This shows Ginger's talent for being a mimic and putting over various chacterizations.

Is that wise cracking blonde Una Merkel??? I like how Ginger says "Oh, dear" while taking ANOTHER monacle out of her pocket and looking up with mock sophistication. Genius--and sooo funny. You can see why she became a star. Great movie--see it everybody. A classic.

rogers has some great lines in this film, my favourite is during the fight scene, she says "this ain't no place for anyone who's insurance ain't paid up". I've been waiting for the perfect opportunity to use that one.

Ok, we can't get more American musical than this--'42nd St.' --all the fun cliches--the kid becoming a star, the up tight producers, the drama, the sidekick, great songs--what more do you want????

Ginger and Una are THE best part of that movie. It's too bad they were just supporting players. They provide all the sass and funny moments throughout the film!

+Chris “retrogurlaz” Mc ginger's talent was a deep well. she became a great star with fred astaire but needed only herself all along. she did it all and amazed audiences for decades with her comedy, drama, singing and dancing. she was a powerhouse and excelled at everything. audiences knew it right away and loved her in it all. her stardom dwarfs broadway babes like ruby keekel(ugh). Ginger had more style and nuance than any "broadway baby." she was class, overflowing with talent and beauty. fred astarie never had it so good, being only a great dancer and mediocre at the rest. the man was repetitious to the point of insanity. not until he got too old to dance did his acting emerge. his performance in On the Beach was first rate and he damn near stole the picture from the likes of greg Peck, tony Perkins, ava gardner.

Loraine: You remember Anne Lowell? Andy Lee: Not Anytime Annie? Say, who could forget 'er? She only said "No" once, and THEN she didn't hear the question!

Yes, you probably got all the info you need but..It's an audition sequence, notable because it's happening during the depression and there is very little work so naturally EVERYBODY shows up for the audition. This scene sets up the chaos, the hardness of everything behind the scenes. The director is considered a 'has been'. He has heart trouble. This production is his last opportunity for a come back.

I wanted to dress up as "Anytime Annie" the Halloween I was 15, but alas, I couldn't find clothes like the character's...
