Impressive. I do have to wonder sometimes though. If you're making something that big it seems not too much of a leap to just build a full size plane that a person could fly in.

Wow - what a beautiful experience all around - beautiful model, expert piloting, camerawork and production! Many thanks. Looks like 2 axis control so it must have been quite something to tune those wings for level flight! Many thanks from Sydney, Aust - Dave

Very nicely made RC! It's similar to Whitehead's design that was first to fly under power before the Wright's, who disputed the flight for having no photos taken while plenty of witnesses were present, a difference the wings of his used an Asian bow kite style without rigid stays for shape, it had a long triangular section to the tail and a 12hp motor.

Wonderful! I am curious as to the turning. Was wing warping used? I did not see ailerons. Or was this a simple 3 channel with rudder only used for turn? Thank you.

never knew a plane could take off at such low speed
@mpmyprojects6687
@mpmyprojects6687 5 жыл бұрын
It is a matter of wing design. If you design the wing to create lots of lift at low speed you will end up with much drag. So your plane will not be a fast fighter. If you design your wing for high cruise speeds you will need a higher take off speed as this wing is likely to produce less lift a lower speeds. Hence flaps were introduced to alter the shape of the wing in order to get much lift at low speeds and and be able to cruise at higher speeds. A flap simply gets out of the way when no longer needed, you end up with less drag.

Scale must be around 1:1.6. Just from the wingspan of 4.8m given in the notes to the video and assuming this is a model of the 1909 variant of the Bleriot XI (which it might not be) which had a span of 7.8m approx. Though there were many variants, but it must be somewhere around 1 : 1.6 or so. I'd love to know more about that self-made engine, it looks a beaut.

thanks for posting. we can all be grateful to bleriot; notwithstanding the FLAWS in this (ancient) design. at 1:25, it appears that the profile of the horizontal-stab is NOT symmetrical. if so, the stab is making UNWANTED lift; AT THE TAIL. at the same time, this model has a Tail-heavy dom; due in part, to the (far-aft) 'location' of the vert-stab, the use of a (heavy) tail wheel assembly and the use overly-massive framing components, distant from the cg/c-m. googletranslate

Hi David Davids. Yes you are correct in that the Bleriot X1 did indeed have a lifting tail section. I spoke to a chap at the Shuttleworth collection and he said the full size one there has it's C of G way back at about 75 % of the wing width (chord)

@@aeromodeller1 7,79?? you meant 8,5m for the wingspan right? but that still makes 4,8/8,5=0,56 so either the numbers are wrong or the shape of the RC doesn't follow the real one.
@aeromodeller1
@aeromodeller1 5 жыл бұрын
@@ericpique Good point. Bleriot XI was not an individual aircraft, but a type, and they came in several sizes. There were also other variations in details. It was widely "copied" and various plans were published. The original was 7 m span. It had a teardrop fin over the cabane, tip elevators, smaller rudder balance area, four blade propeller and tailwheel. At the time of the Channel flight, the cabane fin had been removed, a two blade prop fitted and the span increased by 79 cm to 7.79 m. (Sources vary. Munson says it is 7.80 m) This model seems to match that configuration. The caption says the model span is 4.8 m, so the scale ratio would be 4.8/7.79 = 0.6162, an odd ratio.
