Oh thank you Pat. You can never have too many presser feet. The #57 is still an excellent choice but if you have dual feed on your machine you will love the D presser feet and the results they give. Thank you for watching.

@@springtime335 If you live around Knoxville Tn. you can get one at Gina's Bernina, I know she has them as I was there this afternoon. If you don't live around here find your local fabric shop and they should have them. The Stitchery in Rome GA also has them. Support your local folks if possible, but if no one has them close you might try Amazon. They really do work well, I bought two :)

Your comment about your Mother having a broken needle removed from her finger reminded me of a story my Mom often told. She was a little girl in the mid-1920s and desperately wanted to sew. They had a Wheeler-Wilson treadle machine and her Mother forbid her to use it for fear she would hurt herself. My Mom said any time her Mother went outside to do chores she would go to machine. On more than one occasion she pierced her finger with the needle; because shouldn’t have been using the machine, she didn’t dare call her Mother, so had to remove the needle herself.

A stilletto is a must have. Improve your safety, accuracy and reduce trips to the hospital. (I still remember my mother having had to have a broken needle removed from her finger. I have an old Geist set for my 1946 Kenmore, and it has a precision machined stiletto that has a hook to loop your index finger through. I sometimes use the double forked side of my Apliquick tool. Just as you demonstrate, the #37 is perfect for knowing where to start and stop on inset seams. Use these marks and save time (you don't have to mark every #!$^@$%&^&& spot) and improve accuracy for stopping and backstitching.I also have the #57 gated foot which I love but does not give the best visibility for the 1/4 markings on the start when you need to see the right edge (e.g. in sewing at a diamond shoulder or hexagon. These seam guides are so much better than the "workarounds" that many suggest. Nothing works better than these. They came with my 910, and I use them there and on my 530. Why screw around with moleskins, post it notes and all that other "stuff". Get a precision seam guide AND get the gated foot. You won't need the seam guide. The straight stitch plate on my 530 is terrific pairing with these feet. I can also get *full* clearance (others may have different results and should test and observer carefully) with 1 click to the right for the perfect scant 1/4". There are no substitutes for the quality that you get with Bernina feet.

I appreciate this video. I recently purchased the 97D but am unhappy with it for two reasons: 1. The seam guide extends out too far making it impossible to sew the curve of a circle. 2. When not using the seam guide, it is difficult to sew with the fabric perfectly aligned with the right edge of the foot because it is not straight from front to the back. Should I buy foot 57d and return 97? I do have a 9mm machine (880 plus)? Any tips on sewing perfect 1/4" seam with circles and this foot?

I use the 10D on small quilted items but for larger quilts I use the walking foot. The walking foot now comes with 3 different soles included one of which is the equivalent to presser foot 10. Hope that helps.

I have a question. At about 5:58 in the video, you mentioned that you were sliding the “needle thread” thru the throat plate. Is that actually the “bobbin thread” that needs to be threaded thru the throat plate??? Thank you so much 😊

Gina, I have moved recently and no longer have a bernina shop. This is great that I can get instructions. I had just purchased a gathering foot and couldn’t make it work. Now instead of traveling 50 miles to see the bernina lady who is only available on thursdays I can watch you. I now know that I need the smaller 37 to gather on my 140 patchwork machine. I did get the bigger one to work but only on thin fabric. Do you think the smaller foot would work better for my 5.5 c. Feed dogs ? Maybe I just need a new machine😀. I’ll be watching for a reply. Hi and thank you for watching. This is Kathy Drew and I will be glad to help you. I am a little confused as in your comment you state that you used #37 to gather. Since 37 is not a gathering foot, I just wanted to be sure of what you are asking. Now, if you are talking about piecing, on the 140 machine, the 5.5mm #37 foot should work perfectly. You probably found that the larger one did not match your feed dogs and therefore gave you some difficulty in the feeding of the fabric. Stick with the 5.5 millimeter feet for your machine. Hope that helps and please let me know what you mean about the 37 to gather.

After changing the presser foot on the machine, I tried changing the presser foot setting on the screen so that it reflects the presser foot number I just changed it to. Is the presser foot number suppose to change in the settings when I select it? Thank you...

What Model of Bernina are you sewing on? Not all of the models will change the number on the screen.

The 475 has maximum 5.5 stitch width capability so selecting the presser foot is not required as it is on those machines that have a maximum 9 capability and we need the security to protect against the needle hitting the foot when we use a foot with a 5.5 millimeter opening. I hope that makes sense.

The may be a stupid question but I noticed with the 97D and seam guide you didn’t use any pins. Does the 97D/seam guide set up/combo eliminate the need for pins?

As far as I’m concerned there are no stupid questions. It depends on the situation. In a demo we are working on smaller pieces where with larger items or some precision piecing pins may be necessary. You will find however that the dual feed does make it possible to use less pins or none at all. If you do need to pin and don’t want to the hassle of stopping and removing the pins before reaching the guide, try pinning vertically beside the seam. I also have used a small amount of fabric glue at intersecting seams as well keeping the glue within the seam allowance. Hope that helps.

Hi great video. I have the 790SE and the 480, I have the 97 D for the 790, can I use the 97 D on the 480, or should I purchase a 97 for the 480. The 480 doesn’t have the drop down fro the D.

Hi Jean. The D feet are made specifically to allow for the dual feed mechanism to engage in the back of the foot. If you notice a portion of the foot has a section removed to allow for that. In my experience, using the foot without the dual feed engaged will result in puckering of the seam. Hope that helps.
