Caro amico, oggi ci si deve contentare di quel che abbiamo, da tempo la pletora di grandi voci si é dileguata, ed il passato, come sempre, non ritorna. Concordo sulf atto che l'Attila sia un'opera che necessita di voci verdiane di prima grandezza. Oggi risulta spesso arduo mettere in scena Verdi... Con stima

Grandissimi interpreti. Voci sopraffine di un Tempo che non c'è più. Oggi abbiamo una lirica da spazzatura, a cominciare dai registi e coreografi modaioli che mettono in scena spettacoli miserrimi in stile "astratto-globalista" degni di una piazzetta agostana con gente passeggia col gelato in mano.

Ramey’s in the mask. Zancanaro’s in the chest. Both great voices. But Zancanaro’s clarity stands out. Ramey is just a tiny bit hollow. Zancanaro is solid gold. It is fantastic being able to listen to them side by side. Thank you for posting this duet.

Spot on. Ramey muscles his voice, which betrayed him over time. But what an athlete. Zancanaro produces seemingly effortlessly. You are never aware of the training that most opera singers bludgeon you with.

Beato lei che li ha ascoltati dal vivo... ma ho ascoltato dei loro recital ed erano entusiasmanti. Zancanaro é una voce verdiana eccelsa ma perfetto anche in Bellini, Donizetti ed i veristi. Ha una tecnica ed un timbro che lo rendono un grande in assoluto.

very late to the discussion but: It's funny that one would say Ramey was unemotional and Zancanaro wasn't, because Zancanaro also came in for this sort of criticism from some people. As for me, I love them both, and for pretty much the same reasons. I like singing to be secure, clear, emphatic and accurate (to me, that is what is beautiful) and for the singers to have unique voices. That is definitely how I would describe Ramey. Anyhow, check out his "Old Man River" if you want to feel something :-)

that was Muti, he opened lots of cuts that were traditional but he wouldn't allow the singers any showoff bits, he even stopped Manrico from singing his high C in trovatore

Purists tend to forget what theatre is about- excitement! Can you imagine him conducting early Callas? All the legendary high notes we treasure would have been forbidden. So boring! They would have had wonderful fights, though

Ricordiamo anche che un basso cantabile può avere assolutamente una voce voluminosa. Se si tiene conto delle tre fondamentali divisioni della voce di basso (buffo, cantante e profondo), si evince che il termine cantante/ cantabile è quasi improprio, giacché molti bassi potevano spaziare efficacemente nelle tre categorie. Citerei su tutti Siepi, Giaiotti, Ghiaurov e forse, soprattutto, Ezio Flagello. Voci assolutamente enormi in termini quantitativi, ma capaci di modulare a seconda del ruolo. Altra precisazione forse necessaria è per la voce di basso- baritono. Non è un baritono con delle note basse agevoli, ma una voce di basso di grande estensione e con un registro acuto esteso e sicuro.
