Gilbert Arenas DESTROYS The New York Knicks' Front Office as he and the Gil's Arena Crew discuss the Knicks recent trade for OG Anunoby and debate whether or not it was a good move. They also question Julius Randle's long term role with the team before highlighting all the wrong moves the Knicks have made over the years and why they need a superstar to get them back into the NBA tier of elite franchises.
Gil’s Arena premieres every Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday at 11:30am PT / 2:30pm ET.

People keep saying that the Knicks need to get a Top 10-15 Superstar. NO TEAM is giving such a player up this season OR next summer either. Let me list them out in no particular order: 1) Embiid, 2) Doncic, 3) SGA, 4) Giannis, 5) DFox, 6) KD, 7) Trae Young, 8) Curry, 9) Tatum, 10) Edwards, 11) Jokic, 12) Lillard, 13) Maxey, 14) LBJ, 15) Donovan, 16) Halliburton, 17) Kahwi, 18) Morant, 19) DBook, 20) KAT EVERY ONE of these players are on playoff contending teams, except LBJ, and Trae, and they're not leaving anywhere. NONE of these 17 players are gonna sign with Knicks this summer in free agency either. Donovan Mitchell is the only superstar that could get moved, but Cleveland has already rejected multiple trade offers, and has told everyone that they keeping him past summer 2024. So what happens now? Knicks should just give up and waste 2 seasons hoping for a 0.1% chance that Giannis or Jokic signs with the Knicks? No, you go all in on Brunson and Randle, and build around them. They're only signed through this season and next. They're both going to opt-out during summer of 2025 anyway, so let's see what we can do with them. And guess what? If they do well and push Boston to a Game 7, that will definitely attract some players who might want to sign in free agency, or demand a trade for summer 2024. Having said that, getting OG, and another Top 20-30 player who can defend and perform well off-the-ball so that they don't step on Brunson/Randle's toes, is totally the right play here.

I think Luka is still on trade watch imo. They're currently the 7 seed with only 3 games separating them from the 11th seed, and the west is crazy loaded. It's very much on the board that they could miss the playoffs for the second year in a row, especially considering how unreliable kyrie is. And if that happens or even a early playoff exit, with Luka playing at this level, I think Luka would finally demand a trade and there would be a Luka sweepstakes this summer and the knicks would be in good position for that. I also think that Trae, Donovan, and Kawhi are also guys to keep an eye b/c I could also see frustrations growing either from them or the franchise if they have a disappointing post-season. They should even consider Zion tbh. For the upside alone. Ultimately, the Knicks currently have a dead-end roster with a 2nd round ceiling at best. Its nice for now to keep them relevant, but if a superstar player becomes available, they should pounce on that immediately. It's the only way they can legitimately contend, and they have good enough trade assets to get it done.

Fleeced? Not even close. We landed n ELITE defender, a legit 3 and D big wing, without trading a single one of our 1st rd picks. While also getting rid of RJ’s contract.. losing IQ stings but remember, he needs resigned in offszn and who knows, what if a team offers him 27-28 mil a year? We wouldn’t match that regardless…. It’s just one of those rare trades where it actually helps out both teams

These guys don't watch the Knicks so they won't know. It was a legit fair and balanced trade. Knicks needed a defensive wing and had too many guards. Raptors needed a point guard and had too many wings. RJ and Randle on the floor wasn't going to work. RJ got to go home and get more opportunities to score. IQ got the starting PG role he wanted. OG got to go to a team that can contend. Everyone won. No one was fleeced.

Mcant hit it on the head, Og is the wing stopper open shot maker the team needed, this trade was the Knicks doubling down on Brunson as an 1a player.. Barrett goes to Toronto and can be a primary/secondary playmaker, while Quickley gets into to swing of being a starting pg in the lg.. everyone can't be a superstar it's a 12-15 man rotation, sometimes Gil and Brandon really piss me off because they have played all the roles in the NBA. from the star to everything else.. can yall look at fit subjectively instead of always trying to add yall career into it.. yall made a great pivot into this space embrace it.. yall can really be great at this next phase...

You can't be fleeced on defense this what that trade was about I get what we lost but OG isn't a player that teams would pass up on. When you got a player that can guard move without the ball to score and shoot at a decent percentage how we got fleeced. Also achiuwa is a good defensive player and this is what we looking for. We also overlooking Flynn he's decent but only time will tell quick and RJ will be missed but they're gone so now we just go from there.

Here is my issue with this crazy take from NBA players. In regards to the Knicks when it sounds like people are talking like it's 2010. This is not what's happening. And for anybody thinking that this is the only move they're making is even worse. This is not the same team. They're building the smart way and because they're doing that piece by piece, people are apparently complaining out the ass. Can they close the gap with the top teams in the east? Absolutely. Gill talking about there hasn't been a leap in Julius Randle's game is even dumber of a take. Did this man not too long ago from not mistaken? Became an all-star was a most improved player I think. Maybe a season or two before that and carried the team to get them to the playoffs. Got injured in the playoffs this past year, multiple times once leading into the playoffs and was covering from an injury and then got injured again. You then fast forward to this season and he is playing his best basketball that he's honestly ever played.

Gil has to be all nba first team no f'in idea what he's talking about when it comes to the knicks lol. Julius scoring alone (PPG) isn't an indication of how well he's playing year by year. He has completely changed the way he plays this season which is better sustainable for playoffs (favours post scoring, rebounds instead of contested long distance jumpers), and he has no problem with Brunson being the leader of the team. The OG trade was a clear sign knicks will be building to complement Julius + Brunson. It's not the final trade, it's the trade before the final trade.

Gil is wrong about what frustrates us Knicks fans about Randle! First of all he had perhaps the worst performance of any Knick player in history against the Hawks in the first round two seasons ago. Then he had a bad playoff last season although he had an injury excuse. Lastly, Randle has exhibited anti-team behaviors, and we question his mental makeup. That's some fans like me wish they would trade his 24 pts, and 5 assists to some other team.

Knicks are in a better spot given the need to make another move. This is better for continuity than staying with the same roster. I love Barrett and Quickley, even more. But OG is a better fit.
