On topic of starting pay, everyone need to take into consideration that not many countries have polytechnic tier. For them, a "complete education" is university. Our poy is better than many universities of other countries. Those who move onto uni from poly, usually have a few years of working experience before completing their uni course. So its not really an apple to apple comparison.

No leh, our polytechnic/JC tier is equivalent to their high school or trade school. It’s an apple to apple comparison, with the exception that guys in sg spend extra 2 years serving NS so the starting salary reflects that.

You want to know why SG guys behave in this manner? Try to date SG girls and you will discover most behave in this manner as well. Being 'petty and stingy' is a characteristic of most Singaporeans, not just the guys. This is a consequence of the relentless increasing cost of living over the years and the perennial worship of 5Cs so ingrained in our society.

Australia does have a decent size financial market. The Australia securities market cap is 2-3 times the size of Singapore's, and there are high paying jobs in both finance and tech in Australia - albeit a lot of which are in commodities. From a financial sector as a % to GDP perspective, they are also pretty close at 8 vs 10%. Australia also ranks higher on a median income level - before tax but Singapore fairs higher for the top 10% income taxable at almost 190k vs 130k in Australia.
