GitHub Copilot tutorial with IntelliJ IDEA

Great stuff, I installed the plugin long time ago but never used it. I'm just wondering isn't this taking the fun out of programming? what's your take on this?

I'm a pragmatic software developer: I see this plugin as yet another tool in my arsenal to make me more productive in building better, safer and faster software systems. But like I said at the end of this long video (which you probably missed :-) ) I do NOT recommend this tool to junior developers: they need to learn HOW to program first and they won't learn much about coding if they build systems using this tool. As far as this tool potentially "taking the fun out of programming" I think it's relative and depends on what one considers "fun in programming": if "fun" for you is trying to crack the many simple and complex "coding puzzles" on a typical's day of coding then yes maybe the tool removes some of that fun. However, if "fun" in programming is focusing on designing elegant, extensible, maintainable systems (a human activity) and leaving the "low level" coding tasks to an "AI assistant" then I think this tool can make the "programming activity" even more fun 😊

​@@CraftOfProgramming Haha a lot to unpack here, like you say you everybody has their definition of what is fun but again from what I can see this tool isn't just writing the so called boilerplate code for you, it feels like it could a lot more than that. And I'm not sure I could consider myself as a junior developer as I've been a programmer slightly over 10 years now lol. I will give it a try and see how I will like it

Yeah, give this tool a go. That's the best way to be able to judge it's value (but be warned, it's "addictive" ;-) ). BTW, I wasn't implying in any way that you're a junior developer. Happy coding!

nice demo. integration of the plugin with IntelliJ indeed not very nice, lots of copy/paste like you say, in vscode much better. hope they will enhance this... !

Yes indeed. GitHub copilot is amazing. The best Ai coding assistant I've tried with intellij Idea (and I've tried quite a few of them!!). It's a shame that the plugin authors don't improve on the integration. It would be a game changer!

Hey, thanks for watching. The material that is covered is extensive because this tutorial is for complete beginnes. As such the tutorial includes the installation and setup of the plugin, basic usage of the plugin (including shortcuts and limitations) and the creation of simple Java application from scratch. I think you could watch the video on your commute home/work 😜
