In this online game I pick a longer time limit, 15+10, my aim is to really explain the thought processes behind the moves that I am playing.
Hopefully this will help you understand better the way I think, and the way Grandmasters approach the game.

Simon, though it's natural for your to be pissed off about a loss, particularly a suspicious loss, you should never worry about the result in these videos. They will be great for us regardless of the result. The commentary is what is important, the helpful hints about strategy and tactics, the discussion of openings, the thought process. All of that is great! Don't worry one bit.

He felt humiliated after losing to you with such an opening, rationalizing that only a cheater could accomplish such and then turned on his engine. His play style and tempo changed drastically as soon as he realized he was losing the rook no matter what.
@GreenTornado
@GreenTornado 7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Connolly This just proves how unbeatable engines are. You can be down a rook against a GM, and the engine can turn the tables in just a few moves. It's incredible.

It is amazing. Androids (future us) will be chess gods. The calculation ability mixed with human strategic conceptualization. Although sometimes this is a weakness, would Simon have blundered if he didn't FEEL comfortable with his position?
@GreenTornado
@GreenTornado 7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Connolly I don't know. Blunders can happen at any time. One of the main reasons he blundered was, as he said himself, that he moved a bit too fast at that moment. It doesn't help when he is explaining himself for us, too. I personally believe he confused himself with all the explaining and calculating he did, thereby making him miss that tactic with the undefended queen. What is your view on this? Do you agree with what I have just said?
@BuddhistProdigy
@BuddhistProdigy 7 жыл бұрын
Patrick Connolly t Totally agree except I think he was using the engine in the opening too. A couple of times Simon knows there is only one good reply to a move he just made and this patzer finds it in seconds.
@pc6663
@pc6663 7 жыл бұрын
PrzedSem. I do agree on second watch, the combination of accurate moves with the loss of time and decentralization of the queen taking the rook in the corner made for some uncomfortable counterplay. So Simon probably didn't feel too comfortable.

Ran the game through lichess's analysis board. Small wonder that after 12.Qxh8 he played the engine's first move except for one or two moves, where pretty much any move kept the advantage. Also, his tactics, blitz and bullet ratings are CRAP. So, don't take this to heart, Simon. Keep on keepin' on!

I've been called a cheater by a lot of people. It's a go-to reaction of many people to accuse their opponent of cheating when they get crushed. So we shouldn't put too much stock in some comment on his profile. His very low blitz, bullet and tactics ratings though - that's another matter! Nobody plays like this in standard and at 1000-ish level in bullet. I'm pretty confident this guy was getting computer-assistence.

I am very weak in blitz, I just can't think in 3-5 mins timeframe. I am way better in classical 10-15 minutes games. I think, especially for older people like me, it is quite normal. However, in longer games, you need to trust your opponent much more :)

Not at all, I'm at ~1900 in online rapid and after going over my games I often get centipawn losses around 20 and sometimes lower. What is suspicious is not this, it is the speed and accuracy that the opponent played material up in a still unclear position, against a GM no less! I dont know about you, but If I were a queen up against simon williams with 13 bloody minutes left, I would damn well use the 13 minutes.

Dear GM Simon Williams, apart from his last move, Bh3, your opponent was following Stockfish 8's top 1-2 suggestions. I can not say with certainty that he cheated, but it is likely that he did (chess.com blocked his account). Also, his "allegation" that you were using a computer says that he probably had an engine running next to him and your moves were matching his engine's (which they did!). Well, we know that you were following your own suggestions from the "Killer d4" DVDs. But even if we follow Stockfish 8's top suggestions for Black, before you blunder with 0-0, you had a very sound advantage of +1.00 to +2.00! This means that, if you played correctly, you would have (very likely) come out with a much better, if not winning, position. And this to me says a lot about the quality of your suggestions in the "Killer d4" DVDs. I bought the DVDs from your website and, so far, I thoroughly enjoy your lessons there! Best wishes and I look forward to your next video in this time format!

I saw the tactic 2 moves before and I am an amateur player (really I thought you were going to put the R in d1 before castling), but the thing is that you are explaining and calculating at same time, it is completely logic that you will miss something, mainly in a tactic game! It's a very obvious move and a 2000 elo player will easily spot it with his back to the wall - you focus on those cheap shots when they're your only way out. What really makes him suspicious is the speed with which he continued. When you have a material advantage against a GM, you simply don't blitz out the moves with 13 minutes on the clock.
@fertedin
@fertedin 7 жыл бұрын
I was saying just that is normal Simon to miss some tactic when he is explaining everything to us. Really, I don't know how he does to not miss more things in the middle game. About the another player: I agree that he was moving too fast with a lot of time in his clock after he took Q, taking an unnecessary risk to miss anything with a much better position and he didn't play very well the opening so it is .weirder too.

Someone should run this game through Lichess's analysis board engine thingy. See if his rude opponent was having help. Even I'm quite suspicious about his play. Most of his moves were played so quickly (hence he still had over 13 minutes at the end of the game), even in the more tactical/critical moments. Yes, there is a very good chance that he got lucky (despite Simon blundering) and is actually a lot stronger than a rating of 1976, but it wouldn't hurt to run it through an engine.

The tactic that won your queen is not expected to be realized by some 1 who is 1000 rated (as he is in blitz where its difficult to use a computer). But sometimes its possible that average players do spot such tactics. That can be ignored as luck. But the fact that he played so accurately for the rest of the game is extremely suspicious. You may argue that blitz and longer game ratings can be different, but they cant be so far apart. Extremely suspicious guy. But enjoyed the video. Please keep doing more of these. if finding opponents (or fair opponents) is a problem, please try to arrange a rivals match in this time control. It will be so much fun ! From move 8 to the end (except move 20 and move 31) he played the #1 computer move. Not just "excellent" or "good" moves or whatever, but the EXACT #1 stockfish move. And he did it quickly. I agree that 1 game is not enough to prove cheating, but the odds that he found all those moves and has such a poor blitz rating are astronomically low.

Cheating on chess.com is rampant. I closed my account recently for the same reason. I have seen people play like 1000 rated players to then turn into super gms. At other times I have seen them mix their own moves with computer moves. Chess.com is infested with cheaters. I closed my account there because I got tired of dealing with cheaters. Lichess is far better in my opinion and they deal with cheaters swiftly unlike chess.com. I plan on opening a chess24 account soon as I imagine they do a much better job dealing with cheaters than sites like chess.com.

love the longer games simon (even when you lose) . It was very suspicious play from your opponent but either way whether he cheated or not don't let it get you down and please keep the videos coming

He has gotta be so angry that he would turn on the computer himself and be a swindler. Good job! I think he is feeling better now...

Good job Ginger. Thanks so much for posting this. must be hard to comment and play at the same time. Please use more arrows as you study the variations. I'm a newbie so keeping up with square names is still hard. Loved the tactics! keep up the good job. everyone looses, even Bobby Fisher lost some ;).

This guy played with John Bartholomew a few times as well. I think he lost all games. His rating is a little higher now, but he didn't strike me as a cheater back then. I think he's just good enough to spot a blunder and win the game of it.

Love the way you explain with this time control. Keep it coming! Question though, after Qxg7, doesn't Qg5 defends against capturing his rook?

This series is great, keep it going! Actually kind of nice to see that even a GM can blunder. Too bad it was against such a cheeky bugger

It's nice to see that GM's are human after all! I know that cheating is a big problem with on-line chess, but [ and I'm sorry to rub salt into the wound], even as a lowly 1340 player, I could see that your UNDEFENDED queen on e2 was ripe for a tactic [ I watch a lot of John Bartholomew's videos!] and, of course, you are commentating as well. Still, thank you for doing your bit to help us lesser mortals improve our game.

Simon's opponent was failing tactic puzzle's rated ~600 on chess dot com just a couple of months ago. There's no way he's not playing rapid games with engine assistance.
