Technically three times! The year before the rattlesnake, she was attacked and nearly killed by an off the leash dog on a road trip we were taking.

She also nearly died as a puppy before I got her. There was some sort of chemical put down on the man's carpet who had the litter of puppies and she was very ill. A few of her littermates did die. I still do not know what exactly the story behind that was, but she was a one and a million find.

Who told you they're timid? They are aggressive as fuck... They stand their ground, they don't strike like a snake does, they bite, hold on, and shake...

They are aggressive as fuck when approached. Remind me of how Tokay Geckos are as well. But they avoid if they can and seldom have interactions if they can avoid it. There only real defense is breaking it's own teeth off in the predator and causing immense pain-- in order to crawl away as fast as possible. Otherwise, they are a few inches tall, reasonably immobile vulnerable desert dweller, often left open in plain sight. They have to be swiftly aggressive if any animal bigger than two inches tall approaches. She definitely stood her ground. And my Doberman was trying to kill her/bite her. She bit first on her lower jaw. I did not see prior, but based on my handling of her-- She is was so aggressive, that even in the tank when I moved around to another side, she would follow me snapping and hissing at the glass and meaning it. They do not take any chances. I am very surprised my baladi dog was able to grab hold of her and flip her up in the air without getting bit. Rattlesnakes tend not to hold ground, except for I have seen Mohave's a bit more prone to confrontation. But if you back them up or you are suddenly on top, they will not back down. When I grab them off the road so they don't get run over (people do it on purpose a lot here) I usually make them go into a coil to strike and get them then. Otherwise, it's less predictable when they are going to stand ground.

I'm glad that sugar tree is ok! She is a true friend. A gila monster's bite is no joke... Coyote Peterson was bitten by one once. One of the two time where he really couldn't tough up the pain, he had to get help (The second was a huge centipede).

I'm glad, too. I know that it is not lethal in any case I could find and I knew this at the time having done wildlife rehab and studying all animals native to Arizona. But I thought she was definitely not going to pull through due to her old age, sensitivity and the Doberman's hereditary blood disorders. If the Gila had bitten one of my other dogs, I would not have thought at all that death was a possibility. I heard they are as painful as a rattlesnake bite. I do not know how painful that is, but I have gotten the venom of an invasive Cane Toad into a cut on my hand. That was the most pain I have been in or at least a tie. I was worried it may kill me because they are known to kill children and being under 100 pounds-- I was within range. They are also supposed to contain DMT in the venom, that makes you hallucinate or otherwise become mentally foggy. I absolutely did not experience any 'tripping'. Just horrible pain and rapid heart beat. I credit having been okay to the fact that I was wearing a robe and tied off my arm right away with the strap. And I have chronic low blood pressure, which finally came in handy for once. When my heart sped up from the venom, it was probably around the blood pressure of a normal person. :)

camelsandfriends Wow! Thanks for sharing your experiences! Well, I'm glad that you were ok as well! Quick thinking as always :) I never heard of a cane toad, but I yes, I know that the venom from some of them can be a serious deal... Can it be that being bitten around the jaw helped Sugar Tree? If there is more skin/fat in this area, I mean. Because with snakes, I've heard that many fatal bites on dogs occur on their legs, due to them being thin and thus the venom runs faster into the blood system... I think that the most venomous animals near me would be either certain types of Vipers, black widows and Mediterranean recluse spiders (Which can be found a lot in many hoses. Very nasty venom). But then there are the Oriental Wasps which I actually hate lol They are large and aggressive and their sting hurts like hell... Beautiful though. I once had to walk through a swarm of them... Lucky for me, they were obsessed with soda that was spilled on the ground so they didn't pay attention to me. I have no idea why really.

It's best to think quickly! Stay in the moment always and you'll always be where you need to be, when you need to be. :) These cane toads come in with the rainy season. Every year Sugar Tree grabs one by the mouth at least once. And... I have no idea why she does this knowing what they do. I really wonder if she enjoys the DMT experience that is released with their venom. Otherwise, she has done it over a dozen times and she knows what will happen when she grabs them by the mouth. They can kill a dog easy. Generally smaller dogs. I take a hose and wash out Sugar Tree's mouth, but I don't worry too much. She will get one this year and I guess that is summer fun. I was very curious as to why I had no side effects of hallucinating or any symptoms relating to DMT. Afterwards, I searched online and I found that it is currently unknown as to why-- but 5% of the population are immune to a reaction from DMT. I guess I am one of them. I assume it must be genetic? I hope to find out because it is interesting and a low percentage. Doubly so, when you consider that DMT is naturally found in the human brain. To be immune to something your body naturally produces in small quantities-- when taken in a larger dose-- is quite odd. We have a species of recluse here, but I can never tell if it was or the harmless wolf spider. I have never had a problem with one. Bark scoprions are a threat. They are the only scorpion that can kill an adult with one string. And they are small and everywhere in certain parts of the Southeastern state. And we have three species of South American invasive fire ants-- including the bullet ant-- said to be the most painful of all. I have been bit four times now. I have been shot zero times. But I think that the name of bullet somehow is fitting, because I would honestly prefer an actual bullet next time, than to be bit by one of them. The pain is fire and it holds steady without wavering for a very long time. They are known to kill horses and cattle by swarming when they sleep. I poison by yard every year, they are a real problem. I would remove them from my area any day over the snakes and lizards. My wolf was bit by one or several and attacked me out of sheer panic a couple years ago. Totally understandable.

I just checked the time stamp and that is a Cactus Wren. Sounds like a juvenile and probably from this Spring's hatch. I have more Cactus Wrens then I can count living around the land... because unlike nearly everyone else in the area... my property is entirely fenced in. So they have a huge degree of safety by nesting here in the cactus. They are interesting birds and next Spring I should do a video on them. It's very fun to watch them hatch and grow up in their nests-- buried deep inside cholla cactus and safe from harm, but low to ground to view. And thank you for watching. I am so happy to. It was horrible thinking I was going to lose her on my living room floor just out of nowhere on a normal morning...

The SugarTree adventures. What a brave dog. She really cares for his pack. I wonder if it's only instinct or if there's some kind of emotions when she defends you against ''monsters'' ? I'm glad that she's doing ok. It was very interesting to see the blood on the floor. It looks like the neurotoxin burnt it. Don't know if the same reaction occurs even if the blood is not exposed to oxygen. Sorry for the Gila Monster, I would have like to see him going back on his way but, you did everything ok. You had decisions to make and, like first responders do, you went to the most urgent situation first. At least, as you said, the Gila Monster was used to teach something to your other animals. I wonder that often, too. Sugar Tree is very stoic and she seems rather detached and emotionless- especially if you are anyone but me. I think though that she is very much bonded to me and actually cares. I think the acts are out of loyalty and ultimately that is what the Doberman was bred for. To not want to protect the human, would be very atypical for the breed. This is why they were used in the Vietnam War. They bonded quickly and in jungle warfare there were many trip wires and other traps setup to kill by ambush. The Dobermans would go first and because of their high sensitivity and dislike of anything unfamiliar-- they would notice a wire easily and several at least were known to have sacrificed their life for the solider coming up behind in a situation that was in inescapable. They also were paired in foxholes with soldiers, staying alert while the solider slept. They would not lay down themselves knowing that their partner was vulnerable and if that is not out of pure self-sacrifice-- This is a huge difference between Dobermans and other breeds. Most other dogs would not think twice of cozying up in a foxhole to fall asleep with their human--- Dobermans do. They were never used in a US war again, though. Because their role as highly sensitive xenophobics was the point of their service, and ultimately a paradox. One that made them useless after trauma. OCD and PTSD are waiting first for those burdened with a mind that is focused on finding something of concern in every frame of view. This is a more in depth psychological explanation on why I chose not to take Sugar Tree to the vet. Every glance out the car window would have been to find that one thing that may harm me. Familiarity helped to ground her. I believe it formed that way for this reason. I am going to copy and paste what I wrote to someone else: I think that it formed that way because as the blood hit the floor in the form of droplets. When this happened the nerotoxin would have been hit with a center of mass that would have caused it to spread outwardly toward the edges of each radius. Then when the blood began to dry, it dried first around the outer edges, leaving the more denser material to shrivel up around the droplets with their middles having been bonded by the fact that the outer rim shielded the lighter material from being able to dry as fast. I hope that makes sense. It would be basically as picturing a bomb blast, but upside down hitting the ground. I am also glad the Gila Monster was used to help prevent another bite. I think it is unlikely I will see another any time soon, but you never know. Maybe they are becoming more common in the area. Thank you for the comment. Dobermans are very unique dogs and I contemplate them a lot from a behavioral standpoint.

The more you know about an animal (humains too, by the way ;), the more you understand his behavior and, generaly, the less you act badly toward him. It's only a suggestion ! English is not the language I speak every day, so what I wrote was perhaps not clear !? But that's ok. It's the best way to learn. So I will try to be clearer :) My idea was short videos about, for example, water buffalo in which you would explain the origin of the animal, its peculiarities, anectodes, etc. A bit like you often do in answers to subscriber questions. For example, when you explained to me that the Dobermans were used during the Vietnam War and the speed with which they bonded to the platoon members, their "will" to defend the men of the platoon. This allowed me to better understand the behavior of this breed of dogs and want to inform me more. It's not necessary that it is only facts approved by the scientific community !! Your way of explaining things is very interesting and you have enough knowledge and experience to do it. I hope it's a little clearer? loll.

ok 1 dead lizard I watched the camel 1 first and thought it was a live one! I swear i heard you say it's moving , and no dont stand on it then the camel rubbed it out! I have sometimes. Usually people who I have met through needing something done-- like the hauler with a trailer to take my buffalo to the vet. She brought her family over many times and it is normally situations like that. For my own safety, because of animal rights activist and the risk of legal liability-- I don't currently allow complete strangers unless it is for business such as buying/selling a sheep/animal or renting a trailer. I hope one day I can be open to the public with a petting zoo that focuses on education, unlike any other where you feed them and learn nothing. I have a long way to go and mostly that is finding the money to do it, or it would be done tomorrow! :)

You are so lucky as people who say the Gila is just painful didn't get a real hard clamping bite and everyone documented where the lizard was on for 30 seconds and had to be beaten or pried off (3 cases I found) the person almost died and if they were any later to hospital they would have died due to complications a hospital can deal with, like suffocation from a closed swollen air ways. These people were told if the ever take another bite they will die due to forming a massive allergy from the 1st bite. Even though dogs are tougher than us, please see if a dog trainer has a way to teach all your beautiful Puppies to leave lizards alone as Sugar Tree may get roped into a fight again protecting the younger dogs that didn't learn the same lesson from that day, Possibly get a toy one to test reactions or give a live one to ya camel to press the off button with his foot LOL I feel sorry for the lizard and did laugh none the less as you seem to try do the right thing and the last thing you expected happened LOL you crack me up! Its in ya draw then lost in the car and finally sacrificed to the camel God. God bless you;-)

Thank you. That is my Uncle's coat who passed away. I think it is from the Vietnam war. He did not serve, he just had an interest. And no, I don't. I don't know anyone at all and I have no friends or even associates that live in the same state as me. Animals definitely make more sense to me, but if I knew someone to go out and be social... I would go on a rather limited mildly anti-social basis. It's quite common that I only leave the property once a week to go into town. Which I would be fine with, but I live alone and though I agree that people strongly involved with animals, usually can't relate to humans well. Humans are social by nature and it isn't healthy at all to be so isolated.

He went missing quite awhile back. I pray that he is in a new home, but I don't know what happened. This was done with intent to hurt me. Whether he was driven from the house, taken away by car, given to a shelter, or re-homed-- or even killed. I do not know. I wish for the day that he appears on craigslist or comes back into my life after having been found or possibly adopted if he was dumped at a shelter. There is a vlog where I talk about this and it is very painful for me, so I only did once. You can find it under my vlogs and the title was something like, "I wasn't ready to talk about this..."

The actions of this person really show lack of compassion and empathy to everyone and everything. I was around a lot more than others-- therefore the hatred that she likely felt for herself would simply could not be accepted in full self-awareness. And hard work is not known to those that disdain their own selves and I made myself around too much for her easy re-direction of that hate. I believe that she dumped Pancake off in the desert. Because I have known her to do this to other people as fact. I do not believe that she killed him-- directly. I don't believe she found him a home or took him to a shelter-- because sociopaths are too lazy to bother to care. But there is a small chance that someone found him. I think sometimes that I feel that he is alive. I wish I knew. I really miss him and want him back, but if he were just in a nice home that would be enough. I am done with this person entirely and I don't talk about it too often anymore. Several cans of moth ice crystals, not mothballs, and a fertilizer spreader, just spread it around the borders of your property, it keeps all sorts of varmits away, even those that bite your dogs

I don't think hat would be effective against rattlesnakes or gila monsters. Is it meant for small mammals? I get mice that try to invade the house when it starts to get cold. I use electronic devices to drive them out. They work, but not well enough and I dislike having to poison them. But I can't have a mouse infestation... and in the very rural area I live-- there are many mice and only a few houses to pick from to get warmth. It's like a mouse exodus every year around the last week of October.

camelsandfriends And you would be wrong, the smallest thing moth ice crystals won't bother are coyotes and feral pigs, and the scent makes the pigs think twice... If you don't believe me, ask a toxicologist what paradichlorobenzine does to a nervous system

I don't not believe you, I just haven't heard of it. And since reptiles sense of smell is so different from mammals, I was unsure how it could be effective against both. I also don't recall ever hearing about this practice before and I did quite a lot of research on methods to keep rattlesnakes away last year when my Doberman was bit and almost died. The overwhelming ruling was that there is no way. Introduce a King Snake seemed to be the most totally reliable. There are pellets and sound barriers, but the reviews are mostly complaints that they do not work, or they are inconsistent. I don't have a problem with the pigs because all my land is fenced. A coyote can climb a fence, but they usually look for easier opportunities than that. I have only had one on my property twice and it was because the gate was open and the coyote was semi-tame. So far the only predator that has been inside the perimeter fence has been some feral/neglected dogs. My loss was once a goose from a solo overweight lab. Very irritating. when you have to worry more about your neighbors and their practice of letting their dogs out to roam intentionally-- over the mountain lions and coyotes that have yet to claim one of my animals.

If you watch until the end of the video. I tried everything I could to rehab and release the Gila Monster... I would only kill in self-defense and in the case of myself and a non-lethal animal-- I would get bit over harming her.

No problem! I also remove rattlesnakes from my land instead of kill them. At risk of myself being bit. I take them off roads too so they will not be hit. I have killed one once, but it was a desperate situation and I had no choice.
