A beautiful rendering by Hariharan
Poet Sri Jayadeva was born in 11th century in Bindu Bilva village near Puri Jagannath Temple in Orissa. His wife Padmavati, was an accomplished temple dancer. He was very much influenced by the culture and devotion of Vaishnava Brahmanas. His magnum opus "Gita Govinda' is one of the most popular compositions in Sanskrit language, describing the divine love of Radha and Krishna.
Radharani is the spiritual energy of Krishna..and this sixth poem describes the first meeting of Radha and Krishna.
The tingling of the girdle chains of Radha symbolises the experience of spiritual bliss in a mystical manner declaring that Krishna is the mind born joy and the cause of the tingling
Affirming that Kesi (Krishna) is generous with his love it reminds all that seeking divine deliverance is the route to everlasting joy.
Through our devotion to Krishna and Radha we can access that inner joy unparalled to any material happiness that is transcient.
English Translation by Ramesh Krishnakumar August 2014

It's amazing how the love between two people was celebrated centuries back in our country. If u go by lines, it's a sensuous flow of love in all aspects including explicit physical love making. Sad we have gone back miles under Victorian morality.

Humann 67.....this could be at another plane also ....not about physical and carnal bliss .... but about the divine Krishna causing an exhilarating spiritual bliss that comforts a heavy heart and lightens the soul...I think the expressions do not point to a kamasutra like episode only... The beginning is intriguing and possibly the hint.... just a food for thought .....certainly sensuality was not taboo nor are these great poetry all about amorous indulgences of a raunchy god figure many western Indologists have interpreted it to represent possibly in the light of Victorian morality !

@@nrkkvsnlcom while keeping your views in highest regards and since u have given thoughts in depth... I had written about love at all levels including physical love. Y would there be a need to shy away from physical love at all, making it a taboo ? Moreover Krishna was more human than any other gods. If you dissect the lines for meaning..for eg.. from 3.43...."nakha likhita ghana sthana bhaaram "....it speaks about the nailmarks on the breasts. Similar description and beautiful verses of love making is evident through out. The actual meaning is more relatable rather looking around for unearthly pure spiritual bliss.

@@humann6739 my translation for that stanza is shlatha-kusuma kula-kuntalaya, nakaha-likhita-ghana-stana-bharam (Krishnam, sakhi he) ||5|| …like removing withered flowers on tousled hair…… with his nails he scrapes out the heavy burden in the heart… … Further there is no reference to "breasts" The whole context of this Astapathi is a narration by Radha to gopis about how when she was secluded, lonely and fearful, Krishna generously supported The other stanza ( bosom can also mean a heavy heart when in distress and fearful Radha Girdle chains are supposed to give joy to all other human beings mukhara-vishru khala-mekhalaya, sa kucha graha-chumbana-danam (Krishnam, sakhi he) ||6|| …causing the renowned tingling of my girdle chains ……he held me by my bosom gifting his kisses …. rati-sukha-samaya-raslasaya, dara-mukulita-nayana-sarojam | …those were periods of loving blissful nectar ……his lotus like eyes were like half closed buds ….

@@nrkkvsnlcom the word 'sthana' is mentioned in many holy books including sahasranamaas. I don't think it was 'heart' anywhere. And 'ratisukha ' is definitely not divine eternal bliss rather we all know it is physical love . Don't understand why everything has to be about divine eternal bliss! It is... Beautiful and sensuous pure love of Radha to her Krishna...which definitely includes the worldly physical love making ...there is nothing wrong rather it makes the ashtapathi a marvelous scripture depicting pure love without inhibitions...

Humann 67 ....certainly if you want to interpret it as sex, sensual , breast etc by all means ... all I wanted to point out there can be alternate point.... removing the burden from the heart is compared to removing the discomfort of lice from hair... I wonder what nail marks may means...any way thanks for responding ....asthapadhis are chanted in many temples too

The translation has been sanitized, as many have said in the comments. I see this poem not as about Krishna being a sex-crazed man, but as a God who accepts joyfully whatever his devotees offer him, including their bodies for physical pleasure. Thus by giving to and taking pleasure from the Gopi, he becomes her supreme husband.

You mean I did not mention breast and clawing with nails and portraying Krishna as sex crazy? I have translated almost 25 asthapathis and created a playlist too . I am almost certain that Jayadev’s poetic imagery is so artistic that he uses the concept of a heavy heart as throbbing bosom and kisses as calming actions even caressing the feet on a newly sprouted lotus leaf ... I did not do any sanitization, there are 20 other translations for you to study and evaluate the cause of your disturbance !
