The fact they didn’t put some of these scenes in the movie to better understand suzann really helped Lisa outshine her and seemed to Make the movie more about her

@@Droidruid1993 Angelina was wonderful, her performance was incredible, but the story was about _Suzanne,_ not Lisa. The deleted scenes would've helped us understand her struggles more if they were included.

@@WildVee I disagree. One character helps define the other, Vee. If you met these two in life, it is the impression you would have. The story that is about each is interior, but we catch glimpses.

I’ve seen people say that Lisa (Angelina Jolie) made this movie but I think that what they forget is that it was the portrayal of the toxic friendship that her and Susanna have. Susanna (Winona Ryder) played the follower role very well. Susanna was just as vital to the plot as Lisa. And watching how Susanna changed as a character with Lisa being around and once she’s gone is very vital to the meaning of the story. Also, Susanna plays a vital role in finally waking Lisa up and showing her that she is just as weak as the rest of them. Winona was just a phenomenal as Angelina and their chemistry is what made the movie so impactful.

The Aspirin overdose scene and the freaky hallucinations / dissociative episodes that preceded it should have definitely been included. It wasn't that long.

The only reason why I feel like the overdose scene was not included was fear of copycats being influenced by that scene. It happens years later in Degrassi when Ellie cuts herself as her form of self harm and a lot of people (me included) started doing it because we never knew we could ineffectively cope that way.

As someone who has suffered mental illness in early adulthood. The first cut scenes with the delusions are very accurate. It is less of hallucination and more like just a loss of reality

They should have left in the scenes with Susanna in the museum, and Susanna with her mother and the piano. Those really helped to understand better what was going on in her head. The scene with the blood gushing out from the meat at the store was just silly, though.

Peolpe who won’t read or listen to books miss out on all the great creativity in the authors mind and vision. when they wait for a movie to “interpret” a genuis writer you’re not experiencing Susannahs voice but the directors and actors interpretation. Why no more book reading? Tv media isn’t the only art form you know. Eg the famous ‘handmaids tale’ isn’t even the best thing Margaret wrote! Oryx and crake blew my mind.

Some of the best dialogue comes straight out of Susanna‘s book. you should read the book because her phrasing, the way she illuminates and describes these complex behaviours and feelings is on every page and every sentence and every word of that book. here it only shows up as Angelina reads Winonas’ diary out.

I feel like these scenes would have better allowed the viewer to understand Susanna's condition/diagnosis and why she was put in the institution (separate from reading the memoir). The first time I watched it I was like "but...she's not mentally unstable so why is she there?" But I guess maybe that's the point of the final cut of the film as well? Since we are experiencing it all through Susanna's view, we/she wouldn't "know" what we perceived/how we behaved was different than what was considered normal/healthy/functioning.

To be fair Angelina is probably more popular than either of them. They made money because of Marvel and some good movies, but Jolie is probably the highest class of Hollywood stars, she, Johnny Depp and Di Caprio. Even if her movies choice wasn't really great. It is more about her looks and charisma. What Marilyn Monroe was for 20th century, Angelina is probably for 21th century. All these women who are doing plastic surgeries just want to look like her, lips, nose, cheeks, jaw, eyes...

this is why if the director, editors, and producers have no knowledge of, don't suffer from or have no sympathy for mental illnesses they shouldn't create movies depicting them. They care more about the pace and length than about actually telling a mentally ill person's story. all these scenes make Suzanna an actual BPD patient and would've made it so much easier for people to understand her illness. Instead she needed up looking like a rebellious young adult that was "driving herself crazy". Valerie's scene saying that shouldn't have been in the movie, it was too harmful and perpetuates the idea that BPD sufferers are just doing it for attention... Yet they didn't care and just made it as fast paced and as dramatic as possible... The movie with these scenes in it is so much different, I wonder if there's an official director's cut copy...
@someidiot420
@someidiot420 3 жыл бұрын
yeah, unfortunately what a lot of directors/writers/producers dont understand is that the reality of mental illness is not a neat, organized storyline with clear cut motivations. its ugly, and messy, and it never really ends. trying to make art out of that is incredibly difficult. show too much, and the audience is quickly gonna become disengaged. show too little and they get a really bad picture of what it looks like, what the people suffering from it look like. it takes someone who has the experience and the skill to really toe that line.

I will never forgive these idiots for not keeping these scenes. especially the ones with hallucinations and breakdowns. the directors made the movie less real. bpd was portrayed so wrong in the movie just off the basis of the movie's info within the movie. This movie was more about a anti social abuser to other patients than union. it could have been both but so much less lisa and more suzanna and the other girls stories.
