Albrecht - Sergei Polunin
Giselle - Natalia Osipova
Performance Notes: Milan 2015
Synopsis:
Act I
The ballet opens on a sunny fall morning in the Rhineland. Duke Albrecht, a young nobleman, has fallen in love with a shy, beautiful peasant girl, Giselle, despite being betrothed to Bathilde, the daughter of the Duke of Courtland. Albrecht disguises himself as a humble villager called "Loys" in order to court the enchanting and innocent Giselle, who knows nothing of his true identity. Albrecht hides his fine attire, hunting horn, and sword before coaxing Giselle out of her house.
Hilarion, a local gamekeeper, is also in love with Giselle and highly suspicious of the newcomer. He tries to convince the naive Giselle that her beau cannot be trusted, but she ignores his warnings. Giselle's mother, Berthe, is very protective of her daughter, as Giselle has a weak heart and delicate health.
A party of noblemen seeking refreshment arrive in the village, Albrecht's betrothed, Bathilde, among them. Albrecht hurries away, knowing he would be recognized and greeted by Bathilde, exposing him as a nobleman. The villagers welcome the party, offer them drinks, and perform dances. Bathilde is charmed with Giselle's sweet and demure nature, not knowing of her relationship with Albrecht.
Albrecht emerges again to dance with Giselle. Hilarion interrupts. He has discovered Albrecht's finely made sword and presents it as proof that the lovesick peasant boy is really a nobleman who is promised to another woman. Using Albrecht's hunting horn, Hilarion calls back the party of noblemen. Albrecht has no time to hide and has no choice but to greet Bathilde as his betrothed. All are shocked by the revelation, but none more than Giselle, who becomes inconsolable when faced with her lover's deception. Knowing that they can never be together, Giselle flies into a mad fit of grief in which all the tender moments she shared with "Loys" flash before her eyes. She begins to dance wildly and erratically, ultimately causing her weak heart to give out. She collapses before dying in Albrecht's arms. The two men turn on each other in rage before Albrecht flees in misery. The curtain closes as Berthe weeps over her daughter's body.
Act II
Mourning Giselle, Albrecht lays flowers on her grave, weeping with guilt. Her spirit appears. Albrecht begs her forgiveness. She forgives him, but he is accosted by the Wilis, spirits of maidens betrayed by their lovers. The Wilis haunt the forest at night and take revenge on any man they find, forcing him to dance until lifeless from exhaustion. The power of Giselle's love stops the Wilis' magic and spares his life. Giselle returns to her grave to rest in peace.

Of great beauty Natalia Osipova , while dancing, creates a work on stage . Even the best contemporary dancers cannot compete with her, neither in dancing nor in appearance on stage. She is the only on that is so perfect.

Thank you so much, dear Pam for uploading this beautifully video. Sergei is perfect as he ever is and has so much power and elegance.... this is breathtaking. But i have to say a few things about Natalia. In my opinion she really is a wonderful ballet dancer, so i do not understand why she becomes more and more too artificial in her dancing. Instead of her former clearence a lot of her moves are fast and faster and her jumps higher and higher but she lacks to do them clear. For example in the first act when she does one of her solos in front of barthilde or in the second act in the pas de deux. And her arm are sloppy and very slow too slow for my favour because for sure is has to be slow but it is too much and it is a pitty because she does not need to do those things she is a wonderful dancer. Sometimes her feet are not stretched because she wants to show how fast she is but looses with this all the facettes that giselle offers a dancer to show. I am very excited what you will think if my criticism, Pam and maybe the other commenter. Thank you again, Pam and go on like you do, you do a great job!!!!!

Dear Giselle, great comment! I agree with you very much so. I adore Natalia so much... I first must say that. To say anything against her seems almost sacrilegious HOWEVER, I cannot disagree with your assessment. While her portrayal of "dead" Giselle is spot on (I don't know anyone who does the "zombie-like, not quite there, ghostly apparition thing any better), her living Giselle makes me sometimes wonder exactly what her motivation or character mindset is. It's not wrong or flawed, just curious. It sometimes appears that living Giselle is already partly dead (the slow arms). As far as her technique, I have a theory... I think Natalia has foot problems?? I myself have similarly shaped feet and over the years, my pointe work has changed and suffered and caused me to alter my dancing somewhat. I'm talking about the bunions and the widening of the toe end of her (my) feet. In my case, surgery is not an option, and I'm sure she probably feels the same way. Our feet are our instruments and in my mind, I'd rather deal with it than risk any permanent alteration (mistake) until it becomes absolutely, ABSOLUTELY necessary to carry on. Lastly, thank you so much for watching and taking the time to write. I'm so glad you enjoy my work. I don't intend on stopping any time soon. As my physical ability to dance leaves me, I find more and more satisfaction in "choreographing" and "dancing" via pixels!!

I think Natasha is one of the best ballerinas these days...and her partnership whith Polunin is awesome...however, I dont like this choreography..Giselle is too " alive" and Albrecth' s jumps are just not justified...Alonso's version is way closer to the esence of the tale they are telling

Too bad it’s an amateur filming. The camera is noisy, it’s out of focus and wobbly most of the time. And the sound is bad too.
