We have this and I do agree with the Orion comments, however, we were looking for no heat but very realistic flame. Personally, the heat feature is annoyingly loud - and we knew this in advance from another honest reviewer - but we didnt really care to use it. We are in the northeast and needed much more substantial heat. We purchased mini splits but still wanted ambience in our very rustic family room. This unit is amazing! I have zero regrets. It’s beautiful!! Awesome speed and flame settings. Crystals and decent sized logs and that reflective background truly has the flame placement perfected. The price point is lower than the Orion but higher than many. We wanted something to last. Dimplex was industry leading. The advice from this gentleman reviewing this model is spot on. I actually took a huge risk buying this on eBay and am so so SO glad I did. ❤

Do u need 220 volts for more heat? Or it doesn’t matter if it’s 110 or 220? It gets very cold in winters where we live so we want more heat but we don’t have 220 volts connection

I'm very interested in the Dimplex Bold. If one was to build a surround similar to this, is the fireplace permanently mounted and unable to be removed for maintenance unless the whole surround is ripped apart?

Service is conducted by removing the front piece of glass and the glass media. The front glass piece is secured with brackets held in by a couple of screws and once these brackets are removed the glass comes off and everything can be accessed in the front of the fireplace without the need to remove or uninstall.

When the heating is off and it just set to flame display is it normal for a small noise to be running in the background on the XL 50

Yes, you could be hearing the rod that is rotating to display the flame. If it becomes noticeably louder then this can be serviced.

Yes, it has the option to use with our without the heat! when connected to 120V it puts out about 5,000 BTU and when connected to a 240V it puts out around 8,000 BTU.

No crackling sounds on this model. You can find that on the Dimplex Opti-V units and the Modern Flames Orion series!

Maybe it's me, but the flames seem oddly wide and not very smooth/soft in how they "pop."

As with anything, it's definitely something you need to see in person. Sometimes the shutter speed on the camera can alter the look of the flame.

@@GilbertFireplacesBBQs I hope so; otherwise, the flame seems to be combined with popping bubbles though I'll look for a live display before purchasing an LED fireplace to get a better idea.
