Weaving new patterns: Textile production and social implications in Cyprus between the end of the Chalcolithic and the transition to the Late Bronze Age
This talk aims to draw a comprehensive picture of textile production in Cyprus, between the Late Chalcolithic (c. 2700-2500/2400 BCE) and the beginning of the Late Bronze Age (c. 1700-1450 BCE). The goal is to tackle, in the long term, technological and socio-economic aspects related to this manufacture and discuss their implications in the construction of Cypriot prehistoric society.
Two interrelated approaches-techno-functional and contextual-are used to investigate the textile evidence that can be identified in the Cypriot record (e.g., tools, structures, fabric remains). The first approach enables us to comprehend the functional and technical data that can be gleaned from a single archaeological indicator. The second approach focuses on the productive processes influencing or existing inside any specific socio-economic system. The different aspects of textile production are outlined to establish a coherent framework in which the micro-histories of local communities and the macro-history of the island are read through the lens of textiles.
