I have a theory about this. Girls generally aren't interested in nerdy guys, at least not a lot of the more attracted ones. However, in situations like this where they see a guy clearly bullying someone weaker, I believe a maternal instinct comes out in many women that make them want to defend the weaker guy, regardless of how he looks.

Depends. Being a nerd or a jock doesn't really determine much for success.
