The thing about cats "always landing on their feet" is only half-myth. A falling cat instinctively tries to assume a belly-down position, and can assume it fram virtually any attitude in a matter of 1-2 seconds. They then pancake themselves like flying squirrels to maximize drag. The higher a cat balls fom, the more likely it is to survive.

Cats have great survival skills second almost to humans in terms of escaping near death experiences, so you see a lot of cats walk away from things that "should have killed them". They also have a habit of stalking things humans can't see. Amusingly, it's bad luck for a ship *not* to have a black cat.
