Introduction to Face To Face with Gilbert Harding, BBC4, 2007 - A part of the Hidden Lives season - I've not included the full programme as it's easily available on the BBC's website (and would be blocked).
Not my copyright (obviously), just sharing found ephemera.

This is a summary but would've been fascinated and moved to see the Face To Face interview. The introduction by the continuity announcer concerning something 'filmed months before homosexuality was at least partially decriminalised' is confusing. Obviously the programme here was in 2007. 1967 from what I understand is when decriminalisation became law. Gilbert Harding died in 1960. It should be clarified because the timeline of such things in parallel with behaviour, what could be known and what couldn't be known, is of historical and biographical significance. I'm not a homosexual myself but it interests and perplexes me to read or hear of how certain men I admired struggled prior to political changes....being a Beatle fan, Brian Epstein comes to mind but also various comedians and actors who battled to suppress the truth while being in the public eye. Anyway, regardless of that, the point is....what is this announcer on about?

It was an exercise in cruelty on John Freeman’s part and he was lucky Harding didn’t belt him. The unintended consequence of Britain’s paranoia towards male homosexuality in the post-war era was that it forced closeted men up into the arts and broadcasting for air, where they became only more visible: Benjamin Britten, Francis Bacon, Keith Vaughan, Somerset Maugham, Terrence Rattigan, Noel Coward, Daniel Farson, Larry Parnes, Frankie Howard, Kenneth Williams, and, of course, Harding amongst many others. The fact that every attempt to suppress any aspect of the human condition only results in it re-emerging even more prominently was clearly irksome to someone like Freeman, who just wanted cheap tears at GH’s expense.
