Lighting up the city of Kyoto each July is the Gion Matsuri! One of the most famous festivals in Japan. Seeing the Gion Festival is a great experience, with the festival dominating the city’s downtown area (Shijo area). This huge festival takes up the entire month of July, with parades, street parties and plenty of food to be enjoyed. Something to definitely put in your trip.

Hi Lisa,i loved your video of the parade, the floats look very intricately built and colourful, the weather was perfect,..though a good idea to take precautions with a hat and sunscreen . The different foods all looked delicious and i would definitely try the frozen mikan, Thank you for your previous replies, have a great weekend😊

I really enjoyed the background information you presented! Really added context and detail that makes your content so great lisa! Things like the 3 chigo on the float. Makes it more interesting to learn about than just looking at it and saying "oh its just another parade" the sounds really enrich the experience the youre presenting here! Hashimaki looked really delicious, they def caught my eye. Tamago senbei OMG!!! Youre eating like royalty out there 😂 Feels like night time at festivals is more special tooo

Thank you! I always try to read up abit before hand, I think it makes the experience much more enjoyable when I know what I’m looking at :)))))) Festival food is too fun. But man it’s pricey! The cucumber was 400yen hahahaha and the mikan 500yen. But I think Mikan was really worth it, it tasted like dessert - not just some frozen fruit.

I was invited by a Japanese friend to Kyoto on May 15 to celebrate the Aoi Matsuri, but the festival got cancelled due to intermittent rain. Hopefully, I'll get to see a festival the next time I visit Kyoto.

Why is this an important festival?

Too bad she ruins the atmosphere by standing in front of fake Wisteria. It is totally out of season in July as it blooms in Mid April to Mid May. Kyoto residents are very particular about the seasons in their hometown. EVERYTHING depends on what season it is: designs on kimono, obi, and yukata, folding fans, handkerchiefs... This festival is hundreds of years old and there are so many different depictions of it on folding screens and scrolls, and other precious objects. There are always special foods and drinks, which conjure up the proper mood or atmosphere which reflect the passage of the many seasons which Kyotoites celebrate. So sorry, but it would be wonderful to have some informative and interesting narration. There is so much richness and depth to this event and this was a missed opportunity to really share it. BTW There is only ONE Chigo, the other two are his companions, called komoro. They walk, but the chigo has been consecrated at Yasaka Shrine and must be carried by his father or uncles until the festival begins. Also, your camera person moves far too quickly to really get a good look at the many diverse aspects. Most particularly the writing was impossible to catch. SLOW DOWN! Rather than enjoying this video, I only experienced frustration and sadness. It seems as though she knew nothing at all about what was really going on. It is always a good idea to share something which you actually know about. Do your homework next time and come back to us so we can enjoy this extraordinary event.
