I assume that, rather than people suddenly starting to love him, Gilgamesh learned of the common people's hardships and worries, which in turn made him realize what tyrant he had been. Also, if your best friend opposes the idea of Prima Noctis, you don't want to anger him by keeping that practice. I mean, sometimes it's just enough to know what kind of an asshole you are to completely change your view on things.

@Nathan Larochelle Not really a comic, Fate/stay night is a famous visual novels with 3 different parallel scenarios that were more or less adapted in animes and later mangas. With Fate/zero (books then anime) and Fate/hollow ataraxia (visual novel only) you have the full story. The dialogue above was invented afaik but it's a reference to how Gilgamesh calls everyone he has contempt for (=everyone at all) a mongrel.

Gilgamesh is not that underrated. Just that most people never pay attention to anything dealing with Mythology these days. As it is uncool and in some books speaks of heresy. When most Mythologies are really life lessons and stories to help people understand the world around them. Yet because we have such vast technology at our fingertips. People feel that Mythologies are no longer needed. Oh, how wrong they are. Plus Gilgamesh is a fucking awesome person and a story that spans every fabric of life. From Friendship (we saw here) to worrying about mortality. Also, someone has to hit on Saber every five seconds...oh wait. Wrong Gilgamesh...-coughs-

Poor high-priestess, talk about taking one for the team. I also love dude-bro Gilgamesh.
@sophiatalksmusic35885 жыл бұрын
I believe that Shamhat was a priestess for Ishtar, the Mesopotamian goddess of love, sex, and war. The translation of Gilgamesh I read referred to her as a "prostitute," but she wasn't seen as "sleazy" or "cheap" since she was a priestess. Rather, it was the job of priestesses of that particular culture to channel divine power from Ishtar through sex. Definitely not the same stigma today, though!
@IONATVS5 жыл бұрын
In mesopotamia, most priestesses were also expected to be prostitutes as part of religious duties, both as an emulation of Ishtar, who was an extremely horny goddess, and as a quick and easy way to fill the temple treasury. So Gilgamesh paying her to “civilize” Enkidu wasn’t that far outside her normal duties, other than in quantity...

There was also, referenced within that text mind you, that everybody she slept with was essentially cursed. Granted scorning a goddess ends about as badly, but I really doubt literature had reached the point of dissembling on motive quite yet. That said, the specific attitude about dudes entering into various sexual relationships is as far as I know undefined for that culture. It could have been an expected part of masculine friendship unworthy of comment or completely unthinkable. We don't have that information. Read the work for what it is, not what you would have it be.
@Cythil5 жыл бұрын
It is more correct to say the oldest surviving text in this case. The stories where likely passed down orally first and later written down several times with variations. These variations may be local variations of the story or simply that the story changed with time. Like so many times before they need to pick some version of he story (or make some amalgamation of the stories) just to present it in a short, easy to understand format. See it more as a introduction to the myths. The bring up this a lot when they go in to Irish mythology which we have very spotty records off with many different versions. ;)

arnold jayeola That would actually mean 3/4 god and 1/4 man instead. It stem from the fact that aincient Sumerian believe in the concept that multiple male could impreg one female, (with god at least) to birth something of 2/3 god and 1/3 man.

I read this story recently for university and always read their relationship as more than just a friendly bond.
