Hank sang this together with Floor for the first time in the Dutch TV show "Beste Zangers" (Best singers). He was the Dutch phantom. He set a requirement to do this with Floor there, - if Nightwish came to the Netherlands he would do it with them - and Floor said YES to that. So I bought tickets to the Ziggo Dome, Amsterdam, and waited for two years, due to covid. And yesssss,, the phantom was there :) More Greetings from Norway :)

I love both Floor and Tarja, but the star to me is Marko. Heard many singers sing this and Marko is by far the best Phantom I've ever heard. Demonic and crazy. perfect for what the character is supposed to be.

I was there in Amsterdam, it was epic❣️ I was bouncing up and down when I realized they were doing this! So great hearing them do the Phantom again with the official Dutch Phantom! It was a surprise I sort of counted on because it was promised in Beste Zangers 2019.

I was indeed there in Ziggo Dome, there was some anticipation this might happen. But then when the song started you heard the roar of the crowd, incredible. Good that you did both versions, imo it's not about comparing versions and vocalists, but appreciating what a fantastic group of musicians Nightwish was and still is.

Thanks for doing both versions. The Tarja/Marko version is the same 2005 concert as the High Hopes video you watched, Tarja's last NW show. The last time Nightwish would perform this song, until 17 years later in this version with Floor and Dutch Phantom Henk Poort. Floor and Henk sang it together at the 2019 Beste Zangers Dutch TV show. Henk agreed to do that on the condition that when NW played in The Netherlands, they would perform it again. The arrangement is by Tuomas. The 2005 version, song #5 in an 18 song set, is my favorite, because of Marko, but both are awesome . Andrew Lloyd Weber saw that one, and loved it. This is your introduction to Tarja with Nightwish, she is the most operatic of the 3 NW leading ladies. To hear her on a Nightwish original, suggest song #6 in the 2005 show, it's called "The Siren"

I say, "Why choose?" They're both great. And I'll add a vote to check out the Floor/Henk version from Beste Zangers 2019 ep 8; the reactions from the other singers is outstanding in and of itself. Then you can fall down the Beste Zangers rabbit hole; that entire season is gold.

Gracias for doing this for me iconic Versions. I saw both Life, although Tarja ofc not on Finland. Best of both Worlds. Totally agree on Markos Charisma , when he got an Mic in reach and Sings(not talk). For me, Tarja was -and is, the nice bright eyed Lady, singing Her Operas and is simply happy with the Audience loving what she do. Floor is the one, who commands the very Souls of the Audience, in my humble Opinion. I listened to one Song from Tarja and Marco Life from nowadays performances and instantly reclined interest to all Thumbs for likwise Recons. In my Eyes and Ears they didnt age well as Duett and even as Presence on Stage. And this all day yesterday Lovers in the Comments didnt help. Marko's grittiness and Tarja's dark voice just make this version so menacing, I love that! Also the fact that Tarja's vibrato during the last part is perfectly timed with the beat of the drums just gets me, it's so so so good!!

For another great Tarja/Marko performance, I would suggest The Siren from the same concert. Aside from the usual* beautiful classical style from Tarja, you will hear her do something else very interesting and different with her vocals in that piece. *If 'usual' is the correct word to use with Tarja's singing, but I'm sure you get what I mean.

Marco is simply the best, the difference. No shade on Uncle Henk, but Marco's interpreation of the Phantom is simply the best. And Juka's drumming and fills is the best.

Excellent Gina, you spoil me for perfectly balanced, leveled YT audio, articulate sound, non-plosive and non-sibilant, I despair with many. I wonder if you aim for -6dBm to allow for headroom. I concur, I have no favourites between them, both versions bring something to the table. Disclaimer, this is a bit of a rant. As a multi-genre professional musician for over 40 years I’m sick and tired of the “best” or “greatest” arguments and, in cases of 2 extremely high performance levels in this case, one is better than the other. These words do not exist in my vocabulary because it boils down to so many individual factors it can’t be measured. I’m not saying people can’t have their favourite versions of any particular piece of music but I will never accept anyone’s opinion about better, best or greatest. And I would never impart that to another person myself. I’m a classical, musical, rock musician and I have played in the pit band for Phantom and here’s my take, if anyone is interested. I like the performances of Floor and Poort because he sings the part as it’s done in the musical. But I also love Tarja and Marko because of the interpretation Marko brings. Floor and Tarja bring their own interpretations and I appreciate both! End of rant. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming! 😊

Both versions are great, but remember Tarja was 26, Marko 39. Floor 41 and Henk 66 (and no experience with that kind of concert). And Floor had her cancer diagnose and surgery about 8 weeks before.

The way I see it, these are really hard to compare. Henk is like Christopher Lee's Count Dracula, elegant and alluring, with his monstrosity only peeking through on occasion; while Marko is like Max Schreck's Count Orlok, wearing his monstrosity on the surface for all to see. I have a preference for the latter, with all its punk notes, but it's a preference of uniqueness rather than quality. Both are excellent. I feel like you should do _The_ _Islander_ (Tampere) or _While_ _Your_ _Lips_ _Are_ _Still_ _Red_ (Wembley) soon, to hear another side of Marko...

Just an interesting "note!" I have tried my best to time how long Floor holds that last note...best I can do on my wrist watch that is a chronograph is Floor holds the last note 12.2 seconds.

She holds the note long because its 50% a belt, not 80 % head voice like Tarja - which is harder. Belting can technically be done for an extensive period of time because you inhale new air, as opposted to expanding the existing air when you use the head voice, thin it out, to reach the higher notes - hence why Tarja hits the note almost a full note higher than Floor.

I was there - and we knew this was comming; because she promised Henk Poort to perform The Phantom with Nightwish when they performed in Amsterdam. The promise was made in the Beste Zangers show which both featured Floor and Henk and Floor wanted to perform The Phantom as het duet with het idol Henk Poort. So you have to see that version too now!. Greetings from the Dutch Nighwish Army. Love the Tarja/Marco version as well - Marco is great there!

I'm a big Floor fan and her high note at the end beats no one. In the overall package, however, I like the version with Marco, because of Marco the best. It's a pity that it never came to a version with Floor and Marco. I would have liked to see this version as well. But I guess even then the Tarja Marco version is hard to beat.

Those two versions are quite par. Henk with huge experience and "Nightwish family" -shirt. And because in 2005 version there's no one in penguin suit, Marko had do the surprise trick, and he did it well. The best version comes from the BZ2019. lt's much more intimate and there Floor was the surprise to all the others. ⛄👍

Enjoyed your reaction! Now you need to see IMO the best "Nightiwsh" version of this song, Floor and Henk on the Dutch singing show Beste Zangers in 2019, if only for yourself. Obviously the rest of the band is not there but Floor an Henk use the Nightwish arrangement but more rock then metal. My next favorite is the Tarja and Marko version but only because of Marko's insanely amazing vocals. He is the creepiest most evil Phantom ever. I enjoy Tarja's voice in many other Nightwish songs (The Siren, Planet Hell, Nemo, Forever Yours) but not so much here. I just don't like her big wobbly vibrato during the epic end of the song. I much prefer Floor's straight tone. Having said that, Floor, Henk and Nightwish in Amsterdam is my third favorite version. Henk is great and I love the distortion he learned to add when they were on Beste Zangers but Floor's choice to go for a more operatic sound, really rounding her vowels I find less expressive then her Beste Zangers performance. If you watch the Beste Zangers performance I think the differences in her performances will jump out at you. In the end all three performances are fantastic and my preferences are just that, my preferences based on what I like and very small differences in the performances.

I also don't have a favorite version of that song; they are both exceptional for different reasons. Even that Floor's the beast signer on earth, i have flew songs that i prefer Tarja version. Wishmaster, Nemo, End Of All Hope, Sleeping Sun, Wish I Had An Angel & The Siren.

New version is a bit lame IMO. It's very good of course, but compared to this epic masterpiece with Marko as Phantom and Jukka on drums, it just can't reach the same level of epicness. Also, I love Tarja's operatic vocals more than Floor's. But take this as a tip for your future reactions, I don't recommend these double reactions, because the fandom is so badly divided. Some love everything NW do/did, but some can't stand one or more of their singers, and these comment sections are sometimes like a warzone 🙄

And for the record, I have nothing against making these comparisons. I do it all the time. Some days I need to listen to new Nightwish, some days old. Tarja sounds more authentic opera singer to me (even that she always says that she is not an opera singer but classically trained), and I usually tend to prefer her on their older songs. But Floor is just as amazing singer, and she does a lot of things that Tarja can't.

From an audio engineer’s perspective, it might be interesting to compare the official live video (1st one) with fan recordings of "The Phantom" from both shows at Ziggo Dome 2022 - just to see how much.. hmm.. “studio enhancement” was done. Not on Floor’s vocals, mercifully enough, but I shall say no more. As to the song itself, I’m rather indifferent to it, but still, I believe both Phantoms killed the character here. “Killed” as in “butchered”, that is. There are videos of Floor with Russell Allen and Joacim Cans (Christmas Metal Symphony 2008 & 2013 respectively), both of whom were much better IMO. You can also see an epic Floor fail in the last one.😂

No Phantom is as menacing as Marko, and Tarja's darker voice works wonders in this piece. Floor has an edge on poppier songs and in multigenre travels, but this is pure Tarja territory. And obviously how Tuomas originally arranged it. It was not a bad concert to be in.

Both are great versions, but you have missed mho the best version with Floor and Henke on the Dutch TV show Beste Zangers from 2019 - absolutely insane. Even if you don't react to it, watch so you can see for yourself. If you wanna see Marko at his very best, watch the Pink Floyd tribute "High Hopes" from the End of an Era concert. Tarja kills it sing NEMO from End of an Era also .
