A bit of History: "Wind Beneath My Wings" (sometimes titled "The Wind Beneath My Wings" and "Hero") is a song written in 1982 by Jeff Silbar and Larry Henley. The song was first recorded by Kamahl in 1982 for a country and western album he was recording. Kamahl talked about being the first to record the song in an appearance on Australian TV show Spicks and Specks but stated it was not commercially released because it was felt he did not suit the country and western style. Instead, Roger Whittaker recorded the song, as well as Sheena Easton and Lee Greenwood. The song appeared shortly thereafter in charted versions by Colleen Hewett (1982), Lou Rawls (1983), Gladys Knight & the Pips (1983), and Gary Morris (1983). The highest-charting version of the song to date was recorded in 1988 by singer and actress Bette Midler for the soundtrack to the film Beaches. This version was released as a single in early 1989, spent one week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in June 1989, and won Grammy Awards for both Record of the Year and Song of the Year in February 1990. On October 24, 1991, Midler's single was also certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America for shipment of one million copies in the United States. In 2004 Midler's version finished at No. 44 in AFI's 100 Years...100 Songs survey of top tunes in American cinema. Perry Como recorded the song for his final studio album Today, released by RCA Records in 1987. Como wanted "Wind Beneath My Wings" released as a single, but RCA refused; Como was reportedly so angry, he vowed to never record for RCA Records ever again. In a 2002 UK poll, "Wind Beneath My Wings" was found to be the most-played song at British funerals. While I love Bette's version of this song, my favorite version is by Gary Morris: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hn63iHepopJglbc I believe that Gary has the best voice in country music history, and his version of this song is hauntingly beautiful. His voice is so good that he was cast as the lead in Broadway's "Les Miserable". The only other country singer to make that leap is Linda Ronstadt. I'm including the link to Gary's performance of one of the best songs in Les Mis, "Bring Him Home": kzbin.info/www/bejne/hJPQh3ScjrmYgdE Remember when you are listening to his beautiful version of this iconic song, this is a country western singer. It will blow your mind. As always, I love you Gitana! And it looks like 20K is right around the corner. Well deserved! 😊💕

I don't understand why we feel a need to apologize when we cry--it's one of the greatest parts of being human, if you ask me. Massive respect for posting this, because most people are not as emotionally open as this, and it's nice to see. More of us need to break open our emotional shell.

Bette Middler sang this in Yankee Stadium [and the video is on KZbin] live, for the 2001 9/11 memorial service to family and survivors and dozens of dignitaries as part of an "official" memorial service for the victims. So thousands cried to Bette singing this live, broadcast around the nation if not the world.

This songs means a lot to me, my great gran couldn’t walk for way over 30 years and she was stubborn…always determined to do things herself…when she passed I knew it was her time deep down but she was my best friend…we spoke everyday about random rubbish and had a laugh. She was 88 when she died and that was a while ago now..but I have been lucky to be round my great grandparents a lot. Having epilepsy…she taught me the true spirit of carrying on…as well as my mum who suffers from MS. Also my very close friend passed away aged 20, at school she had cancer she came in and her beautiful ginger hair was gone but being the good friends we was to her we continued and asked her how she was and how weekend was and stuff…her dad always thanked me for that…made her feel normal. Also my other work colleague could hear voices in head…I knew about it and I tried to talk to her a lot then covid hit and she was alone and she killed herself….she was a natural beauty…the full streets lined for her in lockdown and I was so pleased she got the best send off possible

There is no reason to apologize for crying ever. Showing your emotions is a beautiful thing. The first time I heard this was in the movie and I cried like a baby but loved the movie and the song but now much harder every time I hear it because my best friend of nearly 40 years passed from an inoperative brain tumor and every time I hear this song now I cry because she was the wind beneath my wings and for a while I was so lost without her and still have my bad day. But sweetie never apologize for feeling. I loved your reaction to this thank you.

This is dedicated from me to my beloved sister. We had so much pain when we were kids, and it was super tough. My sister is two years older than me, and six years older than our brother. She cared for US when our mother was unable to. And she was a CHILD. We’re very different people, who took different life paths; and we’ve had our disagreements in the past. I married my best friend, the finest man ever (38 years ago); but my sister is always my hero. Forever, I hope she always knows and hears the lyrics “I’d be nothing without you”; because it’s forever true. Thank you, S., for believing in me, believing in J. (our brother), and believing in US. I’m forever in your debt.

Her best friend happened to be at Bette's house when Bette recv'd the sheet music and her bestie told Bette that if she didn't record this song, there friendship was over....The rest is history...Please listen to country music star, Gary Morris's version of ' wind beneath my wings'....You will be amazed at how good his version is.....

I have loved this song since he came out. As of seven and half yrs ago, my Dad was murdered. He was shot twice by a rifle. They said it was suicide. But, I took a copy of the autopsy report to three other coroner's in a different state in three different counties and they all said that the findings were absolutely impossible! The first shot (with the trajectory of the bullet) would have paralyzed him! The second one was a "kill shot" . Excuse my bluntness my right in the middle of his forehead! So; when I feel like I can't go through a situation without hearing his voice and his sage advice, I listened to this song! I'm so sorry you were sad. I was crying along with you. Much love to you and Donovan and your family love. ❤😘❤

In 1989 I was 11 year's old and was watching TV one day with my dad. We were flipping through the channels when we came across the very beginning of Beaches on either HBO or Showtime. We sat there together and watched the entire movie without speaking a word or getting up to even go to the bathroom. When it was over we both had shed some tears. This song and that movie mean so much to me and I'm eternally grateful for having happened to have come across it all those years ago. I am a straight guy and feel no embarrassment admitting this.

Plato once said “Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination and life to everything.” ― Plato. I sing as a hobby and I have had people in an audience with big smiles on their faces sat next to people who are crying and hurting. If we all liked the same things the world would be a very boring place to live. A woman came up to me at the end of a show once and apologised for crying after I’d sang music of the night from the Phantom of the opera. She explained that it was her husband’s favourite song and he had past two weeks before the show. She said she wasn’t crying because she was sad that her husband had suddenly past but she was crying because she could remember all the good times they had shared together and that she would have no more with him. I told her that’s why memories are so good. We can recall them whenever we want to to lift our hearts and bring us joy and that way she could be with her husband again whenever she wanted. Music is pain, joy, good, bad, right, wrong and means many different things to so many people. If there was no music where would we all be how would we express emotion. Keep doing what you do and don’t ever be ashamed of showing how you feel about music. It shows your soul it shows we are all human. X

Study on tears revealed that sad tears have a different chemical make up than happy tears. So there is something in sad tears that our body needs to get rid of. So no shame in crying, your body is just doing its job! Keep up the honesty and let the music take you where you need to go. And so nice of Donavan to come and console you. You got one of the good guys!

wow I never expected to ever hear this again. Powerful reaction and I had a similar punch to the gut memory reaction...its been 30 odd years since I saw that movie - I was a snotty geeky student in Swansea university pretending to be doing an english degree and media studies course. truth was I was emotionally isolated and screwed up inside..there was a girl (isnt there always) who I treated to a movie every week (I wont call her my girlfriend..it was a long time before I had a proper 'relationship' but she was the closest I had to a true friend during that time) Beaches waso ne of the last things we watched together..she went home for a holiday a few weeks later and died in a car accident a few days before she was due to come back to Wales thats the first time Ive ever written those words and its...my fingers are shaking and thats from something well over half my life back. Had to stop..took me about 20 minutes to continue from that last sentence...almost deleted this whole post as its so personal... ..but had to keep it in to explain why I want to thank you for this...'not all tears are bad' you said and aint that the truth...IM sorry if Im not making much sense but I feel so strangely peaceful now having given some 'vent' to that memory...She really was a wind beneath my wings during a time that I very nearly became lost ...and thanks to her I found myself and have had a pretty darn good life..kids and now a granddaddy of one hell of a smart little toddler. sorry Im just drivelling on and meandering a lot and probably pointlessly ...but thanks for reacting to this ..thanks for your oh so powerfully emotional reaction...its been real for me too as you can see. beautiful song....bittersweet tears..but Im smiling (meditatively) now... Oh and other thing ...your Donovan..if Im anywhere near the loving empathetic partner to my wife that he clearly is with you..I'll consider myself a very blessed soul. now enough of these teary soul-breaching emotional memories...Tim Minchin...always good for a laugh..as you may have heard me subtly hint hint at occassionally :) ;)

This song always brings a tear to my eye as well Gitana and like you I grew up listening to this. I was raised by my fraternal grandmother and lived with her till I was 11 years old and we played it at her funeral so it always brings back that memory. I also love the movie but after listening to this I usually have to follow it up with something silly to lighten the mood like Mississippi squirrel revival by Ray Stevens.

This was a beautifully honest reaction to a very heartstring tugging song. You can see the honest connection you have to the song , not only here but in every reaction I have watched of yours. I am of the opinion that you are absolutely adorably open with your videos which creates a more powerful connection with your audience.
