I was in tears watching this scene. I'm a Scot (from Glasgow) who lived in Japan (for 3 years, moved back 10 years ago). Just watched this last week. I had no idea interpretive dance could be so powerful. Incredible character development and world building (sasuga na!) leading up to this point (Takehiro Hira, Kelly MacDonald and ESPECIALLY Will sharpe!) Incredible editing, touching on my two home countries too, as a silly bonus! That aside, spell binding! Glad Will was awarded a BAFTA as Best Supporting Actor - amazing performance too!

@@lauradieztascon575 I think I understand what you’re referring to with the pretentiousness thing, but something to consider is cultural differences. The kinda poetic (“pretentious”) way of speaking is commonplace in screenplay/books in Japanese culture. As a Canadian of Japanese ethnicity, it was weird for me too at first- I just thought the way they talk in movies/tv shows was cheesy and fake. But it’s really just the beautiful way they write scripts and talk :)

I agree with everything written here. It was like the dance reached way down deep into my very SOUL when it happened. Then I had to watch it over and over because I was possessed by it. I shared it with some friends out of context, and I don't think it meant that much. But after watching the series, and seeing all the love yearning/love denied, it encompassed all the complexities of the characters' emotions. I teach theater and film at the college level, and it, by far, is one of the most extraordinary artistic moments I have ever witnessed.

I have replayed this scene for the 5th time as I'm writting this, and each time has moved me to tears. The emotions. The music. All the feelings of hope, despair, anguish, love, responsibility, reaching, disappointment, trapped, rejection, unfilled desire for approval, free spiritedness, happiness, moments of impossible decisions etc all multiplied itself in this intense few minutes. I am absolutely beyond words as to they have put this together. Depending on your stage in life, all these feelings we can relate to in our own lives, and what made it so incredibly powerful. This one scene, to me, is what being human is about.

The cinematic effect, the dance routine and the emotions placed behind the dance are absolutely phenomenal. I never was one to understand dancing from ballet to hip, etc, but this made me actually cry. You can relate from their expressions to the bearing the weight of a family members problems to the daughter being broken only looking for a place to call home within her parents to the family issues in general and lovers. It was so incredibly well done. 10 outta 10 would do it again
