You may not know this, but John Hoyt, who played him, also played Beverley Carlton in the first stage production of The Man Who Came to Dinner. Both characters are very similar.

Dan Hanna they wrote him off after he got married. It was as if the Chief was grandpa and grandmas only child.

Not sure why Grandpa would be totally broke. Wouldn’t he have the proceeds from the sale of his house? Or wouldn’t he at least get social security?
