It was an interesting arc for Maya as a character but in my opinion it wasn't a good solution of the triangle. That whole story of Maya becoming Riley to protect her from Lucas wasn't good.

see this is what people dont understand. They arent hating maya for getting good grades or whatever. They see her and they understand that its not maya anymore she is riley. There is nothing wrong with her being smart or having pretty clothes or even liking lucas. The problem is that she changed herself completely loosing herself. Dont hate on Riley for being a good friend. Riley saw how lost Maya was even when she couldnt see it herself.

If you see a cat in that abstract painting, then Riley is right (shockingly enough :v) The art teacher says Maya is screaming. Yes, she is. Her soul is screaming to know what *it* is. You can hear it Maya's voice even, how shocked she was at what she made. She's becoming Riley to the point that her subconscious mind made something Riley would make.

That teacher, kind reminds me of Joseph Gordon Levitt. I was thinking if he may have been one of the actors that Joseph Gordon may have competed against for a role in an audition and was able to take it. He's a good actor though.

Apparently the meaning with this painting is: The world is against her and even she thinks there is nothing she can do about it. Note also Riley says the purple cat painting is a door. Because Maya is Riley's door to embracing the life Riley would be too scared to embrace. Maya helps Riley act in ways that let her learn and grow and live a little.

Z Simon People change people, bad things happen when you don’t know who you are. Fans watched Maya slowly morph into Riley and didn’t even notice or care until the writers pointed it out as a reason for Lucaya not to happen because it was never a ship but a lesson. Maya was still inside her, but she was not herself. Her subconscious was screaming “you are not Riley. Stop trying to be Riley. The world needs Maya too!” There is a distinct difference between “good” Maya when she is not herself during the non-triangle and hopeful Maya post triangle because she is finally herself but she has been changed by the people in her life to the point she no longer goes too far or believes hope is for suckers. The only “stupid” ones are the ones who refuse to accept the story when it isn’t what they want it to be.

It’s weird though because in girl meets ski lodge (I think that’s the episode I’m not entirely sure) Riley is the purple cat, Riley painted a purple cat. The purple cat seems to be edging onto maya just as with Riley. It’s there in the back of her head because she always thinks about Riley first.

I always hated the whole "Maya is becoming Riley" storyline. It never made sense. What does make sense is that the love triangle was putting Maya in a position of hurt, anger, and confusion. Maya drew a purple cat because she associates it with Riley and Riley is the one pressuring her to either give Lucas up or fully fight her for him. Riley is a point of stress and Maya feels lost in trying to speak her own mind when Riley won't let her. Can you really blame her for feeling lost when all Riley knows how to do is talk over people and tell them exactly how they're feeling?
