The "Girl with Hair Band" by Roy Lichtenstein gives us a look as if it had been taken by surprise. Is the "Girl with a Ribbon" a little sad? What is she thinking about? Perhaps it is in sorrow? Maybe it needs our help?

The painter Roy Lichtenstein has spoiled the image of desire for us anyway. Nothing about this girl, one sees at second glance, is real and genuine. Girl with Hair Ribbon, along with Drowning Girl, is considered as was of his best-known works, using oil and Magna paint on canvas.
Roy Fox Lichtenstein (1923-1997, Manhattan, New York City) was a US teacher and painter of Pop Art. Along with Andy Warhol, he was probably the best-known representative of this art movement. His breakthrough came in 1961 with the painting "Look Mickey", and his style became the industrial style of the printed comic. In his later works, however, Lichtenstein returned to his expressionist and surreal roots. In 1995, he was awarded the Kyoto Prize, one of the highest honours for services to science and art.

The Masterworks series is a treasure trove of art. Each ten-minute program focuses on an individual painting, with a rich visual survey accompanied by an authoritative voice-over commentary. The selection of works, from galleries on both sides of the Atlantic, covers a broad spectrum of art from the earliest European masterpieces to contemporary works, introducing the unfamiliar and rediscovering the well-loved.

The "flighty and coquettish girls". Yikes. Sexist much? A pity that the lecturer (unnamed, speaking with a voice of authority) does not acknowledge that Lichtenstein was not merely imitating the style of comic books, but actually directly plagiarizing them, with no attribution to the original artists he was ripping off.

James Greene is credited for narrating this and other Masterworks episodes. This was a German TV production from the mid 1980's so I'm sure the writing reflected the dated views of the time.
