He is not realizing the full potential in his chops. Slow motion shows his wrist snap and acceleration occurs AFTER the contact, compare this to legendary korean chopper Joe Sae-hyuk's timing. Same thing applies to attacking players too, I think it comes with time, namely the late contact and utilizing the full swing and wrist snap. Most beginners and intermediate players also go through this phase in which they go thru the full motions of hip rotation elbow and wrist snap but wonder why their topspins do not have the same quality as more mature players who seemingly produce heavy rotation and speed effortlessly with half the motion. The secret is timing of the contact and utilizing the full swing with late timing. But of course it just takes time to reach that level

I don't think Gionis cares much about that little bit of extra spin and cares more about having as much control over the ball as possible.
