THE STORY BEHIND THIS VIDEO
Giorgia Marra is an undisputed artistic icon of Taranta, a phenomenon that for 3,000 years has been strongly rooted in the popular culture of Salento (southern Puglia) and which, from Tarantism, finds its maximum expression in the music and dance of Pizzica. Giorgia Marra's artistic career began at the age of 9yo with Rhythmic Gymnastics, Sport and Discipline of which Giorgia became Official Technician and teacher in Lecce. From a very young age Giorgia and her instructor Stefania Carpentieri have carried out anthropological and historiographic research on movement and dance, in order to identify a stylistic key in search for artistic innovation. In 2014 the two Artists met Zimbaria group which with its unique, obsessive and unmistakable style of playing Pizzica, led to the great revelation, to the vision of depth and innovation that the dancers were looking for ... it was already completely expressed in the music and dance of Pizzica! They began composing the first rhythmic exercises while established a working relationship and a sincere friendship with the group that immediately led Giorgia Marra to perform as a dancer on stage during Zimbaria live performances.
This artistic wedding saw Giorgia become the very innovative dancer in Italian Popular Music scene, the first dancer who reinvented the Pizzica dance by bringing it to a higher dimension of "Taranta" level, accomplishing an artistic new brand style far beyond the value of any tradition. The extraordinary Giorgia speaks to us of her experience with Zimbaria: “dancing on the rhythm of their instruments gives me a cathartic sensation, as if the music flew in the veins purifying body and soul. As a gymnast my movements are influenced by the sport that I have practiced all my life, in fact I like to think I was born from Rhythmic and then have been adopted by Pizzica, whose sound and musicality give me a sense of liberation and frenzy ". The myth of the spider Tarantula that bites women in Salento by injecting the poison of psychic alteration, obsessiveness and schizophrenia shines through some of the figures that Giorgia's body draws in the video, figures that symbolize the "evil of the spider" up to Tarantata liberation, a popular ritual in which the tarantata woman writhes on the ground and is freed from the music (Zimbaria's music if the most powerfull). The very special Pizzica-Taranta of Zimbaria starts from the legacy of the founder of the group, the popular Master Pino Zimba, and today continues in the work of the brilliant Rossano Ruggeri who is the leader and composer of the group; Zimbaria has released the single "Tormento" dedicating the cover to Giorgia Marra, as a tribute to the energy she brings when dances during live performances.
