Girma Negash and the Either/Orchestra play "Yene Hassab" in Addis Ababa, 2011

Girma Negash sings Yene Hassab in front of a big band for the first time in half a century, with special guest Dawit Frey on clarinet.
Girma was one of the featured singers with the Haile Selassie Theater Orchestra in Addis Ababa in the 1960s, when the band was led by Nerses Nalbandian.
In 2011, the Either/Orchestra traveled to Addis to revive Nalbandian's arrangements in their original format, and were fortunate to find Girma ready and able to reprise this haunting song.
This is an excerpt from the first of two concerts of this music, May 13, 2011 in the courtyard of the Alliance Ethio-Francaise.

Nerses Nalbandian,"Stateless Armenian Ethiopian" dubbed Ethiopian music,and nightclubs in ADDIS back from 1950- to early 1970s, he takes over after his uncle retiring in 1949 as the head of the major musical institutions of the country in Addis Ababa. In particular, Nalbandyan conducts the orchestra of the Imperial Guard, the Police Orchestra, the Municipal Orchestra of Addis Ababa (where he is a professor in 1946), the orchestra of Hayle-Selassie Theatre (directed by Franz Zelwecker.Austro-German) and the music schools of Nazret & Yared. A great composer and part of ethiopian music history. Great guy!!

What a reminder of those bygone tmes! Mr Girma himself performing again. But the works of the great Nerses are rarely heard these days. I really wonder if his musical works with the Haile Sellasie Theater Orchestra have survived. It seems there is a conspiracy of some kind to suppress and make his music unavailable as many of my efforts to get them have been frustrated. As a child growing then his music makes part of my early memory of life and events in those times. I pray I may get them some day.
