Just out of curiosity (and feel free to tell me to google it if the question is inappropriate), how do you trigger a tic? Is it a personal thing, or is it something similar to other people’s? Or is it when you’re feeling strong emotions? (Sad, anxious, or even happy…) I’m mostly curious about how the girl in the post’s roommate could get her to say a specific word and not just trigger any random tic. Again, feel free to let me know if the question is inappropriate and I’ll just look it up myself, or just don’t reply at all. (I promise I’m not too lazy to google, it’s just that with these kinds of things the internet is absolutely filled with misinformation and I value hearing peoples personal experiences and opinions ❤)

@clarasnotlikely Anything can trigger a tic. My tics get worse when I'm cold, or when I'm stressed. Also other people can make movements that remind my brain of a specific tic, and trigger it. Same with vocal tics. Talking or thinking about a specific tic can make that tic happen. Pretty much anything can trigger tics, depends on the person.

@@clarasnotlikely I have a friend with tics so this is not a personal experience. We had a couple of bad friends that would trigger specific tics in him. The thing with this version of it is from my observation kind of saying the wrong thing in the worst possible moment (like he sees an animal and then tics and says "animalf*cker"). So I imagine you can trigger specific tics by repeating them yourself or something that is similar/in relation to it. That's how our 'friends' used to do it at least. Usually I think tics act up when stressed and in other uncomfortable situations.
@Tortle44443 ай бұрын
@clarasnotlikely I don't know if this is how it works for all people with tourettes, but some of my tics are triggered a lot by sharp noises (clapping, loud clicking, and sometimes beats in songs if they are very prominent). I have tics where I will clap or slap myself and those are especially triggered by sharp noises. If someone mimics my tics, that often triggers them to happen. Also they seem worse if I am cold.

So for someone to voluntarily trigger that loss of control over yourself for laughs... man, tales have been told of fairies and other monsters doing that kind of shit and forcing people to say stuff to put them in danger. Mood stabilizers help but the more stressed I am the worse it gets and unfortunately it makes me stressed so it can become a cycle and it makes me hate myself even more than I already do.

I think the most important thing is to try your hardest not to gaslight yourself into thinking things that aren't in your control are. If you look at someone else ticking and are empathetic to them, you should be telling yourself the same things. Aside from that, occasionally if I feel like this actively stimming in less harmful ways can be a way to avoid it - if you're saying things involuntarily then maybe you can replace it by singing, humming or telling a story (bonus points if it's shocking in a less triggering way like something gruesome)

My daughter has Tourette’s with coprolalia as well and honestly, this terrifies me that someone might do this to her. Someone purposefully triggering her tics in a way that might hurt her has never even occurred to me. I’m terrified for the guy in the story. Also- Daniel- your “Tourette’s ‘I have a gun’ loop” wouldn’t happen with Tourette’s. It’s very rare that a tic will be “socially appropriate” in a way that the tic makes sense, and you tend to tic the same handful of things over and over. So ticking “I have a gun” 25 times is likely, ticking 5 variations: “I have a gun”, “no seriously, I do”, “no really, I do have a gun” etc are extremely unlikely. This is what I’ve been taught through support groups, docs, and personal research. My kiddo has a particularly bad case (worse than anyone her docs/therapists have seen) and even with her case, she doesn’t do these things. The only time I’ve seen things like that happen has been the “fakers” on tiktok and stuff. Unfortunately.

Hi, person with Tourette's here (though if I'm being honest much more minor than what was described in the first post). I thought I'd give my take on the question regarding "loops" in Tourette's. While I could imagine something like that happening from my experience with my own tics and those others around me have had, I think the reasoning wouldn't be "the Tourette's correcting your genuine statement," but rather the fact that it keeps your brain thinking about it. Generally, among other things, a common trigger for tics in many people is the active mentioning of the Tourette's in the first place. With Coprolalia, I feel trying to correct yourself could lead to the urge to repeat it staying on your mind for longer. TLDR, there could definitely be cases of that kind of loop, but most often it'd probably not occur in that kind of way. If anyone with greater personal experience with Coprolalia or more severe Tourette's can fact check this, or share their experience with that sort of repetition through utterance, I'd be glad to edit this comment or at least hear the feedback. I should probably get back to watching the video instead of typing a Senior Thesis in the comments lol :)
@maxithink55273 ай бұрын
I have coprolalia, and you're right. Even just the fact that I know I'll say something bad makes me think about it more. Trying to respond to it to correct it has a tendency to make it repeat, even moreso if someone else adresses it. What she experiences in the first story is very relatable, in a way. I have never said the n-word but when I have a tic others find funny they often adress it and repeat it which makes it worse.

Nothing ruins a friendship faster than money. If you give a friend money, assume that it is a gift. If you want them to repay you, you're probably going to end up resenting them when they fail to do so. My friend was terrible at managing her money and i had to resist from offering to help her cover things (such as rent) because i KNEW she would never pay me back and she'd start to rely on me to pay for her all the time. She never asked me to lend her money which i am grateful for because i never had to tell her no to her face. But believe me watching her floundering to afford living because she didn't have the fortitude to hold down a job for more than a couple months was exhausting and I'm glad we're no longer friends so i don't have to spend energy worrying about her every day.

Last year my wife and I were in tight financial times and we tried to do grubhub, Amazon flex, Uber eats, etc. and all of them came back with a wait list and a message that there weren't opportunities for drivers. The nature of gig work: the companies gut the local economy and then remove jobs to "cut expenses" so that there are huge gaps in available employment. 3:13 my experiences with tourettes have been a lot less dangerous than this, but I have had several uncomfortable or scary moments. I have a tic where I wink, and have one where I do finger guns. I have had these happen together before and have winked and finger gunned at an older man who then thought I was hitting on him. It was not dangerous, but extremely awkward. Several other things like this have happened, but I'm glad I don't have worse tics like the one in this story

the toilet paper usage is very liekly ocd, I had a very bad few years of over use of toilet paper due to being severely traumatised and stressed out without getting any help my ocd spiralled into over use of toilet paper. i clogged my toilet daily back then, had a plugler next to my toilet always. Now my ocd is not toilet paper related, but I have to shower after every shit I take. i use cloves because of contamination ocd, I use a box of 200 gloves in a week ibs does not make ocd anymore fun

24:30 ish - Daniel talking about the danger yeah. My view on any sort of relationship is: "The moment you no longer feel safe, or feel threatened by someone you are with/around, is the moment it's done." Because if that trust is broken or was never there to begin with, it's not a good relationship.

For multiple feminine hygiene reasons often not doubling up toilet roll isn’t an option. I’ve learned to do specific folds to minimise how much I use but I know many wrap toilet roll round there hands multiple times every wipe and that adds up

I have contamination OCD and totally recognize the toilet paper thing as something I also did when I was in a really rough period. Wiping everything down with paper and alcohol, wrapping paper around my hands when I need to touch sth, placing things on top of paper to have them not touch "dirty" counters ect. Best I can suggest is to maybe get her a separate big trashcan so you don't have to worry about clogging the toilet and maybe some disinfectant so she can clean surfaces instead of needing to separate everything, cause sadly this isn't something she can just stop doing on command

i have tics that originally stemmed from anxiety and now i just have them. i thank the GODS daily that my tics are not verbal and only contain head twitching, hitting my head, knee twitching, small all over body convulsions if im standing, head shaking, or knocking on either myself or another object. they started when i was 14 years old and its been 7 years and i still have them. i also have BPD and my intrusive thoughts are extremely intense and i cannot imagine the trouble i would get into if i said those things out loud. i would genuinely be deemed a threat to myself and all others around me.

this has made me SO GLAD that most of my ticks are physical. It's a lot less dangerous for me if my head bobs weird than if I say "I have a gun". Mentioning intrusive thoughts right after though just filled me with the horror of the thought of ticking my intrusive thoughts because that would be HORRIFYING. It's bad enough that I have a hard time filtering them from coming out of my mouth bc of ADHD I can't imagine repeating them non-stop like I do my ticks. God.

About the toilet paper in the trash thing, I was vacationing in Greece one time and some Greek buildings have sewage systems that can’t handle all the toilet paper, so there are signs asking the user to dispose of the top in the trash instead. The Acropolis museum is one of those places.

19:50 Yes, in Europe if you were to go outside of the main city or to older buildings or towns that are heritage sites, they might have old plumbing that doesn’t like tp. I have experienced this in Portugal and Italy, but it would make you use less tp as you can actually fill a bin instead of just flushing it away. - An Irish man.

18:08 as someone with OCD, I do use probably 3-5 times as much toilet paper as the average person. I never really thought about how the two could be correlated, but thinking about it now it makes a lot of sense. 20:39 I also do have to wash my hands about 4 times, it’s gotten much better since a couple years ago I would spend 20+ minutes hunched over the sink, scrubbing them until they bled because I felt so filthy (edited to add the second time stamp)

Second story: I had a similar roommate once. I took her in while I was pregnant with my first child because her husband cheated on her with her other best friend (we were all in a friend group). We didnt charge her rent but she would complain about being "poor" while packages arrived every day and she had a new car in our driveway (she needed a car for work but she refused to buy used). We ended up needing to move because we couldn't keep up with our finances thanks to her. We were supporting a new child and a grown woman-child and it just got to be too much. She ended up moving in with my sister after me. They charged her $300 in rent and for some reason she couldn't figure out how to pay it. She even asked my sister if she could pay her $150 every two weeks because $300 was too big of a hit on her finances. She ended up going to Disney World during this time even though she magically couldn't pay rent for months prior. 🙄 She also got a dog while living there but would be gone 2-3 days at a time and expected my sister to care for it. My sister absolutely did but it obviously wasn't her responsibility. My sister eventually kicked her to the curb thankfully and our friendship was non-existent after all of this.

In researching how germophobia can present in patients with comorbid disorders, it wasn’t uncommon to see pre-emptive "scrapping" behaviors. Throwing away something reusable to prevent their spouse, children, roommates from having the opportunity to use it or cleaning it acter the patient uses it and hiding it away where no one can get to it (even fo extreme degrees). I wouldn’t be suprised if she has a bery specific phobia/obsession about bathroom germs and is compulsively unraveling the remainder of her toilet paper to render it unusable to the rest of the house. Imagine if she had simply dropped the roll in the trash and someone else in the house found it and put it back on the holder... Definitely worth taking a look around to see if she has any personal hygiene items in the room at all, or in a sealed bag, though the shared space might already have an unspoken agreement that everyone keeps their personal clutter out of the bathroom.

Flushing toilet paper when you live somewhere where's there's no sewage system is a no-no. It fills up the septic tank too fast and then you need to call the vacuum truck guys to empty it out.
