Good announcers will explain what is happening as the play happens, so you don't miss anything. Usually they show replays for a second look. Game time is 60 minutes, but between halfs and at halftime there can be 15- 25 minutes for commercial breaks (especially big televised games). After halftime the teams get a chance to warm up again (after halftime break). A game usually lasts around 4 hours, longer for injury timeouts, lot of penalties, overtime (NFL normally do not end with tied games).

The games are much longer because the game clock is not continuous like it is in soccer (sorry to offend anyone who is triggered by me using the word soccer). For example the game clock stops when players run out of bounds, incomplete passes, timeouts, injuries, challenges... there's a lot of reasons why the game clock stops. So 60 minutes of real-time play actually ends up being on average a little over 3 hours.

A yard is a little less than a meter. A yard is 36 inches, and one inch is 2.54 centimeters. We don't fully use the metric system. There are additional rules with regards to fumbles. If the offensive team fumbles the ball in the last 2 minutes of either half, or on 4th down, then they cannot advance a fumble unless the player that fumbled the ball is also the player that recovers the ball. If the offense fumbles on 4th down, or inside of two minutes and a different offensive player recovers then the ball is dead at the spot of the fumble, or the spot of the recovery, whichever is more favorable to the defense. The defense can advance any fumble they get. Another is on kicking plays. If the return man drops the ball, without having ever had control of it, then it's considered a muff. A muffed return can be recovered by the kicking team, but they cannot advance it on that same play. The kicking team then gets the ball at the spot of the recovery. The receiving team can recover a muff and advance it. A video you might like is "NFL knowing the rules moments".

The quarterback can score by running with the ball. He can also toss the ball to the running back to catch a pass to score.

Team rosters are 45 on the active list (submitted each weak to the league office) changing with injury reserve, and practice squads, which bring the total roster up higher. These rules are very similar to FIFA soccer if you know and watch that already. Always 11 players on each team on the field at a time, whether its Offense vs Defense (regular play), or special kicking units. *[A yard btw is 3 feet, a foot in 12 inches, A meter is about 39+ inches]* Special kicking units are situational depending on what the Offense is trying to do! Punting the ball away on 4th down when you don't think you can get the 10 yards, but you want to make the other team start from as far away from the endzone they need to score as possible (Punts usually move the ball about 40 yds further away on average). Field goals are a way for the offense to attempt to score 3 pts when a touchdown (6 points) probably isn't going to happen on that possession. This is usually done on 4th down, but can be done on any down, especially when the game time is almost over, and you need the field goal to tie or win the game! (Field goals have to go over the cross bar and between the uprights to be successful. The goal posts are located at the back of the endzone (10 yards deeper then the endzone goal line, and the ball is snapped from the line of scrimmage to the holder, another 7-8 yards deeper, so kick lengths must include this. The average field goals are usually 25-50 yds, with an exceptionally long field goal being 50-65 yards. After a touchdown is scored, an extra point is attempted on the following play. It scores 1 point if kicked (like a short field goal) or 2 points if it crosses the goal line into the endzone (like a touchdown on a regular play). Finally, each half of play begins with one team *kicking off* to the other team. This *Kick Off* also takes place after one team scores and they give possession back to the other team. The receiving team can try and run the ball back or take a knee in the endzone, ending the play, and placing the ball on the 25-yard line to start regular play with the offense. The field is 100 yards long with an additional 10 yards on either end to make the "End Zone" area. The "Line of Scrimmage" is wherever the referees mark forward progress (or loss of yardage) after each play. The *original line of scrimmage* does not change and is used to mark the 10 yards the offense needs to make a new "1st down", using measuring chains on the sideline, also controlled by game officials. Penalties are extremely difficult to explain to a new viewer, but they will eventually start to make sense if you watch enough games! To simplify them, once players on the line of scrimmage have set before the play starts, they cannot move. You cannot hold other players when you try to block them, or when they are trying to catch the ball. You cannot use excessive force when you tackle or block opposing players. Typically, this means hitting them from behind (if they don't control the ball) or using your head (Helmut) to hurt other players.

Another thing that may be unfamiliar is that the game is played in almost all weather. They play in rain, snow, freezing temps. Only reason they call it off is real danger (lightning, tornado) or if play would be pointless / lack commercial value (can't see anything).

it is a lot to take in. kind of hard to get it all in a short video like this. The best way to learn the game is to watch it with people who don't mind questions. Sit and watch 3 or 4 games and ask questions. Most people who watch the game don't fully understand it like a player does. I have never played the game other than games at the park when I was a kid. They talk about this type of defense or that kind of offensive lineup. But I do know basic rules, and understand what each player does. This is really all you need to know to enjoy the game. This is the sport I like to watch the most on TV. Your assumption on the games being longer is correct. The games are typically around 3 hours long with only an hour of actual playing time. The game has evolved to be a TV sport which allows a lot of advertising via commercials. One thing that was not mentioned in this video was the play clock and when the game clock is started and stopped. Anyway, I love my Seattle Seahawks and don't miss watching a game even in the bad years (although I may record it and watch it later).

The field is 100 yards long. A yard is 1.09 meters. At the end of the field is the area where the teams scores. It is called the called the end zone. It is 10 yards long, The games are much longer than 60 minutes because the clock is stopped if a pass thrown and not caught, if a player runs out of bounds while he has possession of the ball, or sometimes if the referees decides to stop the clock to make a ruling on a play. There are exceptions to the aforementioned but I don't want to overwhelm you with minor details.
