"Satsui (殺意)", 1992.
Gilles de Rais formed in 1989. In April of 1990, the group released their only demo, "Une de Mes Folies", which sold rather impressively in the visual underground. That October, Gilles de Rais released their first mini-album, "Damned Pictures", which proved to be a hit in the emerging visual circuit. Gilles de Rais continued to tour throughout most of 1991 to a huge following, and, in late 1991, the group signed to Extasy Records, a label founded by visual kei mogul Yoshiki. In January of 1992, Gilles de Rais released their first full length album, "Satsu (殺意)", which was a huge hit among the visual audience. In October of 1992 and January of 1993, Gilles de Rais released their second mini-album and first single, both of which were entitled "Because". Both the single and the album were huge hits in the visual circuit, and, apparently, major labels were starting to pay attention to the popularity of Gilles de Rais. Shortly after the release of "Because", the group signed to the major label, Pony Canyon. In June of 1993, Gilles de Rais made their major debut by releasing their second full length album, which was self-titled. The album was a modest success, reaching number 25 on the Oricon charts, and staying in the charts for three weeks. In November of 1993, Gilles de Rais released their third mini-album, "Japan", which sold less well than their self-titled album, as it only reached number 41 on the Oricon charts, and stayed in the charts for two weeks. In October of 1994, Gilles de Rais released their third full length album, "Crack a Boy", which was their lowest-selling album to date, as it only reached 68 on the Oricon, and only stayed in the charts for one week. By mid-1995, Gilles de Rais decreased their visual aesthetics heavily, and, in June of 1995, released their second single, "Shion no Hana ga Saku Oka de (シオンの花が咲く丘で)", which only reached number 83, and stayed in the charts for only a week. Gilles de Rais then disbanded a month or two after the single's release. Frontman Joe went on to form the cult underground visual group, Jesus Believe Me, in late 1996. He used his full name of Yoshiyuki Ichimaya (一宮良之) while fronting the group. While the group garnered much critical success in the visual underground, Jesus Believe Me ended up splitting in early 1999. Immediately after the group's disbandment, Ichimaya went on to join R.O.M (Revenge of Mongoloid). The group failed to take off like Gilles de Rais or Jesus Believe Me, and R.O.M also eventually split by 2002. After the disbandment of R.O.M, Ichimaya appeared to have finally retired from the visual scene. The drummer of Gilles de Rais, Sinn, went on to join the successful visual group, HYPERM∀NIA (later known as RAMAR). When the group changed its alias to RAMAR, Sinn went by his full name of Shinya Fukuda (福田真也). In 2006, RAMAR went on a hiatus, and Fukuda then went on to join the indies group, F.O.D. However, when RAMAR returned in 2011, Fukuda was not a member of the group. It is assumed that he retired from the visual scene after the disintegration of F.O.D. The guitarist and bassist of Gilles de Rais, Jack and Dee, both went on to join the short lived visual group, Acid Bell, in early 1996. While a member of Acid Bell, bassist Dee changed his alias to DXX. Acid Bell only released one album, "Speak?", in October of 1996, before disbanding by late 1997. After Acid Bell's split, Jack disappeared from the visual underground, while DXX joined two more obscure indies bands: Hybrid Buzz and The Cray Fish Five. Both groups eventually disbanded, and DXX also retired from the visual scene. Recently, Jack resurfaced to the Japanese underground music scene as one-half of the rock duo, AshRoses. The group have a slight visual appearance to them, although not nearly to the degree of Gilles de Rais and Acid Bell. Jack's group, AshRoses, still remain active today.
