Villeneuve was the fastest & best driver of his era, who would have been world champion, had he lived.

I dont think he would be WC, because he was driving with heart and talent not with his brain. You need more than talent to be the best.

@Flame Resistant Troll dear Friend, there are many disciplines without world championship: arts, movies, literature..... f1 WC is even unable to define really a champion, because every driver has a CAR, and the value of his car is always important. So.....I like to say that Gilles was an artist: artistic his way to drive, to think, to live ....regards, dear FLaMe

He was the most exciting driver I had ever seen. He was fearless but incredibly talented, he was especially in his own league on wet pavement.

When you compare a sportsman, a team with others by numbers, you always obtain two kinds of results: 1) number of victories/championships grows up when time passes: Senna has less victories than Schumacher; Schumacher has less victories than a.s.o. This is why F1 changes, has more and more races every years, for example 2) Number of victories does not grow up when time passes. A few number of sports changed strongly: Motogp in '60 & '70 allowed to race in more than a championship (250cc, 350cc a.s.o.), so Agostini won a lot of Gp and WC. Nowadays, it's not possible, and this is such a serious obstacle for Rossi, Marquez and others. Gilles is not famous for number of victories, but for his special way to drive: this is the reason why he cannot be overtaken

This footage (not the music thou) was taken from the Video 'Formula Villeneuve'. The great man Enzo Ferrari signed Gilles after seeing him drive on his F1 debut for McLaren at Silverstone 1979, and the rest is history. What the Commendatory loved the most about Villeneuve, was the fact that Gilles could drive his cars 'beyond' the limit to the point where it would be mechanically destroyed, because this would tell Enzo that he had to make his cars stronger. Gilles talents are legendary and to this day, NO ONE could get close to how he drove cars that were 'inferior' to the Turbos of the era let alone the other normally aspirated cars on the grid. Watching Gilles and Arnoux at Dijon 1979 showed how much 'respect' drivers had for each other when going side by side around a corner and taking the fight to the next corner. Gilles is not just Ferrari's greatest ever driver, but the greatest (certainly of HIS time) if not of all time. I miss him so much.
