It was so contradictive of anything we were used to when it came to pop music. And the lyrics! Let me say this it's endearing and aware making at the same time. A short while after came Matrimony and then it got silent up into the eighties. And then a reborn, modern Guilbert O'Sullivan came back on the stage. Going to see Gilbert in Cork next Wednesday - pure genius and definitely not under appreciated. Any artist who spent seven weeks at no.1 in the States with "Alone again" has hardly not got recognition. He was a global star in the '70s. Unfortunately he had a long running legal battle with his first manager Gordon Mills to regain the royaltys from his original songs. This precluded him from releasing new material for years. Thankfully he won his case so now he has so many more beautiful songs out there. Gilbert is appearing in his native Waterford in Ireland shortly before Christmas. His concerts were sold out in seconds so I'm delighted I'm going to get to see him in Cork. Thanksfor everything Raymond from a fellow Deise lad.

@bobsmodelrailways3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I was at Music College in the early 70s when these songs burst onto the scene. Gilbert & Elton were deemed “rubbish” by my tutors as their music (like the Beatles before them) didn’t conform to musical theory. I could have actually written thousands of songs like these, and better, but wasn’t allowed to. Frustrated at this I left College to find my own way but thereby hangs another tale......... anyway these “musicians” were still scorned by the tutors and, in a way, they were right. We had to literally “write” parts, as in 26 instrument scores and voice, four part harmony and piano pieces all of which had to conform to the theory of music whereas Gilbert & Elton went on to make their millions (although Gilbert was ripped off by his manager, and struggled forever thereafter), and Elton triumphed above all the “writers” you can ever imagine. If I had been a “chord merchant” like EJ then I would’ve been thrown out of College. The only true musician on the scene at the time in this genre for the UK was Peter Skellern. But because of the route he chose he never got the exposure he deserved. He died penniless.

I saw Gilbert in 2019 at a little theatre in Babacombe near Torquay, it was just him and a guitarist. He was brilliant, still as crisp as ever. When this hell is over and we hopefully return to some sort of normality, I would really recommend seeing him, you won’t be disappointed.😊👍
@thomasmarthinussen89783 жыл бұрын
Oh man, I've seen Gilbert 6 times in concert between 1997 and 2014 but I sadly didn't catch any of his low key intimate solo shoes with just piano and guitar in the last five years. Gilbert is coming to Oslo, Norway in October 2021 and Hopefully the corona madness will be over by then but Im not sure. He's my all time favourite pop artist. Having been born in 1980 I obviously didn't catch Gilberts Golden Days in the commercial spotlight in the 70s buy was introduced to his music by my father.

Just genuinely a most beautiful song, a time when musicians were songwriters, sadly lacking in today's limped so called pop stars.
@Vanilla.coke12343 жыл бұрын
"so called"? They ARE pop stars and that's the problem. The music industry went the same route model games are gone. They make easily digestible, addictive, crap. There's still real musicians out there but they're not the ones that get radio time

When I hear Alone Again or Claire, it immediately takes me back to where i first heard those songs while a year's stay in Paris, as if it were yesterday. Funny enough I loved GOS because of this very song, I was 20 at that time, but he was seen by young people as a bit of an oddball, but I saw through that image and just loved his music, and now at the tender age of 71 myself I still enjoy listening to his music, this one is my all-time favourite though, the music is amazing with brilliant lyrics, which was a little out of step during that glam rock period !
