Four years later, and Evermore has now closed permanently. When I made this video, I had no idea that what seemed like a plucky little fantasy park would end up being such a chaotic, wildly mismanaged disaster! If this video is your introduction to Evermore, I highly recommend checking out Jenny Nicholson's deep dive (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gmqymYd4asp1p7M) and then this video about the park closing (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKnQd42VatJ1rsk). Actor for Faldo(r) here, thanks for giving our work so much love ;u; This is such an untapped medium and it’s been both a joy and a stress to navigate it and figure it out alongside my colleagues, and I ESPECIALLY get excited about support from those familiar with existing collaborative storytelling mediums like y’all. Our cast is full of actors passionate about character building, and oftentimes half of them are DMs. Our budget is a far cry from Disneyland but we are a bunch of nerds with the power of love and passion for the art! Live in Layton Utah and go to the park every weekend. Can confirm there is no end to the surprises, mysteries and story lines in this place. The rabbit hole is endless and once you create trust and bonds with the characters layer and layers begin to open up. It’s probably the most amazing theme park I’ve experienced and my whole family is obsessed. They are crazy under priced right now but are trying to get people to the park. Marketing has been poor. Hoping people will come and support the myriad of artists and amazing talented people that make this place so special so we can enjoy it for many years.

As a member of a paid DMing troupe, I 100% feel the "crazy underpriced" part. @melissamartin41462 жыл бұрын
So funny, I'm a fan of them both and when Jenny posted her video my first thought was "oh wow that place Ginny Di went??" Seems like this was at the more peak of the park's experience and things went downhill from there, while Ginny had so much hope for things to just keep getting better in 2019 D: (I'm sure COVID didn't help). Also Ginny's videos are excellent, 10/10 recommend
@jnbsp35122 жыл бұрын
There are other videos from the season that Ginny went and they also looked great, it really looked like even the average guest was greeted by proper storylines and roleplay. The train conductor actually told stories in character. They had a pony, trained ducks. The guilds and their quests made sense. It also looked like they had Beer in the other taverns in the park proper? Maybe 0% though. I still agree with Jenny's take that for the average non larping family it would be difficult to figure out how they could enjoy Evermore. But it also shows that there USED to be something there for the larp fans. There was such a pileup of letdowns for Jenny's group with how the park has degraded.

When my wife and I went we spent the first hour and a half just wandering around, cause I was geeking out in excitement, and my wife was watching me like "so, what do you think?". I can't wait to go back. Got the privilege to meet one of the directors out of character and just talk for like 30 or so minutes. One of the lead Disney park designers started Evermore with a few other greats. You're spot on about the characters being able to just have conversation in character really well. Pretty sure each actor is given an expansive character backstory and personality traits and outlooks to follow that when they respond they know where to be. Plus they spent quite a while in testing and practice before they opened the park to get character and story down perfectly. The director we spoke with informed us that on top of the houses and statues being made specifically for Evermore, the grave stones and several doors and many other things were brought over from European countries because you just can't fake authentic old and worn materials as well as the real thing. Which I thought was perfect. As to the actors, there are a lot in the park, but what we were told is that several characters that aren't hard to change out, have a couple actors playing them. Most of those actors don't work there full time as I understood, it's a paid hobby they get to do, which is awesome, partly why the park fees are so low. If I lived closer I would find it hard not to go all the time. My goal is to experience the story in full for each season. I tried being in character but didn't dress the part. My wife and I got to fast track some of the story because we figured stuff out quick without going through the steps, which depends on the conversation you have with the characters. They will give more information if you ask the right things, plus if you act in character with them they are told to give bonus story material and stuff. Encouragement to join in on the story with them. One thing you didn't point out is that attendees are seen as people from this world and Evermore people are from their world.... Not going to give spoilers on that 😉 though

Thank you so so much for this! I live about 2 hours from Evermore and go several times per season with friends, and I WANT people to pour in like crazy. This is one of the most special places I’ve ever been, and I desperately want it to succeed in the long term and be open (and busy) every night. You are very accurate in many of your observations, and I must say, it’s been a complete joy to see how they’ve evolved through the year they have been opened. We were there opening night. The acting and story was still so on point, but it was obvious that they were still trying to figure out how to create the right flow for the guests, and they just keep doing better every time I’ve been there. I have a collection of weird stuff they tried too, like special tarot cards for completing tasks, “gold” coin (you were right, and I was probably one of the reasons they stopped that, though I assure you I had every intent to spend it in-game later...but they had already changed to the rocks), and their integration of new guests into the fold with frequents keeps getting better. To any Evermore actors reading this, you are amazing and I love you! Big Faldor fan too. He’s been there at least since aurora and I swear he can look into souls. Also, if you go back soon, find the Persian fellow playing the cool hand steel drum thing and talk to him about his past. We talked for nearly an hour last time, and he legit had me in tears. His story is beautiful.

In my opinion, the BEST thing about Evermore is that the story actually keeps going! You’re right about that. Characters die, there is actually a plot from day to day (it’s not just the same plots every day or week). If you miss a day or two, you get to catch up on what’s going on. There is literally something new that happens EVERY day (usually more than one thing)! I don’t know how the writers do it.

We were really unimpressed for that and other reasons but it sounds like they got their stuff together over the years! I'm interested in going one they reopen.

This sounds so awesome. The only thing that would make it better is if it lasted longer, had more intricate quests, and wasn't in the middle of the city, and they had some forest and cave like areas to quest within.In other words have what they have now, but also go full LARP, for a greater price. I, too, have worked at Ren Faires, as well as been part of running and acting in LARPs, and this sounds like it would be so much fun to work there.
@lilymcallister97515 жыл бұрын
I was thinking the same. If you traveled and spent a lot to go there, 5 or even a two day 10 hour visit just seems like such a short time. I understand the cost of sustaining a day long schedule but it just popped into my mind that the park could possibly be open for a "renn type" vibe for the day, allowing more entry fees, more retail/merchant sales (and rental income), and more concession sales all giving the park $$ to maintain. Alternative shows bringing in repeat customers every season who may not wish for the Larp/character immersion. That way the base sunk cost of the place would possibly be utilized more efficiently. Then allow customers to stay for the quest lines they do currently. Charge more for entry and no up charge for the nightly visit, that way if patrons didn't stay, no biggie. But sell tickets JUST for the LARPlite experience, just not for the day experience. That would allow it to not turn into a RENN faire solely, but generate more revenue. If I could do that (omygod, imagine buulding INNS you could book and stay overnight!). I would SO cross the country to do that. 48 hours of immersion...oh yea. 10? I couldn't really justify it unless it was an easy day trip.
@lilymcallister97515 жыл бұрын
Oh oh oh and to your idea...have full LARP tickets for a once a month or season main quest! Control the ticket amounts so you didn't overrun the place but most definitely extend the experience. And it would be so good if the model was sustainable, to expand to more locations, locally (your cave and forest suggestion) and also in more states so people on the east cost and other locales far far away could attend. If only I had a zillion dollars...le sigh.

I've been accompanying Evermore since their team started to raise money for it online, share the concepts, build the park, have actor auditions..... and never once have I seen them sharing a project without being absolutely invested in every detail of it. No one can doubt their love and passion for creativity, diversity and for building a community that values each person that steps through their gates. If anyone has a chance, please go, not only to support an amazing group of people, but also to truly experience something magical that's the only way I can describe Evermore and it's team.

For anyone who is worried how Evermore has fared since Covid... It is still in operation, though they have had to change how interaction works. The owner realized how expensive it was to run so many times a week, and so right now, they are opened only on weekends, with month long shutdowns to prepare for their next season. That said, It is still very much worth the cost. I live about 45 minutes away from it, and have gone twice. Both times have been amazing, though I will admit it sort of ruins the atmosphere when patrons don't even dress up a little bit. Nonetheless, for its cost, it is worth helping them out!

I go to Evermore Park at least once a week! Absolutely love this review of Evermore. It’s very accurate and very fair. It is also worth going to at any time. The creators have said that Evermore park will always be expanding. They have even more land off to the side to keep expanding once all 3 phases are complete. In regards to the story you certainly were only getting the tip of the iceberg. the depth of story is there. It will go as deep as you want to take it. For instance that shady merchant (Rooster) became way more ethical because of a crazy story plot line. There is a Fortune teller named Jardani and he is a body snatcher. He stole the body of a Vampire because he was murdering people. Something happened and this vampire named Demetri began to regain control over the body. So the FaeKing Exercised Demetri from the body. Which resulted in Demetri basically horcruxing himself inside people. Rooster being one. And the FaeKing found out that Rooster was hiding this piece. So he then destroyed it. But the powerful magic messed with Roosters mind and made him overly honest. Every character has a crazy story like that. And there is so much complexity that it’s outstanding. Other fun stuff. About 2/3rds of the statues are genuine articles. They date back to as early as the 1600s. A ton of artifacts, grave stones and set pieces are authentic historical artifacts that they bought in Europe. So much history to delve into at Evermore. Both Fictional and Real. Highly recommend people go and check it out. And go to each season!
@SonsOfLorgar5 жыл бұрын
As a European, it really grates me to hear of historical artefacts beeing desecrated and destroyed by use in this way. Please ask them to replace any salvageable original objects with modern replicas. Because it's just as disrespectful and despicable as how the European aristocracy bought, collected and ruined everything from Native American totem poles to egyptian mummies and forced adoptions to "civilize" native people on Greenland, in Alaska, in Sapmi (arctic Scandinavia), in Australia etc.
@skydeceiver79475 жыл бұрын
SonsOfLorgar I’m sorry to hear that this is a point of contention. It’s something that i am unaware of having been an issue in history. Im not particularly knowledgeable on art and artifacts and what counts as respecting or disrespecting. I’m also not sure as to how these artifacts are supposed to be cared for. When learning of them and seeing them in the park they are placed in ways as to keep them respected but also for people to see and admire. I’m not the authority on knowledge for these artifacts but I know a few of the artifacts were displaced because where they were being kept was being built over with new buildings. From everything I’ve seen they mean to take care of them. And I don’t see how it is desecrating or destroying them. I would appreciate any more knowledge on this and why it is offensive. I will also be doing some of my own research so that if it is I can reach out and see the parks stance on it.

Hi Ginny! A bunch of people who I am very good friends with and who are some of my closest friends in the world are in my life because of Evermore. They loved it so much that they created a magic system to use in the park that became a Discord based RP experience with ten planes, 6 different guilds you can be and tons of races and skills that your character can be and have. We have 150 or so members, 40-50 of which are active players with OOC roles that involve world-building and developing mechanics for both in park play and online RP. Anyone you saw in the park with a red armband or something similar on their bodies was in the Syndicate because it's not officially a part of Evermore and only people with the red armbands can use magic on each other in person, in the park. So many of my friends were there when you were and I am so glad you got to enjoy it with them! If you want more information on the Syndicate, Here is a link for you! www.thesyndicateguilds.com/ Come back soon! Lore is soon upon us! Also, all the characters you were describing, I knew who they were right away! Faldo and Lonnie and Turno and Suds. Did you meet or hear about the fortune teller Jardani who is housing the soul of a vampyre name Demetri? Literally one of the highlights of the season and one of the biggest tie ins to what will happen in Lore. I'm going to stop now because I could go on forever about Evermore. GAH I love it.
@GinnyDi5 жыл бұрын
Wow, that's intense! I could see how that would be really appealing if you lived close enough to the park to visit regularly.
@skydeceiver79475 жыл бұрын
Kendall Merritt I’ve seen stuff on the syndicate. And while I know it started as an Evermore thing. It seems as if it is just it’s own LARP group that happens to use Evermore related. And it isn’t really connected other whys.
@kmerritt095 жыл бұрын
@@skydeceiver7947 Hi there! So the Syndicate was created to introduce a system of magic play to the park. We are not officially linked, but use Evermore as a platform for our live-action gameplay, and we do visit the park regularly. They know who we are and what we're doing, but we also don't let our gameplay interfere with the experience of non-Syndicate members in the park itself. We differentiate ourselves from non-Syndicate members with red armbands that have to be worn if you want to play. Most of our RP takes place online, and many of our members are from out of state, so when they come to the park, it's just as special for them as it was for Ginny when they come and get to experience it with us. We have meetups outside of Evermore. A bunch of us are going to the Utah State Ren Fest this weekend, and it is LARP like in that way, but I would not call it just a LARP. Like I mentioned above, it's a really great way to make friends and have more to do at Evermore than just their quests. We go multiple times a season and have Syndicate events at the park but, as I said, we don't mess with what Evermore itself is trying to do. It's supplemental. On the Discord, you can play and make friends there that, when you get to the park, it's exciting to see them come to life. It's not every day you get given a quest by someone to go kill someone else, they give you only healing spells, you then decide you like that other person better and join his pirate crew instead of killing him, while meeting an ancient ice dragon named Illdrax and making friends with the dragons trainer and his daughters, who have just started training a young dragon of their own. One of those things was Syndicate related, and the other was Evermore related and they happened on the same night. I dunno. I've been with the Syndicate from almost the start and it means a lot to me because it helped me not feel alone anymore. I went with a friend from my local LARP and made a whole new group of friends at the same time, and have been given responsibilities in the development of a whole new system of TTRPG. We don't get paid. We do what we do because to us the Syndicate is worth it. I highly encourage you to visit thesyndicateguilds.com. The website is slightly out of date, but it explains what the Syndicate is much more eloquently than I ever could.

I've gone once. It's awkward at first putting yourself fully into the game (as it were,) but actors are genuinely skilled at maintaining character and rolling with curveballs. When the lady in the mausoleum debated me on lore I'd gathered from other factions, then turned and told my son "Don't wake the dragon, it's still too weak," I knew they had something special. I plan to return, and recommend the place to any rpg nerd. Maybe make sure you're kids know to keep their hand to themselves first, however.
