It was a bit over orchestrated. The strings section was a bit too loud and overpowering and it would have been nice to hear more of him and the piano. He was quite big here in the UK when I was a teenager but yes it was a brilliantly written song.

It is hard to describe what it was like to be a youngster, and hearing such treasures like this almost every week from our radios. We had Charles Aznavour, Paul McCartney, Neil Diamond, Gordon Lightfoot..With so many new song gems. At a time when the Biafra war was on, and emaciated children were on our screens...To hear song like this, was cathartic for many of my generation. The more I studied Ray's (Gilbert's) work, the more I learned what real talent looks like. Thank you for uploading this beauty .

Always treasured this composition.....one day I was playing my guitar and had a capo on at the third fret.....for whatever reason.....I struck an Am7 chord and thought, "that's the opening chord to "Nothing Rhymed" and proceeded to work out the rest of the composition .....beautiful chords but, equally such a superb lyric too. His finest....a word of praise for the string arrangement too, by Johnnie Spence as I recall....and just checked, the late Herbie Flowers on bass.

After listening Gilbert's original, I'm coming away with a darker mood and certainly the lyrics are haunting. Burton Cummings covered this on his 1976 solo album because he loved the lyrics and melody, but for some reason didn't sing all of Gilbert's lyrics. Give it a listen. @Phil UK Net: I'm from 58, so a bit younger. But I'll never forget the day of it's first showing on Dutch tv. Life no less. Guilbert in his Irish Povery togs behind the piano. It was so contradictive of anything we were used to when it came to pop music. And the lyrics! Let me say this it's endearing and aware making at the same time. A short while after came Matrimony and then it got silent up into the eighties. And then a reborn, modern Guilbert O'Sullivan came back on the stage. But nowhere as powerful and beguiling as that poverty boy.

Going to see Gilbert in Cork next Wednesday - pure genius and definitely not under appreciated. Any artist who spent seven weeks at no.1 in the States with "Alone again" has hardly not got recognition. He was a global star in the '70s. Unfortunately he had a long running legal battle with his first manager Gordon Mills to regain the royaltys from his original songs. This precluded him from releasing new material for years. Thankfully he won his case so now he has so many more beautiful songs out there. Gilbert is appearing in his native Waterford in Ireland shortly before Christmas. His concerts were sold out in seconds so I'm delighted I'm going to get to see him in Cork. Thanksfor everything Raymond from a fellow Deise lad.

10 times the talent of Elton, I wish he were not scammed by his label and had made/published music throughout that period passionately, a great loss. now there is a before and after in the music and enthusiasm. Still a huge contribution to the world of music, I hope my kids' 5 generations from now will enjoy this as much as I do,

I think the very young Elton John was so much better a songwriter than he is now! Living in the US seems to have made his songs overblown and not stripped back sadly!
@bobsmodelrailways

I agree. I was at Music College in the early 70s when these songs burst onto the scene. Gilbert & Elton were deemed “rubbish” by my tutors as their music (like the Beatles before them) didn’t conform to musical theory. I could have actually written thousands of songs like these, and better, but wasn’t allowed to. Frustrated at this I left College to find my own way but thereby hangs another tale......... anyway these “musicians” were still scorned by the tutors and, in a way, they were right. We had to literally “write” parts, as in 26 instrument scores and voice, four part harmony and piano pieces all of which had to conform to the theory of music whereas Gilbert & Elton went on to make their millions (although Gilbert was ripped off by his manager, and struggled forever thereafter), and Elton triumphed above all the “writers” you can ever imagine. If I had been a “chord merchant” like EJ then I would’ve been thrown out of College. The only true musician on the scene at the time in this genre for the UK was Peter Skellern. But because of the route he chose he never got the exposure he deserved. He died penniless.

Grenville Bamford - Bernie Taupin does not write / compose music. Elton John does. Up until now I've never heard (or read) anyone say otherwise, or even hint otherwise. Feel free to share links with interviews or posts (reliable sources, obviously). In the good old days he, as Reg (sometimes Reggie) Dwight - his real name is Reginald Kenneth Dwight), wrote the music and lyrics to "Come Back Baby" and "Mr. Frantic" when he was with Bluesology

An excellently written song of that time seen through the eyes of one of the most underrated talents.

Oh man, I've seen Gilbert 6 times in concert between 1997 and 2014 but I sadly didn't catch any of his low key intimate solo shoes with just piano and guitar in the last five years. Gilbert is coming to Oslo, Norway in October 2021 and Hopefully the corona madness will be over by then but Im not sure. He's my all time favourite pop artist. Having been born in 1980 I obviously didn't catch Gilberts Golden Days in the commercial spotlight in the 70s buy was introduced to his music by my father.
