The fact Odysseus is wearing Polites’ head band- just my heart. AND THE SYMBOLISM OF IT TURNING INTO THE BLOOD ON HIS HANDS
@raymondfisheriii79111 ай бұрын
To me it still feels like there’s ego there, but it’s also like a mixture of pride and wrath. It’s a threat of “We ever cross again, I’m finishing what I started here next time”… like he believes there may be a next time and that’s when he’ll finish the job, but he can’t bring himself to right now because he just wants to go home. Which then leads all the other choices of Poseidon as simultaneously him being pissed at Odysseus, but also just trying to stop the threat that he is to his children preemptively. Dude literally threatened to kill his son later, makes sense to kill him before he gets the chance to make good on that threat.
@travislyonsgary11 ай бұрын
Definitely some ego in there still, as he could have had both mercy and neutralization of a threat...until he announced his name. Now there is a name and a home given to the other cyclops's that live on the island even if the Cyclops he blinded didn't have a line to his father.

My thoughts exactly! It came with some grave consequences but you gotta admit, that part of the song was damn cool. I liked how he first said “remember them”, a line which we are familiar with at this point “next time you dare choose not to spare” tapping into the theme of mercy. “Remember them” -familiar line again. “Remember us!” Twisting familiar line and shifting focus to him and his crew. “Remember me!” Those two words alone said so much (you caused me pain, you killed people who are dear to me, and I want you to remember that I hurt you back, I want you to remember the consequences of your bloodshed), there was just so much emotion in those two words. “I’m the reigning king of Ithaca” beginning to tell the cyclops who he is while establishing that he is a powerful person. “I am neither man nor mythical” -continuing to establish that he is a powerful person. “I am your darkest moment” -once again reminding the cyclops what happened when he killed people who wished him no harm. “I am the infamous..” - build up “ODYSSEUS” - he stops singing and the music goes silent as he shouts his name so that everyone who could here would remember it.

For me, the problem of Odysseus is more of a tragedy. Athena's never been clear, she's not as terrible as works like Ovid's would suggest, but she was distant. She was wise but not empathetic. This means she didn't have the foresight (ironically) to think that Odysseus would need a reason to kill The Cyclops

I mean, the original had a good reason too, he was an arrogant and prideful king. That was the whole thing, he can be wise and have all the good fortune in the world but a human is still flawed and can succumb to their base failings. Making it a reactionary thing kinda lessons the overall point of the story but it works for a musical retelling. @@xsxeno The Odyssey did have this moment, yes, but it was very different. In The Odyssey, he did it purely because he was prideful and egotistical. A final laugh in the cyclops's face which turns into a massive lesson in hubris and how those who are full of ego will fall regardless of wit or strength. In Epic, it's spite and anger. He just lost his best friend, his first huge loss, when he tried to be peaceful (like his best friend suggested he do) with the Cyclops after a major fuck up. Athena telling him to finish the job and enforcing the mentality that everything against him needs to die while he's grieving pushes him (hence the "is this what it means to be a warrior of the mind?" line).

I mean the whole point is he absolutely wasn't trying to end any cycle, but just rewriting things to make himself the good guy, hence Athena warning him not to leave the Cyclops alive, she knew he was the wronged party and leaving him blind and helpless was cruel. He says he came with peace but he came to loot food and kill sheep. Obviously it was food he needed but the same is true of the Cyclops, he gives in to wrath and spite and so does Odysseus and in his arrogance he does the one thing that can ruin everything for his crew, turning this into a complete disaster. That's literally what 'tragedy' means, it's pain and sorrow brought on one's self.
@doloresgronenberg5882 Жыл бұрын
@@shotgunbadger, he came to get sheep without knowing they belonged to someone else, and no, Athena didn't wanted him to kill the cyclop because he was the wronged party (which he wasn't), but because in her eyes he was still a thread until he were dead, even she herself in the song says, and yes, Odysseus was the good guy and did what was right, even if he almost broke down (which is totally normal) and in the end things ended in disaster, which, spoiler, happens many times, I love all these people saying these thing and acting like totally ruthless when in reality the would be obviously a lot more sentimental in a situation like this (more so losing their best friend and mamy more men with him), not even as strategical or smart as him to do thing like the lotus on wine or the "nobody" name, so everyone would have made the dame disaster, but since the beginning without being as smart and genius as him, and it requires far more strength to fogive and be merciful to someone after that someone kills your best friend than being totally ruthless and heartless, although yes, his pain got the better of him and made him do something he shouldn't have, numbing his senses and lowering his guard, but again that's normal after something like this, it happens to people many times in real life
@RandomPerson-ti7qx4 ай бұрын
@@doloresgronenberg5882 I think it's even worse when, typically he probably wouldn't have pulled that bargaining thing he did, but did it right after "Open Arms" where his best friend (who died like immediately after jfc epic why?) literally told him to relax and be more open to the world's kindness. Like, it seemed like he hoped it could work out with the "woah this is a major misunderstanding, I'm so sorry" explanation and a gift (drugged for extra safety), but ended up getting the whole "you'll die last" and a dead best friend as a response. That literally dashed all his hopes of a peaceful conclusion, which was only worsened when Athena just went "yeah, finish your damn job" and pushed at him until he gave his info out in spite and anger (among other feelings).

That's an interesting looking greek ship... Seriously though, love the depiction of Athenas and Odysseus internal dialogue and the visual humour of the crew. Also appreciate the simple tw at the beginning. Wish more people would use that.

And to your left you'll see an idiot making the biggest mistake of his life, costing him his entire crew and another decade to get home. Ironically he's supposed to be the smart one of the crew and the wisest hero in Greek mythology.

In his defense, the bag opening didn't help them get home any faster (it actually took them away from it when they were RIGHT THERE!)

Love how you portrait the dimension shift (?) when Athena transformed from a owl to a goddess.

*This might actually be my favourite anamatic for Epic so far!* You made it so dynamic and that makes it feel real!!

I love the headband! It becomes wonderful symbolism in your animatics and is a fun OSP reference

Even though he made the worst mistake of his life in this moment (out of grief for his friend and fallen brothers), it's just so absolutely badass. So at least it was a badass mistake? xD But rip to all 600 of those men.

Should have ended with a shot of Polyphemus smiling after hearing the man who blinded him say his real name.

Honestly, Polyphemus probably would have been face-palming as well. Like WHAT THE HECK WAS ODYSSEUS TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH???

I just love how this scene is made to look like a great climax to the saga that anyone going into it blind (me) will only later find out just how much he screwed his crew over

Athena: Hey don't do something stupid Odysseus: Screw you you can't tell me what to do, watch me do the stupidest thing ever

A few things to consider about this scene. #1. Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon. #2. Odysseus is Athena's champion. #3. Poseidon and Athena hate each other's guts. In a scenario where Odysseus did finish off Polyphemus, like Athena told him. He in theory could have made home safe with his remaining crew. However, in a very unlikely scenario where Poseidon found out Odysseus killed his son. Then out either parental love or his honor/pride being besmirched. He would take revenge for his son. If he finds out before Odysseus makes it home, The Odyssey continues as normal. If he finds out after Odysseus makes it home. Poseidon would probably flood all of Ithaca. At the very least Odysseus could never go in the ocean. The worst part would be that Odysseus wouldn't know why Poseidon has a vendetta against him.
