You never mentioned the height at which the box needs to be placed above the ground. I thought I heard that it needs to be up pretty high but what is the optimal height to install the box? Thanks and great video.
@gilligallouАй бұрын
hi there, sorry about that. The thing is each installation is different based on the terrane, habitat etc, that said I aim for 15-20 ft in the air, facing south, south east. all the best. Thanks for watching, Bob

Very interesting, so would you say the nest period applies to southern America

Totally different I would guess, would have to research that. Different climate, and more there.

What type of wood do you use? If using plywood, what type?
@gilligallou3 жыл бұрын
All reclaimed wood from old turn of the century barns, mostly Hemlock, some red pine and eastern white cedar.

Could uou explain the mesh thing to help the young owls ?
@gilligallou9 ай бұрын
We provide a very tight mesh on the inside of the box to allow young birds to climb up to exit the box as the grown and practice flapping their wings.

I may have spotted owls nearby, and they need a boost in population. Maybe they will accept the same kind of box as barred owl?
@mols767 Жыл бұрын
Have made a barred owl nest box to these specs. Just wondering about the mesh. What do you use? Is it a risk that the baby owls could get their claws stuck in there? Thanks for your great info.
@gilligallou Жыл бұрын
we use what's called carpenters cloth. it is securely fastened. Owlets are big enough that their claws are strong, we haven't had any problems, enjoy, thanks, Bob

Hey, I could use some help, the house behind me and much of the vegetation is going to be demolished so they can build a new house. I have an eastern screech owl living in one of the trees. I have bought a new box specifically for that species. My question is will they choose a better location if one is available? Is there a way to coax it to choose the new box? I am guessing it will be higher than the current nest. He/she has been hanging around for over a year but I don't know exactly where the nest is. Any thoughts would be helpful Thanks John
@gilligallou2 жыл бұрын
hi john, the nest must be close by, how with the loss of habitat and construction they may move on, Hard to say, best bet is to offer them a nesting site like you have done. Hopefully it works out, keep me posted., thanks , Bob
