THANK YOU - I've been saying this for years so I'm glad to see some people understand. I'm non-white, and I refuse to entertain yet another blonde hippie with super fine hair criticize me for shaving my legs, using shampoo, or straightening my hair for a job interview. I'm all for broadening beauty standards, but in the end of the day, you CANNOT tell someone else what to do with their body. It's condescending AF. If you really care about making social beauty standards more inclusive, go after the people in power who materially punish people for not looking a certain way - companies, advertisers, hiring managers, etc. Make the world more inclusive and less shame-y.

It is tiring to think about how often people weaponize their own personal preferences, beliefs, values, etc. into a “you’re lesser than me” or “I’m better than you” judgement. It solves nothing and literally serves no purpose.

I graduated with an Anthropology degree but currently work in an office doing unrelated work. A man I worked with told me he didn't believe I had studied Anthropology because I wore makeup and enjoyed dressing very feminine (ie. dresses and skirts). His narrow minded view of me as a person based on his assumption I was dressing that way to conform or attract men but I am a happily married lesbian and when I saw I dress and do my makeup the way I do for myself I am saying that with my whole chest.

This conversation is particularly relevant when it comes to veganism also. Whether or not people try to talk me out of it or become open to switching themselves seems to depend a lot on whether I "look healthy" or not. Especially true for close friends and family members. As such I have found that focusing on skin/hair care and being as physically fit as I have time for has simply made things easier for me on a very practical level. Sometimes it's easier to pick our battles when it comes to non-conformity.

@Laura Caflisch "Sometimes it's easier to pick our battles when it comes to non-conformity." That perfectly sums it up right there. As a queer woman, if I want to be acceptable, being strategic about how I perform my femininity is really helpful in allowing me to move through the world and be seen closer to how I would like to be seen--as someone who is not disordered for her gender or sexuality and who deserves respect. It sucks that we* have to consider respectability politics* in our day to day lives, but we do. *Acknowledgement 1. Some women/people's identities are respected more than others, depending on their racial and other intersectionalities *Acknowledgement 2. Thank you so much for this video! I'm a young woman working in a federal state office for environmental and conservation matters. I try to live sustainably in many aspects, though not going all out in that regard. Personally, I like to dress nicely and put on makeup from time to time, I find joy in fashion etc. But for work, I always feel the need to do less of everything. I very rarely wear makeup to work, even though I'd actually like to some times, and when I do I actually feel a bit ashamed, or like colleagues may not take me as serious, because I'm "vain" or unprofessional. So your video helps me to rethink these thoughts and gives me validation that I can do beneficial things for the environment, while still caring about my looks when I feel like it. Thank you!

Yes! Very true. I’m a psychologist and i have noticed that some people might relate not “caring” for themselves, the self-care is normally sold and directed towards beauty standards, for overall negligence, similar to a broken window theory, which can, sometimes, worsen signs and symptoms of depression. this very strict discourse makes people who are surrounding environmentalism unstimulated to join in, because the cost of the answer is high, is to give up on too much. And lastly, none of this means that you who choose not to support beauty standards should go back to them, continue your work and preferably find nicer ways to encourage others to give those standards up as well.

Yes to all of this! Also, a lot of the creators that are successful in the sustainability space do fit the western beauty standards even if they don't wear a lot of make up etc. (Think the entire social media vegan movement circa 2018.) In some ways being thin and having naturally beautiful features is even more highly valued in our culture than wearing a lot of make up and altering your appearance, which is often seen as "trying too hard" or "being fake". To me that always felt like such an unattainable beauty standard since there was not much you could do unless you were born looking like a model.

umm but it really is unnecessary... I sometimes wear makeup when I'm in the mood but you can't seriously think it's necessary. but of course there are also 'masculine' things there aren't necessary like wearing a tie. ties don't have to exist, but some men still wear them for whatever reason. some might like them, some do it to look more acceptable at their job or at an event like wedding or something. but no one could posdibly say that this piece of material hanging from your neck is necessary just like covering your face with makeup. half of the population proves it by also having faces, eyelashes, eyelids, lips, and they don't wear makeup. just like another half proves that ties aren't necessary.

I completely agree. The backlash of women not conforming to beauty standards is greater, but it’s also more of a refusal than an action. Not styling your hair beyond washing it, no makeup, not shaving, wearing comfortable or functional clothes rather than ones made for fashion are actions of not doing something. Just living in a woman’s natural state is an act of rebellion. For men, not conforming to gender norms is active. Painting nails, skirts, makeup, or just putting more effort into their appearance than what is deemed “normal”. Both are oppressive, people deserve the right to express themselves beyond gender norms or cultural stereotypes, but I wanted to point out the difference

people who are very critical to others for following certain aesthetic ideals, have in my experience ususally not freed themselves from aesthetic standards themselves, they have most of the time just shifted them towards a beauty standard that exists in a different setting; boho/hippie aesthetic also is an aesthetic, where people tend to gravitate towards similar looks, to create a feeling of belonging. Clothes help us to feel at home in a certain role, and whether that is to fit in a certain context, or oppose to something, is a very similar process. I think it is easier to feel professional when you see yourself dressed as the kidn of professional you want to be, similarly, I think it is easier to be a rebel when your appearance actively screams "opposition" ;) I once was on a party of a friend who is very much into metal-music, and one of the guests completely went of on me and another guest for wearing a striped jumper: "Ughh, those basis b*tches all try to be unique, while they all look exactly the same" While he himself was wearing the exact same band shirt and wide black pants as at least 5 other people in that room, oh the irony ;)

You know,I just realised this is partly why I stopped going to Quaker meeting for worship. There is a certain amount of subliminal pressure to conform to particular lifestyle choices. A lot of Quakers are RIGOROUSLY spartan and to be perfectly honest I think they are ruddy miserable. There is almost a "I'm suffering. You arnt, and you should be feeling guilty" attitude that has nothing to do with Quakerism actually. When I look back to the meetings I get a vision of dry crunchy short hair, beige clothing,no makeup,no perfume. A lady once burst into tears because I visited a Quaker meeting house wearing makeup. But Elizabeth Fry once attended meeting for worship wearing purple boots with orange laces. Its almost like self-flaggelation.

I've always had a very liberal stance towards makeup and beauty - I engage with it if I want to. I've attended job interviews (and gotten the job, mind you) without a shred of makeup on my face and my hair in a messy bun, because that is what I felt like that day. ATM I am fighting breast cancer and I set the goal for myself to at least put on makeup every day, as a form of pampering ritual and to make myself look a bit more healthy. I'm not ashamed of the sick me, it's just nice for myself to be able to go to the bathroom without seeing the embodiment of sickness in the mirror each time. It's kind of nice to go to the bathroom, have a look in the mirror and think "Hey, I look great!", just like things used to be back in the day before my diagnosis.

I'm sorry you had to make a video about this. Everything you are saying makes perfect sense. For me personally, ditching makeup altogether has been a long time coming, reactionary move against self-hatred as well as protest against the companies which create these toxic, carcinogenic, PFAS-laced goos. You make your own cosmetics, so you know what goes into them. For me personally, if I made my own, I would probably be rashy and red within an hour, knowing my extreme sensitivities. I will never makeup shame anyone because I remember what that was like being constantly bullied for wearing new make up styles which were sometimes extreme. I stopped wearing high heels when I discovered that they can contribute to nerve damage and other physical injuries. But if your body is healthy and you don't mind running (no pun intended) the risk of wearing a pair of previously loved shoes, it's your choice. As far as shaving is concerned, I stopped when I realized that the first stage of torture that accused "witches" had to endure was being shaved from head to toe in order to find marks on their bodies. I also hope to see body hair more normalized on women the way it is with men. But if someone else feels they want to shave, go right ahead. The words "beauty" and "standards" do not go together. True beauty can never be standardized, because it is too individualized!

Agreed - especially for multiply marginalised people. As an Indigenous, queer, and disabled climate activist I do publicly present very "corporate" because it is way too exhausting to navigate having my perspectives heard and needs met as is, let alone if I don't meet peoples' expectation of what a "competent" / "intelligent" person looks like. It is shitty that I have to do that, and I wish it wasn't the standard - it's time consuming and expensive as hell (especially if you have fabric sensitivities and are trying to buy more conscious / sustainable brands while op-shopping not being very accessible for you). So when people then make assumptions that I'm not trying hard enough on sustainability or make assumptions that I must be more capitalist than I am it's really frustrating. I think we do need to tolerate a level of discomfort to make a more inclusive and just society - it's not comfortable giving up power or luxuries - but I think what is actually a necessity vs a luxury is extremely political and differentiated across gender, race, income, employment status etc etc. Just like we have common but differentiated responsibility across countries where historically responsible and wealthier countries should take more responsibility on climate, those individuals who have the most privilege and resources to bear the discomfort and risks of opting out of societal expectations should be doing more and not judging those who can't. It's situational too - in spaces where I do have more power and influence I can take on more of those risks and challenge expectations to make it easier for the next person.

YES TO ALL OF THIS. Fellow environments, let's work on sharing our amazing breadth of knowledge, heart, and skills to empower people with new ideas for helping humanity and the planet RATHER than nitpicking the ways that other environmentalists are imperfect or have to make difficult ethical decisions about day to day habits. As environmentalists, we are ALWAYS weighing out the pros and cons of these decisions so let's have civil conversations about them rather than assuming another environmentalist just doesn't care enough or hasn't thought about it enough. We don't need to tear down our own. We need to unite as a community and show outsiders that there is room for them in this movement so that the companies at fault know that we (their consumer base) want to see changes come directly from them. My point is, in the words of Anne-Marie Bonneau: "We don't need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need millions of people doing it imperfectly."

My skin is also very sensitive and, like you, I can't wear makeup because it irritates my eyes and causes me to break out. Hair dye makes my scalp maddeningly itchy, and most perfumes give me a headache. I also can't wear synthetic fabrics without breaking out into rashes, welts or blisters. Sometimes I wish I could put on a little makeup, but I've come to accept that it's not really healthy for me. Fortunately, I rarely need to. Even before my skin became so sensitive, I was only wearing makeup for very formal occasions. But now, in a perverse twist of fate, and after an almost decade long break from formal occasions, I'll be going to two weddings this year, one of which I'll be the mother of the bride. I'm not sure what I'm going to do. Should I risk wearing makeup and deal with the fallout for my skin afterwards, or go barefaced and hope the other guests aren't too judgy?

Do the people who make that criticism also apply it to men who shave or get their hair cut, who wear deodorant and moisturiser? No, it’s a criticism applied to women, as ever. It’s a distraction. So much judgement in the world today!

Like it or not men are criticized just as much a women. Maybe not the exact same thing. Our confidence, physical fitness, how outgoing we are, how funny we are, how we dress, how we keep ourselves (hair, beard and skin), even if we have money or not, being to nice. It's to the point that some people believe that its the mans responsibility to make the woman feel good about herself. And blame us when they don't. She touches on this a little in the video. All people are criticized. If you have a way to get it to stop I am all about it.

@@suzubee9602 "Do the people who make that criticism also apply it to men who shave or get there hair cut, who wear deodorant and moisturizer?" I'm not discrediting her for what she said or asked. Im answering what she was asking according to the criticism that I have personally received. I am disagreeing with her saying "No, it's a criticism applied to women, as ever." I believe it is also applied to men as well. Just my opinion. I didn't mean it to seem rude.

In certain surroundings the level of a man's particular hygiene may make them a target for ridicule. It depends on the group or cultural standard for men. I have witnessed it in person. I believe the judgements people make are learned behavior which can be altered with time, education and an evolving mind.

The people that say that things "aren't necessary for survival" don't remember that happiness is also good for you. Wheezy Waiter often says this on his channel, and along with the motto "the perfect is the enemy of the good" consistently make a good point in a number of different situations

I didn't shave for 5/6 years, but then my therapist told me they never felt good about it, so I waited and then I once tried shaving again because I wanted to think about it before doing it. At the end of the day hair grows back, I thought. I ended my first and only relationship so far, I was with a toxic person and it left me with so many of my insecurities running amock, after I had managed to somehow calm them down before the relationship started. On top of that I felt ashamed because I gave in to things that were different from my core values, trying to compromise because I know that is what goes on in a *healthy* relationship, but it turns out it wasn't one. It's been 10 months and I am slowly recovering. I keep shaving every now and then, but I want to keep my moral integrity as much as my mental health allows it and I cut my hair short again. The country I live in is quite close-minded, so my legs were a point of attention even in more "aware" spaces. I wish people would learn that it isn't unhygienic and that it is a preference, just like hair length, I wish we were detached from the idea of "hairless=sexy" and I do my best to educate those I know about this, whenever the topic is brought up. I feel like a hypocrite, but I know I'm not. Thank you for this very important think piece.

I barley wear make up, bc I simply don't see as something very useful for me. And for years I shave my legs only in the warm half of the year and from the ankles to the kneels. And btw, this discussion about women' body hair is the stupidest thing in the net. I lastly heard the post/demand that women should shave the forearms. Excuse me, what? Sometimes males (bc they are mainly males) having some issues that females have hair somewhere else than head makes me cringe as hell.

i'd like to add that when i "give in" to modern/conventional beauty standards i do it partially with the intention to look as normal as possible to show people that you dont have to forego modern creature comforts in order to live a more sustainable life. (i like to think that im leading my example here) because many people still have that hemp loving hippie stereotype in mind when they find out im an environmentalist and i want to show people that theres more to environmentalism than wearing beige linen and not washing your hair

I feel like this is the most healthy way to see those beauty standarts. I‘m shaving my legs bc i don‘t want people to say something stupid to me. But do i force myself to do it? No. I have hairy legs 1/3 of the time and than i decide „now its time to shave“ and i feel like it‘s the best way bc i don‘t force anything

A lot of places a phone is needed either due to it being the genuinely more affordable option, or due to not having local public tech available. Too many companies now require internet and email just to apply for a job. And for many people having a cell is easier or more affordable than having a laptop and paying for Internet and paying separate for a land line. Especially in urban areas where cell coverage is good enough to provide computing, email, internet, and phone all through one device. I just wish these devices were designed to last and not kneecapped with garbage software and updates that manufacture obsolescence.

So we all in the bubble accepted that makeup is a form of oppression for women. But for drag queens or makeupartists its a form of expression. I believe makeup is a form of destinction to be included or excluded from a specific group. Its a tool among others. We really should look on real oppression. Also how is everything that woman do to enhance their attractiveness related to them not being intelligent, but dumb and oppressed? Real respect for a woman would be that she can present female and still be respected.

Pro tip to anyone feeling lonely and hopeless or intimidated by the online sustainability community: if you have the opportunity to do that safely where you live, do in person activism with other people. The climate justice movement is pretty diverse and welcoming with a lot of very different people who participate. most people don't care if you look "alternative" or "pretty" enough as long as you care for the movement, at least that's my experience from germany.

Well, we find some prehistoric garnements ornated with thousands of seashells and pierced stones. These garnements probably require a lot (a lot) of time to be completed, by these hunters-gathrerers, just to be beautiful. So I think it's in our DNA to want to look good according to the standards of our tribe😊

let’s stay real, actually the models/women in eco fashion are just as shaved and skinny how the mainstream beauty standards show the way. also the super sexualizing of women in the eco or hippie style is crazy depending where you look. that said of course everyone should decide when to participate in the different beauty stadards. agreed, no shame for that, but the whole this is “my” taste and not reflecting on how much we got manipulated into it since we are little girls/boys.. is super annoying to me. there the “mindless sheep” for me comes in. we can be aware and still chose to go with the beauty standards when we feel good with it or it is easier for our everyday life(not getting harassed or look at badly).

people often forget that sustainable lifestyle is actually a privilege and sometimes a luxury. The socio-economic system itself is against sustainability, and we need to make extra steps and extra time to change things (which is again a luxury). Policing will not make any good for anyone.

To be honest, I like makeup but don't wear it often because I'm lazy. Between a 15min lie-in and doing my makeup, I'm choosing my lie-in. So I fit in quite well being bare-faced. But I also experienced quite a positive environment in the UK. Eyeliner is pretty common and unremarked upon, but I will say I have never seen a full face of makeup. It's also more acceptable for the spokespeople to make an effort, I was praised for wearing makeup to do some interviews because we wanted to shift the public view of activists from 'unwashed hippies' to "we're just like you". I have some opinions about that, I certainly didn't wear makeup for that reason, I sometimes did and didn't on my whim. I've found the one thing we're getting right here is body positivity (but failing badly on other forms of inclusivity). Hair legs and pits were commonplace, but there wasn't much judgement either way. Seriously though, I remember getting ready for my 5th 4am action in a row and being impressed that people were still applying makeup.

This is deep and thank you for talking about this . A lot of people think that if you are eco you are or have to be a drab sloppy person but you can't be you can be put together looking person and be eco friendly even if you know beauty standards are stupid but you still participate because if you don't your ability to make money would be at risk.( I look like a tired corpse when not makeup-ed with permanent dark circles under my eyes ) . I used to cut my thick wavy hair pixie short because it was more convenient for me and took less time to do . however people are not as open to me .. but when my hair is a bit longer people think I'm more friendly - wavy bob mid neck and they are more open to me. Its aggravating but I want people to trust me so I can make more money but I have to spend more on hair care items and use more water to take care of my hair. SO I suck up to the beauty standards and I put on makeup and grow my hair out a bit so people will trust me.

but also, can we stop shaming people for wanting to wear makeup? it's such a superficial think to presume to *know* someone is BAD at environmentalism because they're wearing mascara? Jeez they might be the most proactive zero waster ever, but of course people will decide they're bad just by looking at their face.

there are some good points in this video but the overarching message is wildly out of touch with reality. "ohhh cant we just let women be feminine cant we just let people conform to societal norms if they want?? people oppressing me by briefly mentioning that i have the option to not wear makeup. its soooo much easier to not get occasional comments about my thin blonde barely visible leg hair. and its not like the conventionally attractive cis white straight abled feminine women are blatantly dominating the scene, especially on youtube. other people Exist so that means its diverse. the dirty hippie with long pit hair isnt a stereotype often touted around to belittle serious issues, is a beauty standard that overrides the general societal norm. im sooooo counter-cultural for going against this "beauty standard" and conforming to the other beauty standard that actually exists in real life. people are sooooo mean to me because of this"

Things like that have such a negative effect on an environmental movement overall. If you push extremes onto ppl they’ll push back or pull away from making environmentally friendly choices. So many ppl feel that if they don’t tick all the boxes then there’s no point in making a small change. But if everyone made even one small change then it could have a huge positive impact. So can we just have friendly conversations and acknowledge that not everyone has the ability to make huge lifestyle changes overnight
