students choose is always appreciated, and when we do get a gift it is extra special.

Not so for me. I tried liking them, but I just can't seem to find them cute, especially since I'm a minimalist who does not drink coffee or tea. I kindly asked students and staff not to get me them, I'd prefer just a simple 'thank you' instead, but they still ignored my request.

My aunt was a teacher and after she passed away we found a letter from one of her students that she saved about what a difference she made. It was so heartwarming and inspiring that I printed it and framed it to remind me of what kind of person she was and the kind of person I want to strive to be. My point is that this was gift that meant a lot to her and was even a gift for her daughter and I after she passed away.

I always feel embarrassed at getting gifts from my class. Especially as there are usually a few children who’s parents don’t bother or can’t afford to give to us and those children always look really embarrassed. And they shouldn’t! Christmas is a time to be kind, not to give presents for the sake of receiving them. I make a point of not opening in front of children due to these children but always write a thank-you note. I totally agree with the first few points! A heartfelt letter is amazing, and a class collection to a voucher is way better than 20 sets of miniature shower gel. To be clear: we never expect presents. However it seems that it is expected of us to get the children presents now. Trying to find gifts for 30 children under £1 each is so difficult and sometimes the recipients aren’t that grateful. I’m on MAT leave at the moment, but next year I’m going to install a kindness advent and encourage this rather than gift giving. Love your blogs, Emily! They have really helped me navigate life with a newborn! X

Jodie, i completely see where you are coming from. When you mentioned teachers giving gifts to the children, myself as a mother of 3 never would expect a teacher to give my children a gift. This has happened in the past and I honestly think that it should not be expected, i am ashamed by some who think it should. A gesture, perhaps (holiday hugs, mean so much more to a child)...a gift? Totally unnecessary.

My mom was a teacher for 30 years. She has well over two dozen Christmas mugs and another two dozen “best teacher” Christmas ornaments. And honestly most of them don’t get used. When she started teaching she got more gifts but the last years she taught her school system put a cap on teacher gifts to a value of $5 per child. But even a homemade and a $5 Starbucks gift card lets a teacher know you care and lets them have a little treat. And as for American teachers needing school supplies: my mom got $60 a year to supply her classroom. While kids brought supplies from home some kids didn’t have many resources. And by Christmas all the glue sticks are dried up and all the crayons are broken. If you want to donate supplies to the classroom ask what the teacher needs. It may be a new electric pencil sharpener or packs of pencils or packs of lined paper. But there will be something.

I am in no way at all saying we all need gifts too, absolutely not, it’s just nice when us other school staff members are noticed too. There are many children in my school who tell me I am their favourite person at school, which melts my heart! Being trusted by small humans to listen to them, sort their problems, turn their tears into laughter, mend friendships, look after their grazed knees and cut hands or simply playing tag with them is such an amazing feeling!

-_-...She made it clear they don't expect presents, that the thing they loved most was a heartfelt note. I think that is the least you can do. They take care of your kid all year and do way more than they are paid for.

socks are one of those things that will always get used, I always appreciate them! Even if they're a weird style or whatever, you can wear them at home/have shoes on when you go out

Brilliant video Emily! I’ve never gave “best teacher” gifts because of the reason you said it would just clutter up there house & would probably not use it, I’m going to stick to wine & a gift voucher 😃 xx

Here's an unusual one for you. I live in northern Canada(like WAY NORTH)and am married to a teacher and have worked in schools myself for years. It's not uncommon here for a young teen student to gift some of his first animal hunt to people in his life he admires...ie. his teacher. So my husband has received both moose and caribou roasts-freshly harvested off the land. Highly appreciated where we live.

Teacher here too! Absolutely yes to vouchers. In the whole time I have been teaching I have never received a voucher.I always get so much chocolate that it saves me from having to buy any over Christmas so that is a plus.

The US has some very strict ideas about teachers social lives. I've known teachers who have been disciplined for being seen at a local restaurant having margaritas after work, not acting foolish, not drunk, just seen with a drink. We would possible get in trouble for accepting alcohol as a gift, also it would get the parent in trouble to bring it on school grounds. I was taken into my principals office with one of his assistants my first year because some students had gotten a picture of myself and my boyfriend(now husband) off Facebook simply standing together at my cousin's wedding...the students made inappropriate comments about the two of us and I recieved a warning about my social life becoming a distraction. We don't drink. We don't party. We literally were standing in formal attire that was not revealing and smiling at the camera.

In the US, the students/parents are responsible for the school supplies, not the teachers. I'm a mother of 5 children. My oldest is 21 years old and my youngest is 2 years old.
