Interesting fact: Despite the amazing 2nd place in Eurovision, RAI did not stream the eurovision final that year because in the same days Italians were called to express their opinion on the divorce law and, of course, the Church accused Gigliola of promoting the YES(or SI) campaign with her song

'Non Ho l'Eta' sung by Gigliola Cinquetti in 1964 is the best song ever to win Eurovision. Gigliola's 'Si' in the `1974 competition came second to Abba's 'Waterloo'. That contest took place in Spring 1974, a month after President Pompidou of France had died in office, and as a consequence the French delegation did not attend and no votes were cast from France. One can imagine that all the French votes would have gone to Gigliola's 'Si' - and none to 'Waterloo'. (No French judge would have given a vote to a song with that title, and sung in English). If, with all the French votes, Gigliola had won with 'Si', would Abba have become as famous and successful as they did? Did Pompidou's death in office have the consequence of 'creating' the Abba phenomenon? In an interview in about 2020 (on KZbin somewhere) ,Gigliola Cinquetti is asked about 'Si' and whether she would like to have won the 1974 Eurovision contest. She smiles and just says in English, 'The winner takes it all'.

Sometimes simple events can have amazing consequences and I had no idea Pompidou’s death affected the contest in this way (and yes no French jury would have rewarded a song like Waterloo). I often think how different the 21st century might have been if Al Gore had not been robbed of the 2000 US election
