While I do appreciate the idea that because she lives in such a vibrant city, she gets to experience and be influenced by many cultures... dude. Her family is from somewhere. Somewhere in Europe. It may be 6-8 generations back, but she still has genes from somewhere not North America. She should be encouraged to know what that is too. Her parents were dismisive WHILE AT THE SAME TIME telling her to go "find her story." Everyone deserves to be connected to thier ancestors, and the adults in her life should have helped. They didn't even call the grandparents! I remember this being me in elementary school, and just felt bad for her.

I agree with you but I have a somewhat different take on it. What if her ancestors moved to the USA so long ago that their actual origin is untraceable? Or if finding that trace requires knowledge, time, and skills that are out of the scope for a high school student? Maybe in the future when she graduates college, she might want to look for her origins, if she still has that curiosity. But until she does that, she - as much as anybody, would need a sense of belonging to identify who she is. And I, like you, appreciate the answer that she has come up with. What do you think?
