Ma come si fa a dire cose simili? La Pratt è oggigiorno l'unica a poter avvicinarsi alle illustre Semiramidi del passato e comunque oggigiorno nessuna può paragonarsi a lei. Certo qualche anno fa era ancora più stupenda in Lucia, ma rimane eccellente e matura per il pesante ruolo che qui interpreta.

I heard June Anderson, Chris Merritt and Sam Ramey in this opera in the 1990's. Today's Rossini singers just don't cut it for me. Semiramide's coloratura aria "Bel raggio lusinghier", as sung here, is rather embarassing to hear. Vergogna!

Apparently people hired as singers are now allowed to just fit the coloratura in at their vocal convenience, no matter where the notes fall in a particular tempo, or just leave out the notes if it worries them.......got it.

Il terzo di sèguito lavoro òttimo di maestro Frizza, che ho sento recentemente: "Aida" al Teatro La Fenice, "I Pirata" al Teatro alla Scala, e "Semiramide" adesso. Lui sta alla fila prima degli direttori italiani e quindi mondiali. Il cast buono, soprattutto Signore/Signori Iervolino e Esposito. Ma, ahimè, la Signora Pratt, la cantante eccellenta, ha i grandi problemi con la voce. Paragonate la in "Convenienze ed inconvenienze teatrali" (La Scala, 2009), e adesso in "Semiramide". La sua voce qui - come l'uccello ferito. Ma lei era molto suggestiva alle ambedue finale. Il allestimento anche non pessimo, mi piace l'immagìne di Nino, quello è la scena diffìcilissima per ogni regista. Penso, che Rossini sarèbbe contento.

I like her presence but her coloratura leaves much to be desired she just slurs her voice using her vibrato as best she can over runs that need to have individual notes sung very quickly. She can hit the high notes but she does not have the flexibility for true coloratura - but who does these days? The likes of Galli-Curci, Tetrazzini, Sutherland and the rest are far distant. Today the thinking among producers is that as an opera singer you have to have a BIG voice to sing in a BIG hall and the more you can bellow the better off your are. The more subtle, lighter more flexible, well trained voices that also tend to be more artistic which ruled the opera world when this opera was written are shut out. The huge voices have their place but so do the others.

There is no evidence that lighter voices ruled during the time when Rossini was writing. If you read the critics of the time voices were very much more like the great large voiced dramatic coloraturas and coloratura mezzos than the light canaries who took over the music when Wagner and verismo co-opted the larger voices. There is also not historical support for the idea that the light voiced sopranos of the 19th Century [e.g., Jenny Lind] were "more artistic" than heavier voices. Indeed, even in her later years Pasta's voice was likened to the great paintings of Leonardo da Vince and Michelangelo for its ability to convey emotional immediacy.

К сожалению, школа bel canto уходит в прошлое Сейчас так голоса уже почти никто не ставит Ставка делается на силу и громкость голоса, но не.на умение им владеть. Почти не осталось певцов, способных спеть мелизмы и пассажи. Музыка композиторов 16-начала 18 века очень сложна для современных исполнителей. Поэтому операми композиторов того времени мы не можем насладиться в полной мере.

One of Rossini's greatest operas. But this cast is woefully inadequate. They seem to know NOTHING about bel canto technique, but that is only matched by the silly and clueless production, where every singer appears in a completely different style. What is this jumble of ugliness? Listen to the Sutherland/Horne version for a GREAT performance. This video is an insult to Rossini.

Dirò una cosa controcorrente che non ha nulla da togliere alla ottima produzione allestita dal teatro, ma che di fatto va a sollevare un quesito che da anni mi si pone quando sento queste opere serie di Rossini: ma sono davvero dei capolavori o sono dei "pastiche" un po' confusionari spesso appesantiti da troppe chiuse, troppe strette, troppi inutili gorgheggi che non abbelliscono affatto la melodia spianata ma vanno invece a deturparla di inutili e ripetitivi orpelli?...di fatto sono opere ridondanti, pesanti, eccessivamente barocche, stancanti ...che sia meritato l'oblio in cui stanno cadendo?. Mi sembrano dei giganteschi marchingegni meccanici ove le emozioni e i sentimenti via via si perdono

For whatever reason, the Arsace swallows her voice in many passages rather than keeping the tone clear and forward. She clearly has the range and technical capacity but if she keeps forcing the voice down into her throat she will not last long. Compare this to Pratt's perfectly placed, forward resonant singing to hear the technical issue involved handled correctly.

Semiramide is a very long opera -reminds of the anecdote about the wife who dragged her reluctant husband to an opera performance and the opera was "Semiramide" - after the 3 and a half long performance or such was over the husband declared - " if this was a SEMI ramide I'd hate the have to sit through the WHOLE thing!

Mr. Pfaff :Bien entendu Blake, c'est bien connu, était unique (encore que le timbre ...), mais de nos jours on ne trouve pas d'équivalent, donc superflu de le citer : Enea est un joli garcon qui chante assez bien, cela est déjà beaucoup! Jessica Pratt par contre est comparable à beaucoup de ses glorieuses devancières et n'a pas de rivales de nos jours . Elle est belle de surcroit, encore qu'astiquée ici comme une vedette hollywoodienne années 1950 plutot que souveraine babylonienne!
