a suggestion: you should include cpu temps instead of usage, and its frequency as well, especially while reviewing a laptop imo

@@RandomGaminginHD Don't know why the CPU would be a problem but what I noticed with the G5 is that MSI Afterburner sometimes gets very confused because of the iGPU... At some point it didn't work at all because Afterburner thought there was no dGPU. 😀

Yes, you're right - always show CPU and GPU temps when benchmarking laptops because the temperatures can be more of a limiting factor than the performance of the CPU/GPU. I have a HP OMEN 15-dc0003na with i7-8750H and GTX1050Ti, and the CPU/GPU cooling system is completely inadequate. The temperatures routinely get high (especially on the CPU side) and thermal throttling can occur (especially if the fan settings are not on Comfort mode).

Ahh yes, the 940m. I had an Acer Aspire back in 2016 with an i5-5200U + the 940m. It did okay, with my expectations in check. Not particularly stellar for anything around the time of it's release and beyond, but for older PS3/360 era PC ports like Dead Space 1-3, Borderlands 2, and Fallout 3 & NV, it held up well enough. I used to be happy just being able to play those titles at all, since at the time the laptop was my only PC and I didn't have a console. I'm curious to see if NIS is compatible with it, and how much it would help out when using an external monitor. Unfortunately I no longer have said device, and moved on to a more capable (at the time) Dell Inspiron 7567; although even it is now beginning to struggle with newer games at 1080p. Specifically due to the CPU, 4 non-HT cores with a max clock speed of 3.1ghz all core just doesn't fare as well as it once did. It's the only computer I own where I see 100% CPU utilization more often than not lol

0:25 Oh, I'm already feeling happy about this machine! A second M.2 SSD slot as well as a 2.5in SSD/HDD slot, now that's nice to have and something you don't often see! Plus, the RAM is already in dual channel, which is nice, though you can upgrade the RAM to 32GB if you so desire to. I also like the customizable fan speeds - something that more manufacturers need to take note of.

I got this thing for a great price and I‘m so happy with my decision. I came from my Surface Pro 4 with a flickering screen that I used for uni. I looked at a lot of laptops but I wanted something that could give me some power when I‘m not at home and since I upgraded my desktop to something that I just wouldn’t dare to take with me anymore, this fit the task perfectly. I just chuck it into my bag along with my mouse and the charger and I‘m set for any LAN party shenanigans! Love the storage upgradability and the customizable fan curves.

@@Walamonga1313 Ten years ago, I would have said the same. As soon as I made my own money and got into uni I had a lot more freedom to choose what I spend money on. 😀 The laptop really serves me well and it has more of a purpose than being fodder. Whenever I want to game in the living room, I don't have latency issues with the laptop plugged into the TV anymore. If you have the money and you can justify spending that much for your own conscience, noone's stopping you. I know there are a lot of people who can't afford hardware like this and I consider myself very lucky to be able to do so. That's why I always give away used parts to friends & family instead of selling to strangers in order to get a small kickback.

Currently watching this on one, had this for months now with the similar specs. I love the fact that the overall aesthetics of the laptop doesn't scream "gaming", which is perfect & pleasing for me (I've only used the LED keyboard lights inside a dark room). I can attest that the performance of the laptop, especially with the 6GB RTX 3060 is sufficient to both play games and run demanding programs, i.e. Solidworks and Da Vinci. (yeah, the vram isn't as much as the desktop variant, similarly as its performance, but I'm happy it still packs some serious horsepower) It didn't come with a lot of bloatware, which is surprising. There is however, some issues I've faced; similar to you, the fans really love to scream a lot. Other than that, mine frequently crashed beforehand due to overheating. Similar to one of the commenters here, undervolting the CPU seems to remedy this issue. (if moving out of a country with a hot climate is not an option) I'd say that it's a great value overall; I've considered it as my personal 'portable desktop', since it quintessentially has a similar spec to my current desktop at home with a Ryzen 5 2600 and GTX 1070 (lol). (Sorry for the long read, I certainly didn't expect you to review this laptop of mine, even similar down to the specific variant of it. As always, looking forward for your future ventures :)

Thanks so much for making this video. I’ve really wanted a gaming laptop and saw this on Newegg for sale and impulsively bought it. Moments after the feelings of regret started setting in when I started looking at other models and brands. Knowing that your biggest issue is the battery (it will be plugged in on a desk almost 100% of the time), and the fans (I game on old PlayStation that sounds like a literal jet, and an older Alienware laptop so I am almost positive it will not bother me), I am now really really happy with this purchase. Including the footage of in game testing in various different games was such an amazing touch and something you don’t typically see in reviews. Thank you so much!!

I understand the lasting impression thing. When Skyrim came out in 2011 I was on a laptop below the minimum spec. I remember stuff not loading in sometimes, giving me missing walls or missing rivers. I remember the performance in Riften was especially bad, but I didn't care, it was Skyrim, and it was (just about) playable. Still though to this day, I automatically dread going to certain places, even though now I have a PC that can max out Special Edition at 4K 60fps while barely breaking a sweat.

I have the G5 KC which is the i5 10th gen version of the same laptop with the same chassis and everything and I can tell you my laptop would easily hit 100 degrees in a stress test. The solution to this is simply underclocking/undervolting the CPU until it is incapable of exceeding 90 degrees. This move only costs about 10fps, so I think it's worth it. The fan noise is not a problem at all. With closed-back headphones and my game volume set to 50% I can't hear the fans at all even at full blast sitting right in front of the laptop as you would normally. Another thing the video did not mention is that the battery is removable just like the good ol' days, so you can remove it while gaming as batteries degrade with heat. I use my laptop for Uni too and with the refresh rate down to 60hz the screen down to 50% brightness and the CPU configured to draw as little power as it can it gives me about 4 hours-ish of normal use which lasts me through a bunch of classes but not the whole day. The screen is okay, but the purples are pretty bad. I noticed that a lens flare in a game should have been purple, but it was basically dark blue. The purple interface of Microsoft One Note also makes it clear as day that color accuracy was not the focus of this display. This sounds very critical of me, but in truth I love this laptop, it performs exactly as the benchmarks online say it should and comes at a great price/performance ratio. Just one problem though, I am not sure if this is just my model or all of them, but sometimes when I unplug my charger after charging the battery for a while, the laptop suddenly thinks it has 0% battery and shuts down/ goes to sleep. This is more of a hassle than a real problem because when I turn it on again my apps and tabs are exactly where I left them (cause it went to sleep) but if you have something that cannot be interrupted like a download then you will probably lose the file.

Price seems pretty good for a 3060 laptop. For comparison I got an Acer Nitro 5 (AN515-54) about 2.5yrs ago for £800, which has a 1650 & i5 9300H, 8GB RAM & 60Hz screen (more expensive models had 144Hz screen). The Nitro 5 was the best option I could see at the time and I have had no issues with it, but I was buying it more as a solid perf laptop that could be upgraded/repaired (2 RAM slots, 2 NVMe slots, SATA slot etc), with ability to play some games being a bonus. Whereas this Gigabyte laptop will have a much better gaming experience (potentially up to 2x perf?) for the same price, especially with option of DLSS (which the 1650 can't use). Saying all that though, gaming laptops are very noisy, so people sensitive to noise should really try one in a store first, to see if it will bother them. On my Nitro 5, even sitting idle the fans can crank up if 'Windows Defender' decides to run its 10th scan of the day. :/

Note that only 1 of the M.2 slots under the hood is actually PCIe 4.0, and it's actually a rebranded Clevo NH55HPQ, which I happen to have, but YT kept on deleting my comments no matter how much I tried. I was thinking about getting the G5 MD model, which seems to be identical in specs with the exception of a 3050 Ti vs 3060. I don't have crazy gaming needs when I'm away from my desktop, but have been really wanting to upgrade from my older Dell Inspiron 7567 with an i5-7300HQ + 1050 Ti combo. It's nice to see that the 11400H is an absolute beast of a midrange mobile CPU, seeing as this i5 is only 4c/4t with 2.5ghz base w/ 3.5ghz single core & 3.1ghz all core turbo. It's quite honestly between an i5-6400 - 6500 in terms of gaming performance...which isn't all that great when you look at modern chips. Hell, I'd be happy with a 10500H or R5 4600H at this point. I feel like in some games, the 1050 Ti can't even be fully utilized. I bought the laptop second hand for a bargain, otherwise I would've went for something with an 8300H since it likely would've aged better with the much better turbo speeds & extra 4 threads.

But it still sucks to see how WEAK laptop CPU's still are. I mean cmon, the RTX 3060 was only sitting around 40-50% usage in GTA V it was basically sleeping. I expected more from an 11400H. Thats just sad. My 12400F doesnt bottleneck my desktop 3060 at all in GTA V and im sure an 11400F wouldn't either. I just don't understand after all this time the majority of laptop CPU's are still bottlenecking their GPU counterparts.
@couriersix2443
@couriersix2443 2 жыл бұрын
@@yeetus59 it's cause the max TPD for mobile is usually 45w, while your desktop version is 65w. It has 1/3 more power to work with when it's within stock power limits. Which it won't ever go past as it is not a K-sku, unless you have a Z690 mobo and do a BCLK overclock. While I'll agree, mobile CPUs still "suck" when compared to desktop variants (just imagine how badly the 7300HQ is lol) they've still come a long way especially with core + thread counts. The first major 6-core CPU Intel offered for laptops was the i7-8750H, which is slower than the 10500H and 11400H. But like I said, they're all still 45w TDP and are not always powerful enough to fully push a GPU to max utilization, even though they're also rated for less power than their desktop counterparts
@yeetus59
@yeetus59 2 жыл бұрын
@@couriersix2443 Yeah I mean I get all the power limitations and stuff. But what I never understood is why pair such powerful GPU's with these weaker CPU's only for them to be severely bottleneck in most scenarios. It's literally just a waste of money if I cant fully utilize the hardware I spent the extra money on. Oh and since it's a laptop there is no way to alleviate a CPU bottleneck either besides locking the fps, something I shouldn't have to do if I have an RTX 3060... Personally I would opt for the weaker 3050 ti model and save the money. Because I can almost guarantee you the 11400H would push the same amount of frames it did with the 3060 model. Just kinda seems like backwards thinking releasing a product that bottlenecks right out of the box. But what do I know I guess laptop gamers are more worried about their measly battery life and overheating issues.

I then spent a few hours squeezing out all the performance I could get without spending any more money. Flashed the GPU VBIOS to 130W from a Strix G15, this has the added advantage of allowing the 5600H to hit it's true max boost clock @ 4.2 GHz, previously would only peak up to 4 GHz. Next, I OCed the 3060, +140 stable on core/+300 to memory, that's the highest it will go :( Finally, since you can't undervolt laptop ryzen CPUs, another :( I simply locked power limit down from 50 W to 25 W. The CPU wasn't power throttling yet but was getting too hot for my taste. End result is a time spy graphics score of 9258, for reference, desktop 3060 stock is around 8770. Sure OC the desktop and you'll get a slightly higher score but roughly equal performance while using 60W less is very impressive on the laptop side

I got the G5 KC - with i5-10500H instead of 11400H and boy howdy does it thermal throttle fast. Gotta use the FN+1 for full speed fans especially with 30-34 C heat. Fortunately - you can underclock the CPU for a tiny bit more power and less heat generated. But it does involve changing BIOS settings with Insyde-Tool. That helped a bit, but not enough to fully stop it from throttling. The i5 and 135 watts-ish version of RTX 3060 does work wonders though as it's great for any kind of light to even medium-high workloads and games. Wished I waited a bit tad longer and got 5600H + 3060 combo tbh. 10th gen gets extremely hot and due to how cooling is contructed in this laptop ( pipes go through CPU and GPU a ike, with one pipe more dedicated to the GPU ) and throttles not only itself but the 3060 too. The screen is amazing tho and having a numpad on 15 inch laptop is becoming rarity unfortunately so it's a nice addon - SD card reader is nice too! Wish it had one more USB type A or C on the right side though.

On ebay, I was able to buy a similar laptop for gaming, but mine is a Razor Blade 15 laptop with an i7-10875H cpu with 16 gb of ram and a RTX 2080 super and a 300 hz full hd screen. This laptop of mine seems to be from around early 2020 which I guess is still new enought to run the latest games.

Gaming laptops are really good. I have an i5 10th gen with a 1660 and I'm happy with it. To help with cooling I have my back plate off sitting on a laptop fan stand. It clips on anyway if I feel the need to take it with me somewhere

Nice video. I wish American gaming laptops were as affordable as in the UK.

Went for an MSI Delta 15 on Prime day for £50 more than linked Currys deal for laptop model with this spec as in this video. Luckily packing as good if not better RDNA2 graphics and Zen 3 CPU to boot!

A crucial piece of information for gaming laptops is the TGP - basically a power limit for GPU. Unlike for desktops it varies greatly and is set by the laptop manufacturer. So yes it is a 3060 Max-Q but what is the TGP ? (just it being max-q also isnt enough info ) I have seen 3070s put into superslim laptops with their TGP cut in half .. so in laptop world it is entirely possible for a lower end card to outperform the higher end if the cooling solution allows it and the laptop maker sets it that way.

I think this variant has 90-105 tgp limit

Just bought this for my GF but the RTX 3060 version was out of stock so we got the 3050 version. She doesn’t play Triple-A or any demanding titles so i think it’ll be fine. One thing to mention tho i had to lock the fps in Valorant at 100fps so the game would feel smooth with no dips, since it can drop from 144fps to 90-100 which cause stutter. Besides that its a very value Laptop would reccomend for any1 wanting to buy decent gaming laptop.

I do wish the SI's would offer an RGB free option for their towers. Laptops aren't appealing but the improvements are positive.

I have this laptop. Here are some issues/complaints I have: 1. Battery is pathetic, even for a gaming laptop. (To combat this, I have battery saver set to ALWAYS ON when on battery, and I have set it up to automatically switch the screen to 60 Hz on battery and 144 Hz when plugged in.) 2. Build quality feels slightly plasticky and cheap. (However, I'm not complaining at this price point, and the amount of deck flex isn't bad at all.) 3. Display isn't very color accurate (so I can't use this for serious video editing.) 4. There is a weird screen tearing issue when playing some games, only when V-Sync turned on, but not with it off. (Maybe this could be a vertical refresh timing issue due to passing through the iGPU???) 5. Keyboard layout is a bit cramped. (Right shift key is short length, and it is easy to accidentally press the up arrow key instead. Also, the number pad makes the keyboard off center.) 6. Trackpad is small, and response isn't that great. Also pad does not click down, but rather has two old fashioned click buttons at the bottom. 7. HDMI port is only 2.0, and the DisplayPort is a miniDP despite there being enough room for a full size port. And here's what I like: 1. Amazing value for money when on sale. (Virtually no other laptop for $800 USD has a full RTX 3060, reasonably powerful CPU, 16 GB of RAM, 512 GB Gen 4 SSD, and 144Hz 1080p display. Most at this price have a 3050, 1660, or worse...) 2. Good port selection including FULL SIZE Ethernet. 3. Customizable keyboard backlight but no stupid rainbow RGB vomit... 4. Very good upgradeability. RAM can be upgraded to 64 GB, empty m.2 slot, and even a full size 2.5 inch drive bay slot for an SSD or HDD! Hope this helps.

I'd love to see your cheap laptop from Argos, using "moonlight" to stream games from your PC (It streams the games to your laptop or tablet / mobile, or even some smart TVs) VS this laptop. I bet cash wise they could be quite similar (£200 laptop plus the great deals you've been getting on PCs VS £800 laptop) but which would give the better gaming experience?
