Seems like the only way forward will be active cables or fiber optics. In the short term, it sounds like they plan to have active DP 2.1 cables toward the end of the year.
@MrMartinSchou3 ай бұрын
The biggest problem is that no one really makes a copper cable that can handle 80 Gbit/second. I don't think 100 Gbit ethernet copper cables even exist at longer than 1 meter. At those speeds, we're pretty much exclusively at optical cables, and that makes stuff far more expensive - not just for the cable, but for the plugs as well.

I can't choose right now between this Gigabyte or Asus ROG Swift OLED PG32UCDM or MSI MPG 321URX QD-OLED. Is there any video comparing them side by side, especially HDR? Cause for some monitors it's only applied on the box but in reality when you turn on HDR nothing happens.
@Kraaketaer3 ай бұрын
That's the kind of stuff that's done for low end LCDs, typically things rated for HDR400, that don't even have any kind of backlight control - they just know how to decode a HDR signal, but don't have the hardware to do anything with it. None of this is relevant for a high end monitor, especially an OLED one. Now, Windows isn't the best at handling HDR on a system level, but for any of these monitors there'll be a major difference in any HDR-enabled application or game. If you want more in depth data, look at HWUB/Monitors Unboxed or Rtings, they both do in depth testing of HDR functionality.

The color deviations (Delta L, Delta C, Delta H) are minimal, indicating accurate calibration. The CIE 1976 u'v' diagram shows that the measured colors are close to the target colors, which is ideal for a well-calibrated display.

Gigabyte, please make this in 16:10, which is the proper PC gaming aspect, 16:9 is great for consoles, but I really want that extra 30% of vertical resolution and real estate for FPS and RTS games, not to mention 3rd person games like Alan Wake 2 look gorgeous in 16:10, 16:9 is just to beg of a downgrade, 4:3 is a massive improvement over 16:9, as you get nearly 50% more vertical resolution, but I canny see anyone making a modern 4:3 gaming OLED, so 16:10 will be a nice comprimise, PC games just look so much better in 16:10, Valve understands this, which is why the Steam Deck is 16:10, you just get such an improvement in POV, there is a reason 16:10 is known as the golden ratio, oh yeah, a 16:10 monitor means we get to play all our favourite classic PC games in proper 4:3 without butchering the vertical resolution and POV, as well as enjoy retro emulation, imo, it's not really a PC gaming monitor unless it's 16:10 (or 4:3 & 3:2).

I'm confused at 12:53: If you can do 8K at 60 Hz without DSC, you _should_ be able to do 4K at 240 Hz without DSC... 8K is exactly four times the size of 4K, so for every 8K frame you send without DSC you could just as well send four 4K frames. So, if your bandwidth is good enough for 8K at 60 Hz with 10 bit color, it should also be good enough for 4K at 240 Hz with 10 bit color. But: Unless I'm missing something, 54 Gbps is not enough for 240 Hz at 4K with 10 bit color _or_ 8K at 60 Hz. That would require 55.62 Gbps, so just a tiny bit more: 3840 * 2160 * 30bit * 240 = 59,719,680,000 bit, i.e. 55.62 Gb. That would also mean 54 Gbps is not enough for 8K at 60Hz and 10 bit color. Perhaps there's some data omitted in the data stream? Otherwise I don't see how 54 Gbps works out for either.

Yeah, that short cable thing has been an incoming issue for a while as I/O standards increase in speed. Luckily for all of us, the gains are negligible, so... we can just not pay hundreds of dollars for active DP80 cables of a usable length, and use DSC instead? Yep, sounds about right. At some point brute-force bandwidth increases just don't make sense any more, and this is definitely that point for display cables. When the longest passive cable you'll ever get for a standard is 1.5m, that standard is no longer suitable for desktop use. Seeing Plouffe show that kind of buyers remorse *for a feature he has yet to see if has any benefits* is honestly kinda mind-boggling. Would he even be able to tell the difference between 4k240 with and without DSC? Extremely unlikely. Which also makes the future-proofing argument invalid, 'cause it's not like this panel can do more with an uncompressed signal, it still peaks at 10 bit 4k240, and all future DP standards will be backwards compatible, so the monitor having the new standard gets you... cable length issues and increased power draw? Yay!
