The white mask in the beginning, when she splits it in two, making a V shape, references the Korean beauty Standard in which a V shape face is the most beautiful feature, yet hers isn't, hence why she asks " am I attractive?" And then says that of course she is. This is, in a way, some social critique towards the Korean standards of beauty We see many different colors being used , reflecting different aspects/sides of her personality, I could be wrong but, what I get from this is, that it's her way of saying " hey I'm not only a belting vocalist" " I'm not this one facet idol you think I am ". Yellow being her youthful/playful side. Red being her seductive side. Green being her "grounded" down to earth side. Pink representing the "Glamorous" performer side ( with the sparkles and all ) The News Paper thing could be either the "modelesque" side, but I would lean more it being a representation of her fierce side, the no-half-assing things side of her, it's either black or white and the way her hair is cropped with the red lipstick being the only color accent, enforced that strict/fierce image. The All white being the representation of the perception people have from her. This is later enforced when she starts breaking the stuff and thus "revealing" her "true colors" (paint coming out ) The red crop t-shirt line references her solo debut Spit it out. That Winnie the Pooh reference with the "My friend Piglet" line , chef's kiss 🤣 So basically this song and MV is Solar saying " yeah I'm all that which you think of me, but I am also so much more than that"

@@yazmins.2157 no she didn't. It's the math I do from the imagery/concept/lyric. Since Kpop is always full of symbolism and hidden meanings. The mask is in fact a molding of her own face so she is literally "breaking the mold" but figuratively breaking the V mold.

This song was so catchy and so much fun. I just freaking love her. Every look was insane. Also, her album versions, pictures, photocards, and posters were awesome. Every member of Mamamoo is so talented as a soloist too.

There are two showterview episodes with Solar and both of them are funny. The first is heavily referenced during the second episode so I suggest watching both. Jessi and Solar have great chemistry together. Solar's lyrics should not be taken only at face value (pun was unintentional but since it fits, let's just say it is intended). She seldom explains her songs nor her concepts but they are filled with layers of meaning and depth. She loves using figures of speech in her writing and since we only rely on translations, we cannot really go in depth with what she really means. Most end up confusing and fly over our heads. I also noticed that she likes changing povs of who is speaking midsong just like in her song Hello. Just a little observation on her song writing style. As a composer though, she plays a lot with genres, tempos and even song structure. I don't know if you've noticed but the song has an extended pre chorus, a three-part chorus and doesn't have a bridge making it shorter but increases its replay value especially with it's catchy tune. The length of the song also fits the theme of giving you something but leaves you wanting more part of the lyrics. For the MV, I think the mask is her persona as Solar (the celebrity) and she breaks it in half to show us a glimpse of Yongsun, herself underneath that has many colors. We then see her in different colorful outfits and sets all representing a different side to her. (Yellow-fun,bright,happy; red-passionate,fiery; pink-feminine,tender, green-harmonious, balanced etc.) Honey in their gaze or Honey dripping from ones eyes is a Korean expression meaning to look at another lovingly or full of love and affection. So the butterflies and the bees (probably the public) looks at her persona with honey in their eyes oblivious of the other different sides/colors she has under the surface. Note that the mask is white and can be painted with different colors, and she also has 3 white outfits throughout the MV. With her breaking more white figures towards the end, colors burst out from the inside possibly meaning that she has shown her different colors underneath the white persona but is only a glimpse as she returns to the blank mask. The blank mask that people can paint whichever color they like on her public image, but in the end all of those colors are still hers. There's more to the mv than this interpretation like challenging beauty standards that Solar is very consistent at doing, the media's framing of celebrities, the public's perception, etc. It goes on, layer after layer.

It's interesting to me that Solar participated in writing the song but doesn't relate to the character. I like your interpretation of her putting on a face or coming out of her shell then going back once the performance is over. I think this is something a lot of performers can relate to. I wouldn't say she's entirely innocent off stage though. To quote Solar herself *ahem*: "I'M JUST A PERVERT!! NOT A CRAZY ONE!! I'M JUST A PERVERT....!" 🤣 Mamamoo are, in my very biased opinion, the funniest group when they're messing around backstage together! You have to watch a compilation, or go through mmmtv because they are a chaotic mess lol

Solar is an artist that is hard to define as she seeks for challenges and she constantly improve herself while deep down she is looking for self-expression. All those superfacial images are like her voices, versatile and with many variants. Her voices change a lot to express different emotions. I encourage you to check her Solar Emotions, a cover series of Korean popular songs in the past with great arrangements instrumentally and her unique interpretation, in which you can find some beautiful ballads that sooth your ears. On the other hand, also check her OSTs. So far, she has done 5 'solo' OSTs and none of them is similar. She expresses the emotions of the songs with drama and story in mind that has brought unique flavor to each of them. I like how you interpret lyrics while listening to music in other reactions. However, listening to Solar's singing I often start without lyrics as she is excellent in emotion delivery. I sometimes write my thoughts after listening to the music and compare to the actual lyrics. It is so much fun to find out how much I get and how delicate she interprets the music.

Showterview is such a great show. Having questions in English is a recurring thing with Showterview because Jessi isn't the greatest speaker of Korean so she turns things on their head by having questions in English. Speaking of Solar interviews, on one of the music shows she and another musical act got interviewed, but she was far shorter than everyone else and really stood out. The next shortest was I believe a member of Ive who was still like 15 cm taller than Solar. So afterward, Solar joked that the show had her stand in a hole. If you didn't know, all of Mamamoo is short. Loved the rap. I do like the whole Winnie the Pooh reference and figured you would pick up on that. BTW you have to check out her song "Big Booty" off this album. She did post a video of it on her channel which features footage of her recording it.

She looks absolutely amazing! Her interview with Jessi was hilarious!!! Jessi always kills me! This was the second time she's been on Jessi show and they were both hilarious! Her honey colored hair and her lips and eyebrows looks so freaking good! The outfits in this mv look so good and all the colored sets! The choreo is really fun! She did a relay dance and a dance practice dressed as a bee! She's such a character! She and Moonbyul did a video this morning singing each other's songs it was great!!! This is my favorite song of all the Mamamoo solo comebacks this year its just so catchy!!! And the album is so Solar!!! Raw is so good and Big Booty cracks me up! I love the gloves holding her bust on the newspaper outfit! Call back the gloves in her hair on Hip!

MAMA MAMA MAMAMOO!!! Always enjoy your reactions, especially of Mamamoo. Solar is so talented and I love that she, like all members of Mamamoo, is true to herself in her solo efforts. She is driven to always try new musical arrangements and doesn't settle for belting high notes in every song, which we all know she could do with ease. Don't forget that the Korean Netflix Mamamoo Documentary Film - WHERE ARE WE NOW - just dropped today, at least episode #1 did. I saw it a few hours ago and it's off to a good start. Sorry I didn't have the link but I was pressed for time. More Mamamoo please.

Great reaction. In one of the pre-release promotion videos. Solar did a Q&A session as two characters. Her stage persona and her private persona. I personally felt it gave a lot of insight into what she was thinking about this song. In the interview, It was almost as if she was trying to say. "I do these things because it's expected of someone in my industry with my talent, position and beauty. But outside the spotlight I'm not really comfortable with this presentation of myself" Of course, that's just my take as a distant observer and relatively new fan.( 1 year) i could be mis-interpreting everything. :)

Nice try in attempting an instant analysis but imo that's almost impossible with Mamamoo. Visually and aurally MMM MVs are too much sensory overload to catch all the nuances and layers of meaning on first view. Yes, on one level it's about playing hard to get but imo that's not really what's going on in Honey. The metaphorical bees and butterflies are attracted to her looks and her celebrity (the newspaper scene) but they don't really know her as a person, as Kim Yongsun, so they get swatted away. The mask represents her public persona as Solar. Her face is also seen in the form of sculptures as tho she's an object that's been put on a pedestal for viewing at a safe, respectful distance in an art gallery. The mask and sculptures are blank, white idealized images of her. When she destroys the sculptures she reveals the wide variety of colors in her real personality.

@@DGReacts Solar only gives general, broad summaries of the message she or MMM wants to convey in a song and rarely gets into details even when she's asked a specific question. In this case a moomoo asked her about the mask and she said it represented Solar but, as usual, she stopped there and didn't explain how the Solar mask fit into the song & MV. Anyway, what seems to be a silly fun song with a colorful MV actually has something to say about judging people based on appearance or fame or what others say about them. It's the flip side of Hip but instead of hate over things that are superficial or nobody's business it's about liking someone for all the wrong reasons.

@@kudgeond755 I remembered what she said about the mask when a fan asked her about the meaning of putting it back. She smirked and said maybe the MV doesn't convey the message clearly. My interpretation is similar to you and she only gives what people want to see and or she wants people to see. That is actually the main point of this superficial judgement that bothers her and she has to live with it as she is a celebrity and an idol. She clearly wants to break that superficial mask to show the real colorful self but people only get to know her by the superficial impressions and she has to put the mask back, the persona for her to work and live in this society like everybody does. In almost all the interviews, she said she think everyone have different look implying uniqueness for each individual, which is colorful if you break the superficial persona like how it is presented in the MV, and same for herself. So, I think it is also why RAW is the intro, in which she expresses her wildness and passion in dark like the desire of self-expression. Then, in FACE, she shows us the ideal pale mask is like a canvas allowing her to show different chams as faces but still they are all sort of personas not the real her inside. Solar is a person who thinks profoundly but very shy in words or not really good at it. She has so many feelings that she could not express easily but excellent in delivering by music and that is the reason why we love Solar Emotion and all those snippets that she have ever sung like The good old country, About 30, We, and etc. Now, we have "How can I love the hearbreak, you're the one I love" in our bucket list to ask for full a cover like begging for crying more. Personally, I need more English song covers as her tone in English is beautiful. BTW, she chooses to live or act simple but she is not simple at all. Just my thought to ease my Monday blue in eary morning.
