Matt, so awesome to see all this finally come together; super stoked you got use out of the dataset! 🙌🏼 Very interesting about the demand for Excel vs. Python; I think you are on to something with it shifting in the future! Thanks for the shoutout 🎉

As a Data Science master's holder (working too on a grad Stats certificate), I am interested in the application of Statistics & Machine Learning to geospatial data. It only makes sense that Python and SQL are important in that field. What's surprising about the results of this vid is the relative unimportance of what Data Scientists bring to the table, that is, higher level mathematical skills for description, inference and prediction. This is the niche that interests me, Geospatial Data Science which calls for knowing Stats and ML.
@MattForrest11 ай бұрын
There definitely is an application there in spatial data science. It’s still growing and on the true applied data science side like you mention there is demand although sometimes the title can broadly apply to geospatial analytics with Python which makes it hard to differentiate between the roles.

I have no degree, some college classes, but mostly self-taught. Telecom has always traditionally been CAD based maps. But that is transitioning. I got in right as the company I work for was transitioning, they did not care about the lack of a degree, they cared more about the fact I knew even what GIS is. Problem is, if I get laid off for some reason, I'm kinda screwed.

Hey Matt! Big fan, another great video. Great work on the analysis. Just wanted to jump in and agree with a previous comment that it does come off as slightly disingenuous to not name ESRI or ArcGIS specifically by name. I am a huge open-source fan/advocate and would love the GIS community to become more holistic in its software usage, but not naming the currently most widely used GIS platform is a lil odd. Thanks again for all the time and effort you put into your videos and content!
@pythonGIS Жыл бұрын
@ericsamson731 You say, "It does come off as slightly disingenuous to NOT name ESRI or ArcGIS specifically by name." I'm not against ESRI and don't think that it has to be an "either - or" decision when it comes to FOSS4G and proprietary. In fact, I'm incredibly grateful for the fact that I probably wouldn't have studied GIS if it weren't for them. But I think times change and they already have enough videos shouting out for them.
@MattForrest11 ай бұрын
Hey so the main reason I don’t is that I haven’t used Esri tools since college so I don’t have the experience to speak to them apart from broad strokes. Of course they play a large role in GIS but the reason I started making these videos was that I didn’t see any content that spoke to the experience I have had in the industry and that seemed like a big gap.

For the records that had salary information, did you do a query on which states and/or localities had said data? The salaries sound kind of high to me, and they don't really pass the smell test. I have to wonder if places with salary transparency laws, like California, might also happen to have a high cost-of-living, which will skew the salary data.

I think that more and more of the generative AI models, instead of being trained on EVERYTHING like ChatGPT is, will be applied to specific use cases and data. So think about a project you are working on, what if your user could ask a question of your data just like ChatGPT? A database is a great place to store this data to train a model for a use case just like this.

How can you have an honest video about job skills for GIS and never use the terms ArcGIS or ESRI? The vast majority of geospatial jobs I've seen mention ArcGIS specifically. I'm starting to suspect this channel is just a shill for the company he works for and is probably being funded by CARTO.
@MattForrest Жыл бұрын
So those tools you mentioned are bucketed into the "Traditional GIS" category you see in the video, regardless of who makes them. And as you can see that is still the top category in the analysis results! And no, all opinions are my own!
