Rini was unhealthy and Ricky knows that. Ricky only clung to Nini because he hated change and wanted to stay in the past, that was shown the whole of season 2. He’s accepted change now The whole idea of Gina not being Ricky’s first love means she’s a secondary choice that can easily be replaced by Nini is really dumb. It’s a lazy excuse to use to say Rina isn’t a good ship

ej and gina were paired off bc they were the only single characters left and bc they were both very lonely. gina was dealing with being away from her mom and feeling like she EHS wasn't home ( plus everything with ricky) and ej was having a hard time dealing with expectations from his parents and what he wants to do next. gina never got over ricky and ej was running away from his future, things that are going to come back in the third season and will probably lead to an (inevitable if you ask me) breakup.
