The German march song was written for tanks. The American march song was written for paratroopers(including their black humor). The British march song was written for soldiers. The Russian folk song was written for a girl. . . . . . . . . This French march song was written for ONIONS. Great work France. Great work indeed. (Though I like onions too)

Well, in many places of France our soldiers used to bite a raw onion upon plaiding allegiance to the flag, a kind of ritual if you like. This song is a reminder of the moment they vowed to fight and die for the state and the people, and also a gesture of defiance... When everything was lost and they were to die whithout hope of being rescued, singing this absurd piece of song was like a last laugh in the face of their opponents and death itself. A sort of black humor and proud-ness upon destiny. More specifically, the song was written under Napoleon Bonaparte and was sang along the first battles againts the Austrian Empire. It's also a reminder of times of hunger, for the only meal many soldiers could hope for in wars of attrition and burned lands was often fried onions. It's not surprising the Foreign Legion keep the song in its traditions, being the most tough soldiers. Nowadays it's not so popular, kinda lost in time over other songs and traditions, but back in time this was the unofficial anthem of french soldiers upon the dreadiest hours of our history. Tanks, fellow soldiers and girls were, after all, already lost forever for those who sang it in the last moments... but not defiance and nostalgy yet. So yeah, it makes us smile and maybe laugh... but for those who knows the history, great work indeed :)

@@林于程-f1u You are very welcome. Oh, did you know that in these same napoleonic wars, a marechal of france (it's like a prince-general) take a very important bridge to the austrians... just by pretending the war was over and they had to surrender according to the terms of truce ? Oh, and the true last samurai was not american, but a french officer ! We have quite a lot of good stories ^^

@@jango1053 Marechal of France? Do you mean Marshal of France? We once had similar rank(Generalissimo or General Special Class, in Chinese is 特級上將. seems like this rank is higher than Five-star General in the us military. ) in our military rank system, and we don't use it since 2000. Pretended like the war is over to take the bridge? Would you tell this story? I guess the true last samurai you said is Jules Brunet, right? The armed force of France, in my opinion, established many things that shaped the modern warfare. The most famous example is FT-17. Our BF1 players usually call it "the little duck".
@jango1053
@jango1053 5 жыл бұрын
@@林于程-f1u Ahah the little duck, really ? It's quite a cute name :) So you are chinese ? Your country has an even greater military tradition and history than mine, by long shot. I'm french, and my english is quite bad so i apologise ^^' Yes, Jules Brunet was the true last samurai, sorry for the americans :p And yes, Marechal is quite like Marshall, except that in the french military its only a title, not an official rank per se. Although its often given to the highest officer at the time... and it was a true rank per se under Napoleon. Actually, Marechal de France (or Great Admiral for the french navy officers) is a dignity of the state, and can be gifted to any military officer commanding for our country... but it's really rare, an officer have to be at least a general or/and defended successfully the state against an overwhelming, durable or dire menace... like Pétain against the germany, you see. And we didnt have a living marechal in more than half a century. Yeah, so the Bridge of Tabor was held by the Austrians, protecting Vienna. The lieutenant in charge of the bridge was under order by Feldmarschalleutnant Auersperg to blow up everything, the whole three bridges one after another, if the frenchs were to assault it, okay ? Then, two Marechaux of France - and at this time, under Napoleon, being a Marechal was not only being a super-general but also a "prince" of France - had an idea. Their names were Lannes and Murat. So these two uber-important soldiers and politicians of the Napoleonian Empire just casually walked to the bridge with nothing else than a handful of soldiers and a white flag, and talk to the austrians - who were, like, "dude if you take only one step further i blow the kegs of poweder and we all die". And just like that, they pretended that the war was over, an armistice being signed and all, and the austrians were "dude, wtf ?". And while the marshalls openly lied and demanded the bridge to be handed over them, the french army was closing, stealthly at first, then openly but casually, not in battle mode, like on a parade... and the austrian lieutenant was puzzled, didnt know what to do. And even when the feldlmarshalllieutenant of the austrian came back, all he could do was seeing the french army right on the bridges, and no one was firing, and the french marshalls even get to silenced an austrian officer who didnt believed their lies by talking to his superior and saying something like "do the austrians officers let a soldier talk to them like that ?" and ordered to the austrians soldiers to not open fire, even if they didnt have authority over them... And so, the austrians gave up the bridges, and moments later there was no question of armistice any more and they were all taken prisonners of the french army, and Napoleon had a good laugh for weeks :D - and the poor feldmarshall lieutenant was tried and shot for incompetence... if you want to read it properly, and also an another french napoleonic bluff in the same war, and ten others great bluffs in military history, here is a link to an excellent article : historycollection.co/12-greatest-military-bluffs-history/4/ have fun :)

This song has a terrible untold meaning, when the French went to fight during the Napoleonic wars they knew that they were going to lose comrades in the fighting and the custom was that they bite into a raw onion to give themselves strength and courage, as in the song says "a single onion turns us into a lion". So as during the last battles to bite into an onion remind the soldiers that it may be the last onion he shares with his friends and brothers in arms and that he will join the lions who died in battle. And of course why the onion? Because it grows very quickly and during almost most of the seasons in just 30 days it was edible the soldiers planted it regularly during the campaigns, so most of the time there was only onions to eat with a little bread.

Cutie Marxist The French have thicker armour in 1940 but with a pathetic main cannon and odd placement of an odd and ineffective 75 at the side of char b1
@monyclair5357
@monyclair5357 6 жыл бұрын
In 1940 the 75 mm howitzer was better than any other tank canon used. Same for the 47 mm. But yeah, one year after in a war with many technologies improvement in tank construction, it was over. And the french logic to place the chief in a sigle turret without loader and gunner wasnt a good idea. But you should take a look at the battle of Stonne to understand what kind of beast is the B1 bis.
@machaiping
@machaiping 6 жыл бұрын
Char B1 has a lot of flaws off-battlefield that make them extremely impractical, but unfortunately, no games can portray this realistically. For example; the hull-mount howitzer has only 1 degree traverse which required B1 to install specialized steering system to make it able to shoot anything with acceptable accuracy. However said steering gears is extremely complex and a nightmare to maintain. And then there's the very intensive-maintenance of its breakdown-prone vertical volute spring suspension on top of it. Simulating any of these realistically will guarantee a lot of rage quits from playerbase, so no game designers will ever put it in, ever. Except maybe Simulation for Army to train their crews on.
@thekenjistream8683
@thekenjistream8683 6 жыл бұрын
Talking about realism when you know nothing about the tank. The 75mm was never made for tank to tank combat. It is an artillery piece made to strike bunkers and infantry positions. The 47mm is the AT gun. And it could destroy any German tank on its way while the Germans couldn't even penetrate the armor of the B1. Now why 1 man turret ? Easy. Manpower. After WW1 France couldn't afford an another war and so it couldn't have many crews for tanks. Plus France was designing a turret for 2 men but Petain made France surrender before the turret could be produced. Finally the tank wasn't hard to maintain. The problem was training.
@machaiping
@machaiping 6 жыл бұрын
+TheKenjiStream I don't think it work like that. B1's thick armor was rendered weaker than they should be due to using rivets instead of welding in construction. Even if the shot didn't penetrate the impact could snap the rivet off and send the thing ricocheting inside the tank at the speed of bullets, injuring or killing the crews which is just the same as enemy's shell penetrating the armor anyway. For manpower argument; B1 has Commander who has to direct his tank crews, observe battlefield, communicate with other tank, picking target, turning, loading and firing turret gun. Radioman whose job is only to relay message between Commanders. Driver who has double duty of aiming and firing the hull-mounted howitzer, and Loader whose job is loading only said howitzer. Meanwhile, Modern MBT has Commander do the commanding his crews, observe the battlefield, and communicate with other tanks, Gunner who do the aiming and shooting, Loader who load the main gun, and Driver whose job is just drive the tank. I'll leave you to decide which duty distribution make more sense - mind you, both tanks has the same number of crew, so manpower is not an excuse here.

It's sound more like "quand il est bon". But honnestly, it's hard, even for a native, and i guess both can be accepted. To determine this, watch out for the "liaison" (i don't know if english speakers have same rule). If it was "car il est bon", we should listen "car r'il est bon", but we have here "t'il est bon", so it's "quand" ("quand t'il est bon").

If I may, your lyrics are somewhat incorrect. There is no mention of anyone named 'Carl' in the song, and no one sais 'Or not', either. The correct version would be : "I love onion fried in oil, I love onion, it's so tasty . I love onion fried in oil, I love onion, I love onion . In step, comrades, in step, comrades, In step, in step, in step . In step, comrades, in step, comrades, In step, in step, in step." Source : Wikipedia (love it or hate it, they're right, and I know what I'm talking about, since I'm French myself)

There is a french team in Girls und Panzer: Das Finale, or season two coming out in March. The french school is based on the school shown in the spin-off manga Ribbon Warrior called BC Freedom High School themed around Free France and Vichy France. Those who watched it at theatres report they sing this song at one point.
