CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Susanna (Winona Ryder) gets a personal sit down with Dr. Sonia Wick (Vanessa Redgrave).
FILM DESCRIPTION:
In 1967, 19-year-old Susanna (Winona Ryder) feels that "reality is becoming too dense" and is diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. The doctor suggests to her parents that she be committed to the Claymore Hospital, and she spends the next 18 months struggling with her troubled psyche and the bizarre world of the institution. Susanna bonds with several other patients, including Lisa (Angelina Jolie), Polly (Elizabeth Moss), and Georgina (Clea DuVall). As she realizes that Lisa is potentially dangerous and truly needs help, Susanna begins to work harder with her psychiatrist (Vanessa Redgrave) and the nurse on the ward (Whoopi Goldberg). But Susanna soon learns that getting out of the hospital is not as easy as getting in. Girl, Interrupted was based on the autobiography of Susanna Kaysen, who really did spend a year-and-a-half in the McLean Psychiatric Hospital in Belmont, Massachusetts.

Her Latin quotation shows that she is far smarter than most mental health professionals. To bring another person into a deeper understanding of their situation is a rare gift. She has other dimensions, obviously well versed in literature and philosophy. // I would like to add that I have personal experience to comment on therapists. I went to see one after my girlfriend died as the result of a serious accident, hours after I rushed her to the emergency room. I was depressed and needed to sort out my extreme confusion about the accident. The therapist was worthless, completely unable to help me because of his low intelligence (and maybe even laziness). This was not an atmosphere where I could make any progress. I left during the second session and told him I would not pay his bill because he was incompetent.

And yes: maybe it's time to get a new one. Not a therapist per se. But someone who you can just 'talk to' whilst, putting all that you've learned in therapy, into practice. It's VERY hard and very scary to change. Those deep breaths could help a great deal while you take the Wynona route. Keep breathing to remind yourself that you're still alive and growing and getting better.

This has been my favorite movie for years.. Am I the only one who thinks this movie is a reflection of thousands of people living there lives today? Wondering if we're crazy, just so we have somewhere we can fit in? Indulging in flaws that are holding us back, curling up with them and allowing them to feed on us, when all we have to do is get up and walk out the door... but were too self indulgent to realize how simple it would be to just take charge of your life and change it? I think this movie is about hiding inside yourself and finding your way out of the most powerful Prison: Your mind. I LOVE it.

BPD really strikes hard and I empathize with Susanna. She may have meant apathetic but she really is ambivalent. I am too. There’s the side that wants to give in and give up allow my dark thoughts to take hold. But it’s the other side that keeps pushing and keeps asking for help. He may not feel like he’s getting it but he’s trying.
@creadorcontenido6970

We all have dark thoughts, the point is to understand their function. Being human is symbolic construction, whether we like it or not, we all aim that construction because it's the only way to be fully human. Otherwise, embracing our darkness as an axe makes us animals. Then, we become vulnerable to other animals (crazy people) to use us and play with us, destroy us and the road of self-destruction will be complete: pure suffering, addictions, misery. Life is too short to waste it as an animal, let's do what we do best: be humans so we can give en receive love.

I think she just understood the word ambivalent to indicate no particular preference of outcome, i.e. she would be happy with either option; didn't really care. but the therapist nurtures her understanding of the word and contextualises it to her response in a way which evokes clarity. ambivalence was the right word, and the outcome of the meeting was that she needed to think deeply about how she really felt about her progress having plateaued. this is one of my favourite scenes in any film, ever.

When it comes to change talk, this is the most impactful in the movie. The therapist illicits motivation and provides complex reflective listening. Wisdom all rolled into one. As for the therapist, her tone is problematic. The term superiority comes to mind.

Her tone was objective. Maybe it seems superior because of how much insight this woman has. It can be intimidating, but I think she uses it effectively.

1:42 Such a great film yet still uses cliches and slurs . Good therapists (which she is) would never say ''crazy''. Also, there are not just two extremes between ''sane'' or ''crazy'', because having mental illness/disorder is not necessarily being insane. Also, Winona still doesn't understand the point of the movie, she recently said it's about women being ''punished'' for not fitting it instead of people with mental disorders who need help. It's offensive to imply that being treated in the psychiatric hospital is the ''punishment''. Don't come at me, please, I suffer from this stigma my whole life, didn't expect a ''progressive'' hollywood start to be so ignorant about the subject of her own film.
