I took Giselle the GSA to the Chevronic Centre to try and cure a hydraulic leak. We ended up fixing a fair bit more! Includes an explanation of how the rear suspenion works, diagnosis of a running issue and a chat with owner Rob Moss about how Chevronics came to be.

Love this video as watching an expert at work is heartwarming. What Ian is to car reviews Rob is to Citroen mechanics! Giselle feels like a car worth getting expert care and attention on as it's a car way beyond ordinary and one I hope Ian keeps for as long as possible. Great stuff as always Ian 🙂

Really interesting, Ian. Glad Giselle is getting the attention she deserves. It is great to see a mechanic's shop that obviously cares about the work they do. Lovely to see a shop owner who truly loves the cars he cares for. Owning an old car does bring the challenge of finding a good shop.

Looking forward to the R4 test. I had a 4f6 van I treated horribly, as had the two previous owners (a farm and a gamekeeper). My best memory of it was coming across a Golf GTi one night stuck in a flood almost to the top of its wheels. I carefully pulled it out backwards with the f6 and we got the VW running. I told the driver how to detour round the flood, and then to his horror and amazement, drove my van through the water, well over the headlights, and carried on my merry way! Our R4 GTL car was not subjected to quite such abuse, but they were/are great cars.

Our local retired brickie drove a beige R4 until around 2010, lugging around cement mixers and materials. He then replaced it with a less spectacular but also rare Mazda Demio that he still drives. R4s are lovely classics but my heart still belongs to the 2CV with its ancient shape and lovely two-pot engine. I've never owned or driven one, only gotten a ride in one when I was very little and 2CVs were still everyday bangers, but I love them! One of my mum's friends drove one into the very early 90s, replaced by a super-bland red MK2 Golf. Her husband, a doctor, apparently switched straight from a 2CV to a BMW :-D The other 2CV I remember very well was a red and black Charleston, owned by a lady who drove it to Italy and back several times every summer, until it got too rusty in the late 90s. And an elderly lady who lives somewhere nearby had a white and dark blue 2CV, the design with waves on the doors. At one point she had it resprayed plain white, which was a pity but probably gave the car another ten years of life. I grew up in a kind of posh neighbourhood but for some reason we always had a few 2CVs floating around.

After a rough day at work this was just what I needed to recharge. Rob's business reminded me of the Matra specialist I used to bring the Murena when I drove one, remanufacturing parts that were discontinued by Peugeot-Talbot and knowing his way all around the car and its quirks. It is so good to see someone trying to keep those old Citroëns on the road, fixing Giselle in such a way you start liking to drive it again.

Looking forward to the R4 test! I have fond memories from over 40 years back of repeatedly solo push-starting one (+driver) in Paris on a day sightseeing tour as it's battery was flat. Basically, every time we stopped to 'faire du tourisme', I had to push-start the car back to life later, although slopes helped in places.

Seeing that BX estate though, god it makes my heart sink, it reminds me of my 1.9 TGD Meteor estate (J889 XAK), which I've harped on enough about before but it's the only car I've ever actually owned, same issue, timing belt had snapped, probably could have been revived with a new one and a re-timing given the XUD is a non-interference valve engine from memory, but my BX, rust, lots of it (and the doors were akin to that D, holding on with luck!), and it was the era where they were fifty quid bangers, yet mine was free from a guy who had a (working!!) turbo diesel BX saloon which he bought for £50!!! I'd give that one a home, but, the likelihood of me ever driving is low, so, it'd be sat unused, just tinkered with and poked at rather than used...

Everything from the amazing dash to the stunning looks make this car amazingly timeless to me! I remember my father used to own an old Peugeot 505 Estate from 1982 and it was, even at that time when I was around 8 years old, really old but man I loved that old car! He recently got his first Citroen too and even though it's a relatively modern example it was saved from the scrap yard as the previous owner wanted nothing to do with it and the insurance company had repaired it to full legality. It's a stunning looking car too. Awesome stuff Ian! :D

Having spent her life pottering around the village of St Victor on the Ardèche plateau she has since been to Krakow and Fatima in Portugal. She’s now in semi retirement in Noirmoutier Island in Western France and passed her contrôle technique (MOT) this summer so she’s good for another 5 years.
